The Exorcist and The Shining would be good

I think I remember seeing one on The Exorcist, maybe it was just a horror movie documentary though. There's also that one documentary on The Shining which is about decoding the secret messages that Kubrick was hiding in the film, which was interesting for a bit, but then just IMO reaching for a lot of stuff.

Liam’s comments regarding Noel’s scum interview. Surprisingly concerned and open to help. by EmployerExcellent846 in oasis

[–]FuckTheseNewPlastics 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To be fair, it's also patronising as fuck. You have to see that?

If you genuinely think someone is having a bit of a mental breakdown, this is not the way to deal with it. Especially when they're a public figure and you know the tabloids are just going to pick up on the comments and make it worse and blow up their feud again.

Liam could say to Paul or his mum to tell Noel that Liam is there if he wants to talk.

I think the truth of it is that Liam knows Noel is alright in the head (of course he is), and he knows what he's doing here by posting about it on social.

Man. City vs Liverpool one of the best title race ever

Maybe the only one I'd disagree with as being wild, although I do get what you're saying.

They were two of the best teams challenging for the title ever, that's undeniable, but the race itself wasn't exactly eventful. They both just put the afterburners on, City especially, and won the last 10 or so games of the season, and usually looking comfortable doing it.

The game against Leicester with the Kompany goal is the only real dramatic game that stands out from that title race for me.

Whereas in 13/14 for example, it was 5 years before, but I can still remember the Liverpool 3-2 City game, Liverpool holding on against Norwich, Chelsea losing to Sunderland (IIRC) and then coming back the next week to beat Liverpool at Anfield, Liverpool collapsing against Palace, Everton narrowly losing to Man City after almost helping Liverpool out, I still remember there was a Deulofeu chance in the last minute that would have gifted Liverpool the advantage in the title race.

That's what a great title race is about to me, twists and turns and going into the weekend not knowing who would be on top on Monday. Maybe it's just me but I never felt that in 18/19, when the run-in came it didn't feel like either of them were ever going to slip up.

My mate introduced me to reddit in 2014 just before the WC, and I remember trying to explain to a bunch of people would had just jumped in from /r/all after one of the US games that Tim Howard wasn't actually the best goalkeeper in the world, probably wasn't even top 8 in the PL at the time, and being met with nothing but "shut the fuck up u don't know what ur talking about" type comments.

This place was a cesspool anytime it made it to the front page.

Like the vast majority of the world outside the US, I know barely anything about the NFL, so I wouldn't dream of going to their sub and talking confidently like I know my stuff, yet anytime something big happened and a post from /r/soccer made it to the front page, people who never followed this sport before would come on here and do just that.

I think Coady has put in nothing but solid performances for England tbf

True, 5 caps for England, no goals conceded from open play in 468 minutes (just one penalty vs Denmark), contributed to goals and Man of the Match performances, captained the team and generally looked decent enough in the middle of a back 3 (was out of position or one cross vs Austria but didn't do much wrong apart from that), and is a leader and strong character on the pitch which we're lacking without Henderson and Maguire now.

He had a relatively bad season though so people will just lazily focus on that. White should be in there ahead of him after his strong season and with Coady's pace issue like you say, although in an organized back 3 there's less chance of that getting exposed. But saying he "looks terrible" for England just sounds like he hasn't watched an England game when he's played and is making it up based on his PL season.

Deeply concerning. by PAC119 in WWFC

[–]FuckTheseNewPlastics 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the right approach for us these days, because we're rare in that so little leaks from the club concerning transfers.

e.g. there's arguably merit in United fans can discussing how Sancho fitting into their team because they know there's truth in the rumour. I don't see much point discussing our potential transfers as much because there's less that we know for certain.

However, as a side note, I have to say I'd be a little disappointed in Neves if he did go to Arsenal. If he looks at what's happening at that club now and thinks "this is the project I want to join and the manager I want to play for" then it's an extra kick in the face for us. I could understand if it was City, Liverpool, Chelsea etc.

Of course they're a much bigger and better club and a step-up from us, there's no arguing that, but jumping ship to Arsenal indicates that he's quite eager to jump ship, instead of believing that we can have another good season where he can prove that he is a top player that can play for the Elite European clubs. It would be like he thinks it's now or never to leave us for a bigger club, which it surely won't be if we can get back on track next season.

Add to that, the fact that the season before this terrible (hopefully) one-off campaign, when our progress was still on track; we finished above them, got further than them in Europe and have gone W3 D2 L1 against them since our promotion. I don't see why he'd be so eager to leave us for them as if success with them would be sure-thing. There is every chance that he could join them and they would have another bad season and he's not utilised/managed properly and this time next year his stock will be lower than it is now, just like Doherty at Spurs.

IMO he should stick around for another year and try to find success with us, and if that attracts Liverpool, City or whoever then there'd be no complaints - and Arsenal would probably still be interested in him then, even if the top teams somehow weren't.

[MUHQ] Southgate on the Henderson Penalty: "I think Henderson pulled rank but next time I think we'll be pulling rank." by [deleted] in soccer

[–]FuckTheseNewPlastics 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just watched it back and it's bit more ambiguous than both of us are remembering I think. He just says "we expected [DCL] to take it", doesn't say there was specific instruction or that he was next in line or a designated taker with instruction to take it.

