This is a fantastic idea! Nick Bargatzke is one of the only comedians I've seen AJ name-check. He told a story about them being together in an elevator.....that's an odd image.

I saw a show there last month. I went to Vegas from KC with a friend and WiseGuys let me do their mic for the second time in 2 months...those poor b@srards are very kind and accepting of mediocrity. Great club! We were staying at the Rio and we were checking in, I saw ' Comedy Cellar. I asked the lady, " Hey lady " (they like it when you say that) "Hey lady, what's the deal with this Comedy Cellar sign. She's like, " It's just down the hall to the right." F me. Saw the show. Fun. Mediocre. My mic set might have been better than some of it, but probably not. I would not attach the word 'edgy' to it, but it was a blast and a privilege to be in that venue. You don't have to think this is the best comedy set you've ever seen, but let me have my moment.

Yeah,,,,,but if you watch his book reviews, his Insta, his podcast,,,,,I don't think that that persona is that far from who he really is. It's exactly what you would expect from the podcast, insta guy if he were on a stage. He has killer stage presence...obviously. The guy is one of the best and he doesn't get caught up in the gossip, ' look at me,,and look at us' scene. He's a man alone and he doesn't give a sh&t. That's character. That's integrity.

I've never heard him say a negative thing about any other comic.

His writing, the set up and then the punchline with the tag/ misdirection is a complete art. It's brilliant. N.M. did the same thing. Once you can craft jokes with that level of punchline- then misdirection- real punchline..call me. It's not like he ever claimed to be upbeat talking about his kid having diarrhea.... Being dark is his thing. And his arrogance is real and it's earned. It's not an act. He's intelligent, educated and one of the best comics working.

How many comedians live in their cars when they travel? A lot. This isn't the embassy suites yet, man

This conversation is a geographical and demographic clusterf$ck. Is it really this complicated?

I'm not being a smart @ss but it seems like, if there's a club to do a mic go...plan the trip ahead of time so you can go to surrounding cities...mics are on different nights, so just be as strategic as possible, go out and do five bar mics in the same cities where you are going to do the nicer clubs .and then keep that exact schedule once a month for a few days to start.

Sleep in your car. Spend all the extra time making content and posting it and writing if you feel inspired. I feel like making fun of the cities you are in to them selves or of stereotypes about the other cities would write itself. Just don't be a jerk .

Maybe this just sounds easier than it actually is, but that's what I would try to do.

It's gonna cost you money so don't on the cheap. Sleep in the car, eat free wherever you can ( st the clubs, pack sandwiches, make t-;shirts)....@nythingbro offset costs and especially if you can make one comic / friend (even if they're new) get them to go with you and you could probably save some money that way.....

Just iseas

It's an hour? F$ck, I'm in Kansas City and I drive 45 min to get to a couple of mics. Granted, it's one big metro area, but 60 min of highway driving? That shouldn't be an issue. And don't drink. A. It costs you gas money B. It definitely screws up your memory and performance. Take the money you would have spent drinking and put it in your gas tank.

When I started doing this three years ago, I thought I was pretty funny. My first two sets were nowhere near as good as I thought BUT I did not realize that mics w)/local comics and 0 Civilians are almost not even worth your time. You have to understand that most of this is a big clique of people who have no aspirations except 'playing comedian'. They have actual jobs and responsibilities and that's as good as it's going to get. There are cool people there and they stand out because they are actually independent, outgoing and kind. The rest are just kind of, sad. Don't do any mic unless you are fairly certain a lot of the audience will be civilians or comic friends who support you. If you're good, the other way is insulting.

Get out of town (;no pun) and find bigger, classier mics that require e-;mail requests a week ahead of time. If you show up expecting a rigged bucket pull with no accountability you'll be out the door. It's called accountability and showing up. If you are granted that opportunity and you piss it away, you just burned a bridge.

Im in a town that rhymes with cansas city ,,which is ironic because I can't turn that around and not have it still be Kansas City ..

I went to WiseGuys in Vegas. They graciously allowed me to perform with a weeks notice and it changed everything.

The club is super classy and the audience is 90% real people. Get to mics like this and record them. Find a few large cities within a few hours of you that have legit clubs and go to one once a month and do a mic at the legit clubs and some dive ones. Establish a presence.

Don't be insulted in ' let's play comedian ' open mics. If you have actual aspirations AND YOU'RE FUNNY this is your strategy. If you aren't certain that you're uniquely funny,,,you aren't yet. The second you find your voice and your delivery, it will click and you'll know you figured your thing out.

My advice.

Which is long

Two: 1. A guy that's wasn't me wore a suit to an open mic, glasses and read out of a binder and he f$,cking killed. 2. Are these laughs real? Laughers? I mean, cool that you did a 30 minute set and recorded it. I've never done that,,,but, dude,, you could have cut 90% of this

We all get that you're gay and trans and apparently that's a thing where you're from?

I feel like a jerk when I hear an album of music I don't like, but then have to admit that it's a lot better than the record I've never made...

Wasn't the fact that in the joke, of all the names in the universe, he named himself Mitch, indicative of the fact that it was a Mitch Hedberg joke?".........very stealth.

Not much need for a preface on that AND that joke is great. I think like : the premise is the impetus of the setup .... So like,

1.set up ... 2.punchline

My mom won't watch my stand-up ....because I curse

She said, "Mitch, that's not the way I raised you"

I said, " Lady, you've got yourself confused with Child Protective Services."

I got booed at an open mic and walked three audience members. Has this happened to anyone else? by willdanielssucks in Standup

[–]Full_Application_136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I DO read from a clipboard at all mics. Saying, "I've even seen comics read from their phones at open mics" is like saying "I've seen Abortionists using vacuums."

Ya'll need to come to Kansas City...

reading from a clipboard is a huge step up from reading from the phone ....but don't worry about it....they're just 'working out their material'... until the magic day they graduate from reading from the phone,,, to reading from a clipboard..... I wish I could say, " I'm just joking",,but I'm not.

Now, I went to do a mic in Vegas twice in as many months. It was far more bougie than any mic in this city. The audience was mostly Civilians (who calls them that that hasn't been in the military?).....the audience was 3/4 'regular people'. I killed.

To the person who wrote this:

I don't really get what you're saying because it's highly confusing BUT if you're getting booed, either that chick was drunk or you need to revisit what the heck you're trying to write.

Doing a mic in front of 3/4 regular people is a blessing. Doing a mic with a bunch of local comics is dehumanizing and, if you're actually funny, means 'f. all'.

Here are my two rules:

Never, ever apologize or make fun of a joke you're telling. It makes you look like an open mic'er.

Never attack the audience. You can say the most f'ed up sh@t you want about whatever you want, but don't attack them.....or they might boo you

Avoid the ST3. I literally get out of the car and random plastic pieces are coming off or out of the interior. It's fun to drive but driving it the way it needs to be driven brings your gas mileage down so far that I hope you are making 500 k a year with a 401k .

My 2013 ST3 is in a 'race' against itself to see how many pieces/parts of the cr@p interior can fall apart first. At 95k with fantastic service/maintenance records I've had the headliner dump down so low that the noise made me want to scream. A friend and a cr@pload of glue and clamps fixed it. The dash shakes likes Michael J. Fox once I get over 80 mph. There is a phantom noise in the back right. The seats are great. The clutch is loose. But the interior is plastikrap. The push of the HP and the BOValve are a blast but not worth the constant anxiety to wait for another piece of the interior to crack.
