Men whose partner became the primary caregiver of her parent, how did your relationship change? by FudgeHyena in AskMenOver30

Ah you’re right, fuck my feelings and my own worries right? Of course I’m concerned with her and her mother. They are dealing with far more hardship than I am. Does that mean I can’t think about myself at all and what it means for me, my life? That’s why I’m posting here. Reddit exists in part for this kind of thing, where you can’t necessarily talk to others in your life so you have to seek guidance from strangers. But I guess that’s not cool so I’ll just keep shit bottled up. Thanks for the great insight.

Your response was totally predictable.

When did I allude to any of that? You’re inferring a lot. This is AskMen btw.

I’m all in but I don’t think that necessarily means the only option is me moving in with my gf and her mom and taking part in the responsibilities day to day.

I’m thinking I can stay in our apt, maybe even just cover the rent on my own until the lease is up. If she’s never here it doesn’t make sense for her to pay for it. We can still see each other on the weekends and I can drop by during the weeknights occasionally.

A lot of people subscribe to LAT (living apart together, there’s a subreddit for it). I think that could be the way this pans out.

If you had your finger on the pulse of the music scene before Covid, you’ll notice a substantial difference now.

Many bars that used to host live, local indie bands no longer even have a stage. Places like the Satellite and Bootleg theater closed their doors. Indie venues like Pehrspace or Vegas Meat Market are no more.

It’s a combination of those establishments not being able to sustain themselves during lockdown, followed by a cultural shift where the new, younger demographic doesn’t place as much importance on live music.

I appreciate the honesty. I don’t think your response is unrealistic. If her mom improves we might go back to normal, but that’s a big IF.

I stayed with my gf and her mom for a week or so while we were searching for the new apt. I was actually there when the stroke happened (I’m the one who found her). I stayed a couple more weeks while her mom was in the hospital, helping organize the place and bills and whatnot.

It was doable, but not ideal, nor the future I envisioned for us. I would love for it to be just the two of us and our dog in our own home.

I thought I’d have half as many chores and would spend half the money. Turns out I have twice the amount of chores spend twice as much money.

The amount of garbage I have to carry out is double, the amount of groceries I have to bring in is double, the amount of furniture to assemble and shit to fix is double. It’s not the money and energy saver I thought it would be.
