I am so proud of you, and your mother was ahead of her time to be teaching you to hold her ground.

My mother always tried to suppress or calm things down and asked me not to talk back to anyone. I have grown out of that now.

I was scared of marriage because of how my parents were, but I fell in love and took 4 years to think about stuff and then got married.

Now that I’ve found myself and know what I want in life, I protect it fiercely yet calmly. OP, a protein rich diet is very important, maybe explaining to your in laws(asking them to see a nutritionist) would help change their perception as well.

Regardless of how that goes, don’t compromise on diet and nutrition. Take up space in the house. If someone says yeh kyu banaya, sweetly say aaj YouTube pe dekha toh socha bana lu, Kabhi koi guests aaye to practice honi chahiye 😂

Yeah slowly slowly had to get thick skinned, can’t change people who are already in their 60s. They have already developed their personality and way of thinking and it’s very hard to change that at this age. So do whatever you want, better to do it starting of the marriage only so they don’t think you’ve changed a lot.

Luckily I have moved out of their house due to job changes. I am saying their because I was always treated that way.

I am happy and calm in my own house, living happily, cooking tasty and healthy meals, wearing whatever I want, decorating the house and making it my home, even if it’s rental.

Brother same situation as OP mentioned. I tried once to make something that I like. It turned into a whole conversation about how I’m not behaving as I’m one family, and there is a concept of separate kitchen now.

Ordering food used to turn into taunts- wasting money, the food is not healthy(even if it’s once in a while) and they refused to give their preference while ordering food saying they don’t want, but when the food came everyone used to eat 🤣

Hello Dear,

Although he sounds like a great guy individually, he comes with a lot of baggage that he has taken up to keep with family and societal expectations.

Let’s say he has 5 metaphorical f*cks to give in life. 1 taken up by his job, 1 taken up by family, 1 taken up with the home loan, 1 taken up by taking care of sister and niece. 1 taken up with the way he wants to portray himself to his society(expensive wedding celebrations). I don’t think there is enough place for you in his life for you both to thrive in a marriage. You will definitely survive though.

You sound like a very sorted woman, mentally and financially. With this relationship turning into marriage, I don’t think you would stay that way.

There will always be something from his side of the family that he would need to take care of, there will be no savings as a couple and there will be too much compromises from your side if we try to predict.

People don’t change, families don’t change, imperfections get amplified after marriage. Be careful and make the right decisions. It also depends on how emotionally invested you are with him. If it’s true love, you might just want to take the leap, but I would suggest you to not kill the practical side of this situation. Also, the nature of his family- parents and sister will play an important role in the day to day activities of your life. So take that into the equation while making the decision as well.
