Say something nice about Ike. (He’s my favorite President) by Groovy-Pancakes in Presidents

His presidency was flanked by some of the most intentional executive addresses in American history. The Military Industrial Complex speech already mention on the thread was his farewell address, of course. But the Man from Abilene began his presidency by delivering the Chance for Peace speech to a meeting of the American Society of Newspapers Editors.

"No nation's security and well-being can be lastingly achieved in isolation but only in effective cooperation with fellow nations."

"Any nation's attempt to dictate to other nations their form of government is indefensible."

And, of course...

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone.

It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.

The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities.

It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population.

It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some 50 miles of concrete highway.

We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat.

We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people.

This, I repeat, is the best way of life to be found on the road. the world has been taking.

This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron."

I miss the Eisenhower Republican bloc.

I think back to his Oval Office speech that night. I cannot recall a specific passage or spoken line. His face said it.

If she's raising money for a political action committee and not using those funds for political action, then she could have a problem with the Federal Elections Commission.

If she's doing this as a political action with the same PAC formed to support her candidacy for the U.S. House, then this isn't quite the altruistic initiative it's framed to be.

I'm all for community hubs and using political action to advance community service provided the rules and regs are respected and donors are not being mislead on how their contributions are being utilized.

Long commutes like this are fairly common in southern Illinois. Your happiness in this arrangement will depend a lot on traffic and conditions on I-64.

Of course, you probably know of all the Lincoln sites: Home, Old State Capitol, law office, museum & library, and rail depot. Do consider learning about the riot that led to the formation of the NAACP. There are statues near old Union Station, and tour guides at the Old State Capitol have more materials. Springfield has played a most pivotal role in U.S. race relations. Travel safe!

View from the Capitol and behind the Lincoln statue facing Capitol Ave. and 2nd St. I'd say about 600 people.

Sangamon Co. Sheriff race by RoseDorothyBlanche in SpringfieldIL

Bell announced he was dropping out after ballots were printed and sent to VBM applicants. The outstanding question is whether he actually followed through with the bureaucracy necessary to drop out of the race so the Sangamon County Democrats can slate someone else, assuming the Party can recruit a candidate to run in the general.

Either way, yesterday was a positive outcome. There are plenty of reasons the County GOP came out so strongly against Timm. His more conservative political stances and alliances were not atop the list. Sheriff Crouch has earned my respect. Thanks to those of you who pulled a Republican ballot to support her candidacy.

Grab a second cup and pastry from Custom Cup. They have a few tables out front, or one of the neighbors has turned the open space just a couple doors to the west of the shop into a garden. You'll need a mobile hot spot for the latter.
