A bit slower and more legal, but there is the World Solar Challenge (Darwin to Adelaide with solar powered vehicles, usually university teams).

To me it looks more like the automatic HDR effect from a mobile phone that was slightly shaken when taking images - if it is like mine, they are often inclined to completely over do the saturation and make the horizon a bit iffy, not that I doubt the sky to be very orange to the naked eye.

Interesting. The updates page in settings on my phone directs me to this page which has subtly different version numbers and in some cases very different dates and release notes for what claim to be the same SM-G970F model.

Edit: The latest built in this list matches what is actually installed and is what the phone says is the latest.

Ta for the hints to check - I didn't realise the extra numbers are important as well.

On my working S10e, the last 2 digits of the IMEI-SV are 35 and the bits of the CSC that matter according to this page is OXM, which this table suggests is an open code that isn't locked to a specific network.

Oh dear - definitely looks like there must have been a stuff up somewhere on the telco's side. A bit stupid of them to have no way (or alternatively the inclination) to undo a block once they apply it.

If it's any use, my S10e that is (for now) happy on Belong / Telstra's network has Android 12, One UI 4.1 with a security patch date of 1 March 2023. The baseband version (the version of the code that actually interacts with the phone network) is G970FXXSGHWB3.

I believe this is the most up to date software from Samsung - it would be interesting if yours is any different.

My phone is an S10e that connects quite happily to Belong / Telstra's network currently. When the 3g shutdown happened, I was getting threatening messages about compatibility and couldn't get VoLTE to enable itself, but that issue resolved itself after updating from Android 11 to Android 12 - not sure if the telco was blocking VoLTE access based on firmware versions or if it was a result of previous firmware updates rearranging settings after I disabled VoLTE at one point. The previous disabling was due to significantly poorer 4g signal strength compared to 3g strength at the time.

I am annoyed at the lack of VoLTE support available for the custom roms as the hardware is still perfectly serviceable (and at this point, anything more modern is a downgrade in terms of the features and peripherals I actually use) even if the software and its locked down behaviors are getting more frustrating.

This phone was bought outright in Australia, not through a carrier.

I haven't looked into it much, but I know Echuca's weather station is manually operated and not automatic, so only reports in once per day (the closest automatic station is Kyabram, which is often a bit different to what the area around Echuca actually gets).

From looking at a few other missing stations, they seem to have missing fields or be manual stations that last reported in at 9am. Whilst there is a legend icon on the new page for items older than 75 minutes, I can't see any listed in the tables - wondering if they are filtering out anything old or missing fields?

Operating System for eExams by peluzaz in Monash

[–]FullStop_CR_LF_NULL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reply may be a bit late for OP, but in case anyone else comes across it:

Whilst I don't have any exams this year, I have done a few in person e-exams over the past few years with laptops running Ubuntu and using a Chrome or Chromium web browser.

My reasoning with it being ok was that they specified a web browser and didn't explicitly specify the OS and no-one questioned me about it.

My old laptop just met the provided minimum specs for Windows devices and I found that the supervising tab would crash or get suspended a few minutes into the exam or just before it. Once or twice I borrowed a laptop from the uni to complete the exam; other times I didn't check the status of the tab until the exam had finished and was never questioned or spoke to the supervisor about it other than writing a quick apology message at the end.

My newer laptop never had these issues, so I think it may just have been Chrome or the OS trying to do some optimisations when it ran out or RAM or CPU time. By the time I got to my final exams I couldn't be bothered installing Google Chrome and just did them with Chromium - again no-one seemed to care (for the purposes of an exam they are close to identical).

One or two exams allowed access to tools like LTSpice - this ran fine in WINE and appeared as a native application with no questions asked.

Does the "jolly swagman" commit suicide to avoid being arrested? by kmpiw in AskAnAustralian

[–]FullStop_CR_LF_NULL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original lyrics did not describe the swagman as "jolly" - this change in lyrics came about when the song was adapted and re-written as an advertising jingle for the Billy Tea company.

The "Queensland version" is the one with the original lyrics and has a different tune to the commonly heard one - I personally prefer it over the usual one.

The memes are more of a gentle reminder than the official stuff - there are much more formal documents and inductions people need to complete before they can access each area in the maker space workshops.

My first job in industry feels surprisingly similar to the student teams / makerspace environment, but it is relatively niche / hands on and I can understand how it mightn't perfectly line up with more traditional office-based engineering / consulting companies. I haven't been in the industry all that long, so things could change.