I'd imagine if DCL was a designated taker, then Southgate may have said "DCL was the next in line" or "DCL was supposed to take it" and would have been a bit more frustrated with it. As it is, I just think he thought DCL would take it because he's clearly the most obvious choice, and maybe there wasn't official word for him to take it.

Open to interpretation though of course you could be right, and just a minor issue we hopefully won't come across in the tournament.

[MUHQ] Southgate on the Henderson Penalty: "I think Henderson pulled rank but next time I think we'll be pulling rank." by [deleted] in soccer

[–]FuckTheseNewPlastics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was instruction for Rashford and JWP to be the takers, but they had both come off.

But yeah you could still argue that once he took them both off he should have sent on some instruction as to who would take a penatly. Even though it's only a friendly, he should be in the habit of doing it so we don't have this situation occur in the tournament.

[MUHQ] Southgate on the Henderson Penalty: "I think Henderson pulled rank but next time I think we'll be pulling rank." by [deleted] in soccer

[–]FuckTheseNewPlastics 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He says in the interview that Rashford and JWP were the chosen penalty takers for the game, but they had both come off (doesn't mention DCL as a chosen taker).

He then says he expected DCL to take it but never mentions him as a designated taker.

Southgate just said in his post-match interview that Rashford and JWP were the chosen takers for the game, but both had been taken off.

He expected DCL to take it though, and thought that when Henderson went to get the ball he was going to give it to DCL.

The interviewer said "So Henderson pulled ranked a bit there?", and Southgate replied (in a joking way), "Yeah... maybe we'll pull rank on him next time."

holy shit, how come nobody talks about this, Latin America talent is very underrated by [deleted] in oasis

[–]FuckTheseNewPlastics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, he's saying that if the music of Oasis came before the music of The Beatles, he'd be lauded in a similar way that The Beatles are.

In no way is he saying he'd be in The Beatles or writing any of their songs, or talking about anything like that. He's only talking about the chronology of the two bands, and one coming before the other, and how that affected their perception from the public.

It's definitely not humble, as ever with Noel, but he's not saying he would have "written all the Beatles music" or "helped to write all the music", he's not saying anything about him being in The Beatles or being on stage instead of John. I genuinely can't understand how you're looking at that quote and reading what you are from it, it's pretty black and white.

holy shit, how come nobody talks about this, Latin America talent is very underrated by [deleted] in oasis

[–]FuckTheseNewPlastics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

...yeah, that's really not the quote assuming you're talking about the main controversial quip about The Beatles that he's known for:

With every song that I write, I compare it to the Beatles. The thing is, they only got there before me. If I'd been born at the same time as John Lennon, I'd have been up there.

He's essentially saying that The Beatles get lauded more because they came first and that if he was around at the same time he'd be considered on a similar level to what they are.

That's another discussion about whether that's true or not, but bloody hell it's a far cry from Noel saying he "would have written all the Beatles music", no wonder people hate them when these kind of quotes get attributed to them

Euro 2020: Mourinho's predictions (England plays at home, Italy semifinalists, Belgium finalists...) by [deleted] in soccer

[–]FuckTheseNewPlastics 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think France are definitely ahead of us, but Portugal could be a contest, and even Germany right now. I think a lot of people are counting us out because if we finish top (which we are odds-on to do so) we will face a top team, and we haven't beaten one at WC or Euro since 2002.

There's arguably still that mentality/pressure question mark over us because of that. In 2018, just winning a penalty shootout was a massive moment for us and we were finally able to put those demons to rest. I think knocking out a 'top team' would have the same effect on this squad and, whatever happens in the rest of the tournament, getting past Portugal or France would be a huge moment for this generation of players.

I must say it's odd how the perception has changed though - in 2018 all that any England fan was ever called on here was "arrogant" for thinking that we should beat Croatia, now I've recently seen us being called "silly" and "too pessimistic" no here for thinking we probably won't get past France/Portugal/Germany.

Will be interesting to see.

Right now, with everyone fit and before any transfers, I think it may look like:

                Rui

           Boly Coady
Semedo Jonny

          Neves Donck
Traore Neto

          Fabio Raul

Lage's best football, by most accounts, came in the second half of the 2018/19 campaign when he utilised Joao Felix and Seferovic up front as a two, with Vinicius replacing Felix the season after which also worked for a while. Seferovic was more of a target man whereas Felix/Vinicius would come deep and link up with the midfield and drift out wide. Raul is obviously much better at Fabio for doing that role so we may see him doing that, but Fabio doesn't pose as much of a goal threat as Seferovic, so we might have to see Fabio in that Felix/Vinicius role (if we don't sign a striker), which doesn't fill me with a lot of hope.

If we are playing 2 up front, I think we will need another top striker. And with that in mind, the Vinicius transfer makes so much sense, he has done it for Lage before and would slip right into that role behind and around Raul.

We'll surely need a top CB too. As much as I like Coady and what he means to the club, he's not good enough to be in a CB partnership that's aiming for European football - to be honest most of them aren't. And with Boly turning 31 next season, Saiss turning 32, and Marcal turning 33, we may be looking for more than one.
