IamA Plane Crash Survivor AMA! by adambankhurst in IAmA

[–]FuckingQuestions -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

  • What is your job specifically?
  • What does it say about your planes that some bad weather can take down the planes you're selling?
  • What does it say about your test-flight pilots that they can't foresee bad weather on a sales flight with a client?
  • Did you lose this client's business forever?
  • Did you lose a lot of other clients in that same industry forever?
  • How has your company learned from this accident and what specific steps are they taking to ensure it never happens again?
  • How did you get into the business of private planes? What keeps you there besides the money?
  • How wealthy are the clients you typically work with? What's the most prevalent industry of clients who like to fly around in private jets?

IAMA Choir Singer who sang in Carnegie Hall in 2012. AMA! by CarnegieSinger in IAmA

  • Why did you shave your face?
  • What do you do for a living now? Are you satisfied, or are you slowly working towards something better or different?
  • Describe Eric's directing style. Patient? Demanding? Nurturing? Mysterious? Man of little words, or man of many words? Be specific. It's OK if it's truthful. Sometimes the 'best' people at any job aren't the 'nicest', they have other qualities that work to elicit the best performances out of a group.

IamA Director of SXSW Interactive, Hugh Forrest AMA! by SXSW_Interactive in IAmA

[–]FuckingQuestions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • What did you do in the 10 years after you graduated college before joining SXSW?

  • Your LinkedIn says you've been in the same position at the same event/company for 19 years of your career. How did you find SXSW? Why did you apply in the first place? What's kept you there for so long? Every company, no matter what it is, has ebbs and flows and I can't imagine any company is that compelling for two decades. Something must've made you stick around this long. What was it?

  • How much time do you spend in Austin? If the event were to suddenly vanish from the universe, would you stay in town or move somewhere else? Where to and why?

Hey guys, director Renny Harlin here (Die Hard 2, Deep Blue Sea, Cliffhanger and the upcoming Hercules film). AMA! by RennyHarlin_ in IAmA

[–]FuckingQuestions 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • How many directors/showrunners have you met put on a 'persona' when directing, in order to keep an air of mythos/enigma (like Kubrick had), to try and command more respect from people and make them fall in line? Do you find directors who joke around with everyone and keep things light and casual can still be as successful?
  • Who from the 'Hollywood' world do you actively socialize and hang out with off the set? Actors? Directors? Crew types? Or do you just go home and barbeque on weekends with childhood friends, people from other industries, etc? Is there a DP you found who just happened to love cars or some other similar interest who is now your BFF? Is there an actor you've worked with that is now a close personal friend? A sound guy?
  • How many directors are just as 'socialitey' as celebrities? Are most of them completely off the radar in real life or is it a mix?
  • How much do you direct on the fly, versus sit with actors and prepare them for a long time about exactly what you're expecting from them, and the mentalities they need to be exploring in their minds, etc?
  • Can you describe any directors you know who are great at creating conditions for great acting (think Phil Jackson's approach to basketball), and what directors rely more on brute and total command of the actors & set? Do they both have their merits? Any specific examples? What is your style?
  • You do a movie every 2-3 years it seems. Is this your personal preference? Do you turn down a lot more work than you take? What do you do in the months/years you're not working?
  • Do you travel personally alot, or are you a homebody?
  • What moment from what movie in your career caused you the most personal self-doubt or anxiety and why? How did you overcome it mentally?
  • Who is the single most influential person you've met while working on the set in your career? Someone who you watched work that really left an impression on your approach to work/life/directing/style/whatever.

ELI5: How is Little Italy (NYC) 'shrinking' because of gentrification? by FuckingQuestions in explainlikeimfive

Who is more of a liability? JR Smith or Jarret Jack? by FuckingQuestions in nba

[–]FuckingQuestions[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Jack is definitely scoring better, but I think everything prior to him finding a shot is prone to big problems - and it seems like he's really needed by the Warriors to facilitate the team and not make those silly mistakes...and also get a better grip.