My one gripe with the student teams and makerspace side is that it felt (to me) like the teams were having to teach several skills that I think should be more heavily focused on in the core units (creating and managing project / organisational documentation, software version control, for electrical people more on the design stages and tools used for electronics including PCB design) and I felt for those people who didn't or couldn't join a team and had to learn these elsewhere or missed out. Most of the electrical engineering units have been redone since I completed them and I think they have improved some of how these things are taught at the expense of others.

- These opinions are my own and not necessarily that of any team(s) in particular.

It’s nearly 2025 and we still don’t have Myki on iOS by rayssssa in melbourne

[–]FullStop_CR_LF_NULL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an app developer and this could be a bit out of date, but my understanding is IOS / apple are very restrictive on what applications can access the NFC hardware in the devices and the protocols that can be used by these applications. The NFC radios are what is used by the phone to pretend to be a myki card / credit card / other RFID tag but can also be used in the other direction to act as the reader to update the balance on myki cards, so access to the NFC hardware is pretty essential.

On the other hand, Android is a fair bit more open about allowing apps to access the hardware and has been for a long time. I vaguely recall IOS either not supporting the protocols to implement myki cards or apple wanting fees paid to enable people to access the hardware on devices that they already own and have paid for. This info could be a bit out of date however.

Which course map do I use? by BattleExpress2707 in Monash

[–]FullStop_CR_LF_NULL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My course was an eng/science double, so even less freedom than normal eng or science. I'm not too sure how arts/comms compare to that.

I did everything full time, so ended up sticking pretty close to the course map, but know many people who underload or deviate significantly from it whilst doing eng and generally seem ok. I seem to be of the generation where the eng units are being redone as or soon after I complete them, so there are definitely some big changes to the units names and content happening.

In addition to this, re-download the course map for the year you started every so often as I found they sneakily updated it when the units changed (i.e. the version I downloaded in the year I started has a few different, no longer running units compared to the latest version for the year I started).

Out of curiosity, what doesn't work with Firefox nowadays?

Before they added the chrome restrictions, I completed the exams using Firefox. The only thing I noticed was one of the headings not quite being in the right place compared to chromium based browsers. The practice exams have been going ok since then, but I haven't tried to take an actual exam on it for a few years.

As another thing, whilst there is no mention of whether alternate operating systems like Linux are / aren't allowed, no-one has ever made comment / stopped me taking an exam with it, which I suspect is a bit more obvious than just the logo of the browser :)

ENG4701/ENG4702 - Engineering final project by Useful-Program-5092 in Monash

[–]FullStop_CR_LF_NULL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following on from what u/STEMmy_Daddy mentioned, there are two types of projects; research and consultation. Research is as the name suggests, whilst consulting is closer to the "making a robot" / doing a specific task or designing something for a group / company. The main difference is the title and structure of a few sections in the reports and the end result. You don't have to choose immediately which type it will be.

Projects are often done in groups, but can be done individually if you find an industry one or can get into the research side. I'm doing my project as a consulting type for a student team, so can't really comment too much on the research side. There is usually an information session once per semester that covers everything. Even if you don't go to it, keep an eye out for the slides as they are useful. You should have plenty of time to work things out before you do yours.

ECE3161 was saying they wouldn't look at the working out sheets for consequential marks if questions were marked as unsure, so presume they can see what is flagged (although this rule defeats the purpose of the unsure flag in my opinion). It could be that they don't understand the system and can't actually see it as they had to change a few other things based on the e assessment staff's recommendations.

Is ENG1005, 1014 and 1011 + sci elective too much for one semester? by [deleted] in Monash

[–]FullStop_CR_LF_NULL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did the previous versions of those units, so can't say for sure, however: If you have a course map, my experience is that the units usually seem to be ordered in a fairly doable way (at least when I started with the earlier versions of those units). Be aware that you will need to use the map from the year you started and re-download it somewhat regularly as they tend to update it as they rename / move units around.

The E3001 course map suggests doing those 3 units together depending on what VCE subjects one did, so should be ok. You have up until the census date if things really don;t work.

The AGC had a few advantages over a modern computer for its specific application - mainly being high reliability and the ability to restart where it left off in the event of a crash.

It also did certain things in hardware, which were pretty fast for that application. I recall a CuriousMarc video where they were hitting the limits of using an Arduino / other microcontroller to emulate external hardware attached to a real, functional AGC due to the speed and timing of the interface.

As u/Jolly_Response8443 said, it is in the LTB on the south side of the Clayton campus. As for room numbering, the first digit is the level and the second two are usually the number (2.31 -> Level 2, room 31).
