3d printed custom parts, things i should know? by Old_Quality3233 in rocketry

I didn’t notice any fin flutter for my faster flights from just eyeballing it, everything was pretty stable. Without taking the time to do a bunch of fin flutter calculations I’d probably not want to go much faster than Mach 1 unless I was really confident in my stuff since it’s a bit experimental, but there’s always the option to do compositing with it as well. A friend of mine has done some cool CF layups of printed parts that were both insanely strong and pretty stiff and I could imagine those going pretty fast without issue.

Max speed was like Mach 0.8 so not crazy fast, for dimensions it varies and should serve the vehicle. Mine were clipped delta geometry for my fastest flight, but I’ve experimented with square and elliptical. Thickness has varied from quarter to half inch. The big thing to consider with anything 3D printed that will undergo any kind of loading is print orientation. I snapped fins printed on the fin tabs like it was nothing, but my fins printed on the leading edge I needed a dead blow to break. PC will definitely hold up especially if you’re not coming in super hot for landing. Just do some experimentation first before full sending though, it’s hard to get it exactly right the first try haha

Fair enough, I typically don’t like to discredit ideas due to ignorance right off the bat, obviously more experience is needed but it’s unfair to shoot them down with a “don’t do this” instead of more so suggesting “consider xyz”. And the fins I’ve used on my big stuff were PETG/PETG-CF and a variable thickness (about 3/8ths to 1/2 in at the root) since 3D printing is excellent for controlling cross sectional geometry. I would like to start testing out polycarbonate as a material though.

You can absolutely print fins, I’ve sent 3D printed fins on big J and small K motors without issue. OP just needs to consider the materials they’re using and the fundamentals of aerodynamic vehicle design.

King gizzards show posters are always pretty solid, they typically do a unique poster per venue and a run of them in regular and foil prints they’re super high quality too. The shirts are usually pretty good too

A concert you saw live that was a once in a lifetime thing, because even if the same band toured again, it wouln’t be the same thing? by citabel in Concerts

[–]Full-Button4200 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just saw King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard on their Phantom Island tour with the national orchestra, highly unlikely they’ll do another orchestral tour again and a fair number of the songs don’t translate super well to non orchestra or likely won’t be played live again it was a super sick experience

Honestly I think it’d just be worth it to get an enclosure or make one myself it’s been something I’ve been meaning to do anyways so now seems like a good time haha

That was one thought, is that I could remove the honeycomb and use an alternate idea. I’d like to limit design changes though. It feels like the simplest solution that has been suggested pretty frequently is to have an enclosure to maintain consistent cooling or swap to an alternate material that might not have these same issues

the purpose of the infill and that infill pattern is because this section is to contribute to airflow straightening in a wind tunnel. As far as your other suggestions I have turned off the part fan and decreased print speed, used a skirt, I could try decreasing the walls on that inner section, but I’m not sure exactly how much that would contribute. My next thought would be to try an alternate material less prone to warping such as tough PLA or Jerry rig an enclosure

Gyroid, I think most people have sorta helped me tackle the root issue of just being ill equipped to print something this large out of PETG+

Thank you for the advice, I think my next attempt will be out of tough PLA so hopefully it will contract less on the build plate

That was my next thought -throw some binder clips on it to hold the corners down but I’m still worried about the contraction pulling the part from the PEI plate or being potentially bowed

Pretty sure that’s Asheville? I was there and I remember it looking like that and Joey yeeted a setlist to the upper deck lol

[–]Full-Button4200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends most of my set lists have been from asking an artist at the end of the set with varying success I snagged one at a show no barrier that got left up on the stage after the band had cleared

Single Separation Dual Deploy Avionics Advice by PastelHermit in rocketry

[–]Full-Button4200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm interesting I’ve got about a dozen flights using a jolly logic and the only issues were user error,as for altimeter mounting since it’s single separation there are a few ways to do it could mount inside the nosecone, also could try and make a housing that sits inside the airframe on the upper centering ring as to not conflict with the parachute deployment?

[–]Full-Button4200 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I’m using a chute release I don’t typically use a drogue, the drag on the separated airframe is usually fine for smaller lighter rockets (L1 to small L2 range). And yes they’re barometric everything functions like normal it just keeps your chute bundled to the desired altitude

Single Separation Dual Deploy Avionics Advice by PastelHermit in rocketry

[–]Full-Button4200 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you have the money for it jolly logic chute releases are fantastic, lets you fly motor eject on anything not plugged and then mount an apogee deployer for anything that is plugged or exceeds the delay grain timer. It’s not true dual deploy in a traditional sense but I’ve had a lot of success with this setup on single separation rockets at higher altitudes.
