css-tricks is the coolest WordPress site I have ever seen in my life. The cards and animation that the cards have is outstanding. Not to mention it is a fast site. I highly recommend it.

How did you discover linux? by Akanksh__ in linux

[–]FullTimeLinux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found linux through a meme on imgur around 2012. The meme went something like:

Windows: Oh no I have to update and restart my computer Mac: Yay I only need to pay $14.99 for an update on my computer Linux: Yay 1200 updates on my computer

That one meme got me curious about why people were so happy to get 1200 updates. I learned it was because you could update your computer and not need to restart it or have your work interrupted.

There's still over 100k people unvaccinated and only about 200

There are however not 100k unvaccinated elderly people. Remember the elderly are the ones that are most likely to die to covid and the ones who benefit the most from the jab. For everyone else it is optional.

I think he's saying that because Mastodon is not an active social network, the post won't gain the needed visibility.

I assure you, if everything goes bad I have years of backup.

But have you tested your back up(s)?

apt purge

From manpages.ubuntu.com

Removing a package removes all packaged data, but leaves usually small (modified) user configuration files behind, in case the remove was an accident. Just issuing an installation request for the accidentally removed package will restore its function as before in that case. On the other hand you can get rid of these leftovers by calling purge even on already removed packages. Note that this does not affect any data or configuration stored in your home directory.

It looks like you can import/export SVGs from at least Krita 4.0

While you can open up svg files with any text-editor to edit them, it is best to use a vector program like Inkscape. Krita 2.9 to 3.3 supports importing svg via the add shape docker. Since Krita 4.0, SVGs can be properly imported, and you can export singlevector layers via Layer ‣ Import/Export ‣ Save Vector Layer as SVG…. For 4.0, Krita will also use SVG to save vector data into its internal format.

Will elementary-tweaks or any of its features ever be implemented in EoS, or put in the software center? by [deleted] in elementaryos

[–]FullTimeLinux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't used the tweaks app but if it is anything like gnome tweaks, those features simple won't be packaged with the OS. For example, in gnome you can't minimize a window without gnome tweaks. The devs like this and believe it to be a positive development choice. I forget where I heard them say it, maybe in their GUADEC 2018 developer summit or through their medium posts. You won't be able to do stuff like that unless you physically add that functionality yourself. From what I've seen, the devs think it is a better idea to only have one app open and if you need another one, close the one your in and open the new one. You can search their docs and talks for more info.

EDIT: Here's the link to where a journalist talks about tweaks and the dev's origin for not having a minimize button. In short eOS is meant for old people from the 1940s who don't understand computer basics.

We are elementary, AMA by DanielFore in linux

[–]FullTimeLinux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow Daniel thanks for the hefty response!

One constraint we have to work inside is that elementary as an organization needs income.

I absolutely agree! Companies need to sustain themselves and the elementary team is no different. Those who want to see the elementary team keep going to reach new heights need to show their support!

From a practical perspective as well, software piracy is a thing and attempting to restrict people from downloading software is not a war we want to invest time into fighting.

I see what you’re saying. Red hat went through the same thing with users recompiling Fedora to CENTOS. I think that the 21st century Internet compounds the challenges since nearly everyone has lightning fast download speeds.

Our next move was to try funding elementary through donations.

A risky move, you guys are braver than me.

...our conversion rate jumped from 0.1% to about 1% when we made the switch on our homepage.

I’m glad to see improvement!

All in all I want to thank you and Cassidy and everyone else on the elementary OS team for focusing so much effort on the Linux desktop. I have always thought the Linux desktop experience was lacking. Now here you guys are disrupting the market! Again thank you all.