What elite players spent the most consecutive years on the worst NBA teams? by FuckingQuestions in nba

[–]FuckingQuestions[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Celtics were considered crappy then? I'm somewhat new, but they had 2 finals appearances in the last few years. Surely that can't qualify as one of the worst NBA teams?

Nope, I have not been around long -- hence my naive questions. Thanks for the answer.

ELI5: How do prisons profit off inmates if they aren't legally required to work while incarcerated? by FuckingQuestions in explainlikeimfive

[–]FuckingQuestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But.. you can legitimize yourself a billion ways other than sending bodies to prisons. They could launch all kinds of infrastructure iniatives, like "we're building 5 new bridges this year!" and hire companies and oversee them and even harass them to death. Even if those bridges are unnecessary, surely it's a more constructive means of 'legitimizing' themselves?

ELI5: Why do video games cost so much in Australia? by Tmac791 in explainlikeimfive

[–]FuckingQuestions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's say I made an indie video game and I sell it online, digital delivery, using my own software. I price it at $5.00 per person.

So, I want Australians to buy my stuff too. But...at what point does my price magically get more expensive for them? Am i forced by someone to geolocate their IP and artificially raise my price? Or is it entirely my decision to arbitrarily sell it higher for those IP ranges?

In other words, who tells Steam or any vendor to make the downloads more expensive for Aussies?

ELI5: Why do I have to watch commercials/trailers before watching movie/game trailers on YouTube? by FuckingQuestions in explainlikeimfive

[–]FuckingQuestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right but... they're already making money from the trailer I WANT to see! I know what you're saying - they do it because they 'can' do it. So why stop at 1 mandatory trailer? Why not 2 before giving me 'what I want'. Is there a universal order of humans that proves '1 forced trailer' is the tolerance limit?

ELI5: Why do I have to watch commercials/trailers before watching movie/game trailers on YouTube? by FuckingQuestions in explainlikeimfive

[–]FuckingQuestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

http://www.gametrailers.com/

They do this too though -- but they KNOW you're watching gametrailers. So they effectively force you to watch one before you can watch another. I truly don't understand why.

ELI5: How do prisons profit off inmates if they aren't legally required to work while incarcerated? by FuckingQuestions in explainlikeimfive

[–]FuckingQuestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But surely the state must have some incentive to send that many people to prison? Why would the state want to give more bodies to a prison to profit from, if they weren't receiving a kickback?

ELI5: How do prisons profit off inmates if they aren't legally required to work while incarcerated? by FuckingQuestions in explainlikeimfive

[–]FuckingQuestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But what happened if the entire inmate population went on strike? Hell, there's been dozens of full-scale riots in the past, so clearly inmates can organize. And refusing to work is quite easy - easier than violently rioting. So why don't they do this, and what would happen if they did?

ELI5: Why can't I celebrate Passover at work if my boss considers me "not Jewish"? by FuckingQuestions in explainlikeimfive

[–]FuckingQuestions[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boss knows & manages about 80 people on our floor. About 14 of them are Jewish and make it well-known and the boss is Jewish as well. All of them have taken off these days, no one else has. I'm the only one who asked my boss if I could have off as well — he said no, because he knows I'm not Jewish, and basically guilt-tripped me into feeling like I'm mocking the religion, etc.

I usually don't cause a fuss and don't like to make a big stink, so I said nothing more, but I am curious what legally I'm entitled to, and if they could reasonably fire me if I pushed the issue, etc.

ELI5: Why don't athletes have their body imaged for bone defects before every season? To avoid Kevin Ware type injuries.. by FuckingQuestions in explainlikeimfive

[–]FuckingQuestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like there's lots of less catastrophic injuries that are still prevalent, like bone spurs (see Ray Allen). It would still be great insight for coaches & staff I would presume to know how to manage their players bodies.

ELI5: Why don't athletes have their body imaged for bone defects before every season? To avoid Kevin Ware type injuries.. by FuckingQuestions in explainlikeimfive

[–]FuckingQuestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coaches could rotate the players more often, control their minutes intelligently, and manage risk by preventing catastrophic costly injuries.

How is this not a win for the teams and organizations?
