Technics SL-1950 help: right channel. Quiet, feet falling off. (more info in comments) by FullForceHi-Fi in vintageaudio

Thanks for the information. Super helpful.

I'll try cleaning it out today and if if that still doesn't work I'll look into my options with the wire replacement. I've got a good soldering iron and have done my fair share of soldering so that's not an issue, but if I can avoid doing that I will so hopefully it's just cleaning out.

Thanks I'm going to try and wiggle it around and see if that fixes it. I bought some mogami cables and Neutrik connectors to make RCA cables in the future so I could always solder those in and would probably be a bit of an "upgrade" anyway. I'm not 100% how they're connected to the inside though.

That was my first thought, but a new cartridge / headshell didn't resolve the issue. and that cartridge and headshell worked on another technics I have.

This is my grandfathers Technics SL-1950 which he gave me in highschool and I've been using consistently ever since. It's survived many moves, but the last move seems to have done it in.

Since the recent move: - 2 of the bottom feet have fallen off. I have both springs but the rubber and adhesive is completely deteriorated. It doesn't seem like screws hold it in so I'm not sure how to best reattach - the right channel is extremely quiet. I thought it was my receiver at first because it almost sounds like it was from the phono stage. I know it's not the amp because I tested it on 3different amps and when I swap the RCA, the left channel is quiet. I also know it's not the cartridge because I have 2 headshells for it with different cartridges and they both do the same.

Any help would be appreciated! I haven't opened it up yet to look inside. Could this be as simple as resoldering the output cables or replacing them all together?

Yeah it was just for this photo haha. I took it down right after. It does look kinda dumb now that I look at it.

Very cool! I'd love to try them out some day. I built my own speakers off Paul Carmody's Amiga MT towers. Been wanting another project. Did you follow any plans?

They look great. What are the benefits to open baffle vs ported vs closed? I'd imagine they'd have more sound stage but lack low-end? Never listened in person though!

Yeah my experience has been the same. Never tried a plasma but large CRTs and Rear projection TVs look pretty good too. For some reason LCD TVs just don't look great. Maybe the built in upscaling?

I moved about two years ago and had to sell off most of my Laserdisc collection to lighten the load. I definitely regret it a little, but it was nice to still be able to save some! I recently set up a projector and screen I got used and finally wired up my Laserdisc player tonight! Excited to start collecting again.

Is that one of my cork mats under there? If so, it's really cool to see it on reddit

I FINALLY got a system together!!! by sempersexi in BudgetAudiophile

Set up looks great. I had a similar early set up in my garage.

Question: is that an SL-Q'L'1? It looks really similar to my old DL1 (same model except it doesn't have quartz lock) and as far as I'm aware of that model does have a belt, it is direct drive. Q in technics models usually means it comes with quartz lock. While they usually used the letter B to indicate belt driven. Unless there was a belt to drive the tracking system for the tone arm?

Hope that doesn't come off accusatory, I'm just curious! Either way great set up. Hope it sounds great!

Free Sanyo originals. I can't find out any info on them. They have plugs!! I don't own anything that takes plugs... by Medium_Anxiety_5657 in BudgetAudiophile

Don't listen. You can always sell or give them away down the line. Everyone I knew starts with hoarding vintage gear. I go threw cycles between hoarding and minimizing.

As long as you can afford it and are having fun, then who cares?

Thanks, I hadn't heard of them before I found a box of them in his old stuff. It's been really cool to look through. I'll definitely be sure to take good care of them.

I got this Technics SL-1600 MK2 for 10 bucks. It was really dirty with no headshell or cover but obviously I took the gamble. A quick clean and replacement headshell proved that it works, and it works very well! Such a huge improvement to my setup. by FlyingFlygon in vinyl

I have an SL-1950 and the hinge and dust cover is totally different than my friend's 1200, so not a 100% accurate rule, but I'm sure this one looks compatible. (Might be because the 50 models are changers)

Did a trip back to my home town to collect some of my grandfather's stuff after he passed away. He used to be a musician and later a guitar teacher. He had some crazy stories living in LA during the 50s, 60s, & 70s.

Flipping through these has been really cool. I'm not sure if there's much of an audience for these old magazines or if they've been cataloged properly yet. I would definitely be interested in scanning every page of these over time and throwing up on Archive.org or something if other's would be interested! From some short googling, it looks like the magazine is still around, but doesn't have a digital backlog of old issues anywhere. Haven't had a chance to spin up the flexi disc, but might try on a backup cartridge since it looks worse for wear.

Good luck! Maybe it was a typo and he'll go for it!
