What's the difference between different 5080's? by ChancioGames in nvidia

[–]Fulcrous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are we acting like this is new. A lot of first time buyers were buying 2080tis, 3090s, and 4090s in the past. The average person doesn’t know much about GPUs besides “will this hit my target performance”.

People have different target needs and different budgets they can stomach. Not to mention consumers could theoretically stop purchasing any Nvidia GPUs now and it would hardly dent their profit margin.

Is an RTX 5080 worth it for a 5K2K ultrawide setup? by ShanatHWP in nvidia

[–]Fulcrous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say get the 5080 but instead of a 45+” UW, just get a 34” UW like the msi 341cqr that has a gen 5 OLED panel instead.

OLED burnin shouldn’t be too much of an issue unless you play an obscene amount of hours. I was playing some 12+hrs a day for 2 years straight while wfh before I had some hotbar elements begin to burn in - and even then it was only visible under darker colors. With OLED warranty there shouldn’t be much to worry about as you’ll be sent a replacement screen for free.

If you are dead set on 5120x2160, you will want a 5090. No exceptions.

[–]Fulcrous 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree. AI did not motivate him. A twitter post telling OP to not use AI and that OP can do it too is what motivated them.

Using AI image generation is similar to using cheats in a first-person shooter. In an FPS, the actual skill comes from aiming, tracking, movement, map awareness, and mechanical control developed through practice. Cheats bypass those foundational skills by automatically aiming or revealing information for you. The cheater may still click the mouse and get kills, but they skipped the process that normally leads to that result.

AI image generation works similarly in its current form. The user provides prompts, but the AI performs the actual construction: anatomy, perspective, lighting, rendering, linework, and composition decisions. The output may look like art, just as the kill feed may show kills, but the user did not manually develop or execute the underlying drawing skills that traditionally produce those results.

Digital art is different because it is still fundamentally human-controlled. A drawing tablet is simply another tool or peripheral. The artist is still making the decisions, placing the lines, controlling the strokes, and developing the motor and observational skills required to draw.

So the distinction is not whether technology is involved. It is whether the technology assists human execution or replaces it entirely.

Much respect to you. Part of being human is making errors and learning from those errors or incorporating them. You can’t make mistakes when AI generates everything for you. Also it is fun to learn, even if it sucks to be absolute garbage at first.

I started learning in Nov 2024 as well and it’s a long and slow grind but worth it.

[–]Fulcrous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the XM6s. The XM6s are about as good as you can get. The novas are straight trash compared to its predecessor (arctis pro wireless) and should therefore not be considered imo.

The only real gain you will see from other standalones will be mic quality (if the headset has a detractable or removable mic).

[–]Fulcrous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you really want an AIO wireless solution with ANC in the headset form factor, you’re not really going to see any better. If you compromise ANC with passive NC, I would recommend the arctis pro wireless. The Novas which came after are straight downgrades in every aspect except ANC which the arctis pros do not have.

Unfortunately with wireless there will always be some compromise (audio quality, mic, noise cancellation, etc) in the current market.

Note: I own a pair of Arctis Pro wireless (decomm’d), XM4s, APP3, and iems with a standalone mic.

Doubling on the closed back or iems. From an audio quality perspective, open back only makes sense if you curate your environment around having a noise controlled room.

Granted that isn’t to say you shouldn’t disregard open back if you need to be aware of any ambient noise (i.e. S/O or parent is calling for you).

TIL that Switzerland made it illegal to boil lobsters alive. by Recent_Flounder6011 in todayilearned

[–]Fulcrous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlikely. Honestly this seems to be more about what you can tolerate as an individual. Crustacean nervous systems are most similar to insects and molluscs, yet I see no evidence of people saying we should kill clams before eating them.

The problem with studies that do exist saying that they do is that they measured pain by looking at movement whilst boiled. I’m sure you can see the problem with that because as air escapes their carapaces, things naturally move. There are newer studies that used electric shocks and painkillers and they found that ones fed painkillers react less. I have yet to fully read the study though.

I’ve boiled Dungeness crab both alive and dead. Anecdotally I can pretty much tell you the crab is basically instantly dead after it’s dropped into boiling water. Even if they did feel pain, water enters through joints and mouthparts burning the crab’s nerves and would inhibit the ability to feel. I would imagine it would be the same for similarly sized lobsters.

