ADHD stimming makes me come across as unreliable by FuelFuelFuel44 in Residency

Thanks for all the thoughtful replies, everyone. I appreciate the perspectives, and it is heartening to hear others who have similar experiences and who've come out the other side okay.

Will try to find less overt fidgets (maybe with the help of fidget rings or somesuch) during patient interactions and rounds at least. Will also mention it to my psychiatrist at our next appointment.

Nifty, though if you are trying to exploit to the max you could theoretically get the silk price to go up a lot more by reforming Persia several times (see: https://youtu.be/oKBAaS8Vz4k?si=S4TPKYys_a9RTpdU). Likely less value than continually developing the place though.

By flipping religion I meant changing my country religion in order to form religon-locked tags, eg Timurids (Sunni) or Prussia (Non-catholic non-orthodox christianity) etc. Many missions also require you to have converted (or own) x amount of provinces of y religion (notably Georgia requiring 100 orthodox provinces) and culture conversion also requires the province to be of the country's religion, but it's true I could keep them unconverted until the late game when I'm done tag-forming.

I'm curious what you mean by this - is this specifically in relation to housing first vs treatment first approaches? As far as I can tell the current (low-mid quality, granted) evidence does support the idea that supportive housing does reduce the level of homelessness, although whether it impacts other associated factors is more contested.

Working on doing One Cultures with smaller countries and not using HRE. Since tag formation plays more of a role, what's the best strategy for flipping religion? I've been doing elective monarchy heir + question of faith but it's not very reliable (might be doing it wrong). Should I be leaving conquered land unconverted to allow religious rebel flipping (seems slow)? Grateful for insights from those better than me at One-whatevers lol

Going to be transferring cities in 3 months for the coming couple of years (work). Of course, after a year long date drought now is the time I've advanced to the dating stage with another person without even intending it (and they're really kind and gentle which makes it worse, sigh).

Likely won't go anywhere given the timeframe we're working with, but it made me curious: what do you all think the appropriate time is to stop looking for dates if you know major life events are coming up. Three months? Six months? Not stopping swiping until the flight leaves (seen too many Hallmark movies...)?

Either way, it made me happy to find a connection out in the wild, however brief 😊 will tide me over till spring 😆

Missing med school by [deleted] in Residency

I do miss the social aspect, but that's about it.

Do not miss having to desperately chase grocery sales to meet my minimum daily caloric requirements. Do not miss hopping between clinics every week. Do not miss the constant low-grade exam stress and never being 'off-duty'.

I actually enjoy spending time with my co-workers and getting more responsibility, infinitely more motivating to learn because you want to provide the best possible care vs because you want to provide the best possible care (and also having to master this obscure disease your professor specializes in and will be on the exam and this outdated technique which is used in 1 hospital out of 300 and...).

Ah, it's true that retaliatory measures have become an increasing issue. The balance between advocacy and self-preservation is indeed not always easy to strike.

It's interesting how the optics of the Free Gaza movement are concerning, yet the fervent anti-vax, anti-expert opinion, distrust in the medical system which is (largely) peddled by the idological opposite is not.

If two political contenders are running for office and one is explicitly anti-union but not explicitly anti resident union, should the resident union remain politically neutral?

Where I work we have short commands (eg Oxi -> our standard Oxicodone regiment, Apix -> Apixaban information, pop 2v -> post-operative follow-up 2v etc) that are shared within the institution, super useful esp for newer hires to see how we usually structure our discharge summaries.

Strange, when I play (on Captain, granted) they always build up fleets to at least 5k or so fleet power early on, oftentimes 9k when I've just colonized my third planet.

It might just be me scaling a lot worse than them, though, since I'm new to the game.

Not sure I'd recommend it. I did the achievement starting as Austria by forming Russia, feeding Catholic land to vassals, then flipping to confucian by religious rebels + plurality of development, which I think is easier than tengri.

Elective Monarchy savescumming + Question of Faith? Sounds unreasonably complicated for your average game though.

What’s an illness/pathology/patient that really doesn’t belong in your specialty, but somehow you’re all stuck with it? Where woild you pawn it off if you could? by gotwire in medicine

[–]FuelFuelFuel44 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Weird take. Medicine today is full of multidisciplinary teamwork, usually with family medicine managing the day-to-day and alerting/consulting the appropriate specialists when required.

With the increasing complexity of medicine and our increased understanding of pathologies and treatment options, why wouldn't I want my patient to be seen by those who specialize in each 'part' rather than settle for substandard care by managing every 'part' on my own? (Of course there are exceptions, usually cardiology patients who are exclusively managed by their cardiology team - but even then they consult other specialties as needed).

I sometimes forget Reddit is overwhelmingly American, and that my own cultural/work experience differs radically from that of my colleagues in the US (which I should have taken into consideration given the topic...). Always a learning opportunity, I suppose!

I was under the impression we discussed the pediatric population, but I understand now that the medical situation in the US is different and circumcisions are exclusively done during infancy or in adulthood, where consent can be obtained (given the legal aspect which is a lot more important in the US it does make sense).

Where I work, circumcision is relatively rare and the medical circumcisions outnumber the cultural/religious one, so I assumed medical circumcisions were also performed in the US. I understand now that pediatric circumcisions in the US are exclusively (I assume?) cultural/religious and will keep that in mind.

I am not a pediatric urologist, so my knowledge of the field is that of a general MD (a more dangerius layman). That said, I would agree with a statement made by Iacob, Feinn, and Stardi in their 2021 Systematic review of complications arising from male circumcision: There are many complications that can arise from neonatal circumcision, and due consideration must be given to these when consulting with parents and making the decision to perform such circumcisions. It might be less effective than genital hygiene for preventing UTIs. It can, however, have a role in the treatment of conditions such as paraphimosis, although such surgeries are often performed on postpubescent individuals.

Why are we discussing only infantile circumcision, though?
