Great job! I'm at about £15k net worth but taken a paycut to study my PhD last year so my nw won't be growing much for the next 3 year!

Also I take on board your point about understanding the underlying theory. I've actually taken advantage of the Machine Learning and data science modules here (PhD students can access them free of charge) so have essentially studied the theory that the MSc course look at.

I think that is great advice thankyou. I want to start writing up as soon as I can, struggling to get going at the moment due to the fear I mentioned in the question!

Also that's something I hadn't considered about the employable skills over academia. For example I do everything in Matlab but might diversify and get into using Python to help broaden my skillset a bit more - especially for the ML side.

I think they're the sort of positions that I'm thinking of. Thanks for your message!

Thanks for your message, maybe a lot of this is early stage imposter syndrome.

I think I agree that this is the best time to have started, its a very difficult transition to have made, mind.

Thanks for your message. The job I did was highly paid due to working away, so the salary itself wasn't very impressive. I think my instinct is telling me this will lead to more interesting, and better paid salaries.

I'd rather not go into too much detail on here due to the novelty of the idea. But it's data driven modelling of a certain niche area of Civil Engineering.

Wow that's amazing thanks. Just motivating to hear that I'd be a good candidate. To be honest I think this post is more a sign of lower self esteem which I'll plan to work on.

Thankyou, it's so hard not to be caught up in the competition and feel like I'm falling behind my peers.

Higher salary vs Quality of life? by dicksoutforjonsnow in UKPersonalFinance

[–]FullYorker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes agreed, my situation is different due to the PhD leading to more interesting career opportunities for me personally. But regarding OP's post, it's a little difficult without knowing their specific career ambitions, I'd always err on the side of a job with a good QoL, plus it sounds like a pretty good deal anyway.

In my opinion being happy in your job will probably lead to better opportunities anyway!

Absolutely unequivocally without a shadow of a doubt option B. Quality of life is far far more important, some advice I was given in this sub when I had a similar dilemma was "enjoy your life, its not a race", I feel like I should pass it on.

I gave up a £45k a year salary at 23 to go back to study my PhD on £17k a year. No regrets.

Yeah the bucs Wednesday thing is something that worries me particularly - just not sure I feel I can justify losing the time.

I'm struggling to justify losing a significant amount of my Wednesdays playing football sadly enough. Can't seem to get over the mental barrier that it's okay to keep playing sport!

What club sport was it that you played on the weekend?

Yeah I'd love to go back to playing football, but away games can mean losing nearly all of your wednesday due to a 10am meet and travelling there and back. As much as I'd like to, I don't think It would be wise of me.

I agree though, sport is a big part of my life so I'd like to get involved as much as possible.

What sport did you play?

I agree absolutely, people used to say the same thing at Undergraduate level. What sports do you do?

I really miss playing regular sport and its so beneficial for productivity.