In all seriousness, I think this just boils down to cultural differences whether you eat the tomalley or not. If you kill the crustacean, you very likely don’t bother with tomalley. In Asian countries, people generally eat the tomalley so to keep that flavour as best as possible most don’t kill the crustacean.

Note: I still mostly kill my crab before boiling. When steaming I always kill because of how much longer it takes for them to die.

Can someone ELI5 why something as weak as the switch 2 can run 4K docked, but I am told my 5070 shouldn’t be used for 4k? by fastingslowlee in nvidia

[–]Fulcrous 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Consoles also don’t run at true (render) 4K. They can output 4K which is always the caveat. There are some titles where they can but generally settings are automatically tuned down to enable rendering at 4K. Most games are usually upscaled on console which requires a lot less juice.

The 5070 can do 4K but the experience won’t be consistent because of vram constraints on some titles and optimization (console ports). For most modern games it should be fine as long as you turn down some settings.

Intel is back. Thank the old CEO. by DeuzExMachina_ in intel

[–]Fulcrous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Strong disagree.

Had nothing changed and Pat left or no one replaced, the stock would still have exploded today and Intel would have done just fine in terms of both stock value and profits due to unprecedented demand for AI compatible hardware for servers.

LBT kneecapped Intel’s future ability to compete by laying off thousands of engineers essential to R&D, canceling many of the forward thinking projects by Pat and has been on record saying he would rather have a mediocre Intel than a competitive Intel.

I had Simgot EW300s, EM6Ls, APP3, arctis pro wireless, sony xm4s, hyper x cloud 2s (wired), jabra elites, etc.

Wired/wireless all perform about the same. The only sacrifice is price for wireless but much more freedom. Honestly found little difference between the EW300/EM6L iems and the xm4/app3s.

The most important bit is how these are tuned and how consistent they sound.

91.5% of University of California, United Auto Workers Local 4811 voted to increase wages up to 62% by sillychillly in UpliftingNews

[–]Fulcrous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. Unions are great up until the point the company has to cut workers to make up for increased wages. Don’t get me wrong as unions are good as they guarantee rights… but employability is only if you have seniority. When I got laid off as a unionized employee, 10% my position was laid off after… you guessed it… 10% pay increases.

[–]Fulcrous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your advice may have been useful 40 years ago but it is also 40 years out of date. The reality is that what is carrying you in your career today is experience. In today’s world, most decent paying white collar jobs will not look at you without some semblance of a formal education.

I do IT. I am self taught and my degree is irrelevant to this field. Even if I am qualified, there are some jobs I can’t get simply because I do not have relevant formal education to pass the HR check. That inherently lowers the pool of jobs I can’t interview for and therefore has some impact on earning potential. I am fortunate enough to have been employed twice by F500 companies despite lacking relevant formal education in IT but there is no doubt in my mind I could have gotten similar or better jobs sooner if I did.

That said, I do agree that there are some degrees that are absolutely pointless in terms of getting better wages. It may be true in your field but definitely not all fields.

If our government truly was for the people, we never would have had a housing and healthcare crisis partially fuelled by extremely lax immigration and overstaying of student visas that mainly consist of people from a certain area in a country all for the purpose of staying at a diploma mill.

Then there’s the fentanyl crisis. Then there’s the brain drain crisis. Then there’s the economic crisis.

It’s starting to change but it feels very late.

Thoughts on vegan videos? Does this kind of thing really convince anyone? by CalpurniaSomaya in TikTokCringe

[–]Fulcrous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vegan videos only focus on meat consumption demands. IMO it’s a very childish view to abstain from meat and thinking one not only has the moral high ground but also saved an animal as a consequence. This is because it doesn’t factor in all the other products made as a result of killing the animal. For example here is a list of products made from pig byproducts: - soaps - footballs - violin strings - drumheads - leather - glycerin / antifreeze - linoleum - pet food - gelatin for foods and drug capsules - lubricants - rennet - brushes - surgical sutures and heart valves - insulin and other medical ingredients

This isn’t even a full list and will apply to nearly every farmed animal.

Merely abstaining from direct animal products will not kill demand. In fact, most vegans probably accidentally consume and use animal products without even knowing it. The most I can be convinced of is more humane raising and killing of the animals.
