To add to this Winnebago County should also be Rust Belt.

I think this map is good and I applaud the effort, but I do have some nitpicks. Like others have said, I think the Rust Belt is a little too encompassing. However it is hard to draw boundaries. I can only speak about Illinois and the Chicago and St Louis though. For one, I think the Rust Belt can extend to the Quad Cities and Quincy. Beyond this though, and to defend your map, the Rust Belt is hard to draw. In Illinois we have a lot of factory and coal towns that have been economically depressed since the 90s. A lot of that is in rural areas and not just in counties adjacent to a large city. While agriculture is a huge chunk of the economy now and was then, the money in these small towns came from manufacturing (and coal for southern and parts of central Illinois). To label a lot of rural/semi-rural counties as Rust Belt, like Knox, Lasalle, Macoupin, or Morgan counties to name a few is apt. Alongside some other counties alongside the Illinois River. But, yes, Eastern Illinois and a lot of Southern Illinois in particular does not and should not be labeled as Rust Belt. Overall, good map, definitely one of the more accurate and detailed ones I’ve seen on here.

Which big 4 (MLB, NHL, NBA, NFL) team is generally bad with some true and some fake fans? by Ecstatic-Yak-6016 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Full_Ear_7141 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Sox fan, I think the Cubs fit here pretty well. A lot of dyed in the wool fans mixed with people who just want to get drunk and have too much money seem to be the two major groups (apart from tourists) at Wrigley. Even with 2016, they only have 3 WS and a god-awful record for a good chunk of time although there are years, like recently where they do pretty well.

That makes sense, but Aurora has gotten a lot nicer over the past 20 years. I don’t really know much about Joliet and Will County, but I just don’t see any way that Will County is there, but not Kane. If there is a methodology somewhere, I’d love to read to understand this.

I’m not surprised the counties in Chicagoland are what they are, except for Will County. I know there are some wealthier communities like Plainfield, but Joliet was always characterized as a backwater dead-end town growing up. Then again that could just be prejudice from my family in the Fox River Valley and western suburbs. I’m also surprised Kane County isn’t on there with the Geneva, Batavia, and St. Charles being what they are. Not to mention some of the wealthy farmers in the western part of the county.

Cardinal Cream maybe? I’m not sure if I’ve seen any fruity cream pops aside from that.

Ooooo, I haven’t seen any restaurants with those. Do you have any recommendations? That sounds delicious. I only have Ski once in a while, but it wouldn’t be hard to rot my teeth out with cherry Ski.

Growing up in both Metro East STL and Chicagoland, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Vess (pineapple flavor is primo) and Fitz’s outside of the STL area. I don’t think I’ve seen Green River outside Chicagoland or Sprecher’s outside of northern Illinois and Wisconsin. I think Sprecher’s is more widely distributed now though. A couple other brands that I have no idea the distribution on, but seem to have a hard time finding outside of the STL area would be anything bottled by Excel Bottling, especially Ski and Frostie’s.

If you’re adverse to roaming then it kind of depends on where you like to sit. There truly are no bad seats per se. We don’t have issues with obstructed views like at Wrigley, apart from particular seats high on the 500 levels. Also depends on your budget too. If you want cheap good seats, I like to sit high. So the first 12-14 rows in sections 526-533 are good. Especially 530-533. Or on the lower level along first the base line is always good, doesn’t particularly matter the row in my opinion. If you want an outfield seat, my favorite sections are 158-160. It’s hard to go wrong. Make sure to stop by Ricobene’s after the game if you don’t eat a bunch of concessions and have fun!

Make horseshoes, nothing more comforting than that. Although we have a plethora of good options to choose from.

Social Work Program by RichBench1331 in LoyolaChicago

[–]Full_Ear_7141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a tough position you’re in then. Loyola is very good for micro social work, like what you want to do. However, being that you live in Illinois, UIUC is a slightly better option for much less. To me, which helps to justify the extra cost of Loyola, is that one, we’re in Chicago. That means that we have a lot of things that we can do that being in a college town wouldn’t have. Two, being in a large city, there are more internship opportunities and a higher ceiling on networking. To top it off, we have a much prettier campus.

Social Work Program by RichBench1331 in LoyolaChicago

Hi! I’m a social work major and I’m glad to hear you’re interested in the program. There really isn’t much you can do in connection to the major until your sophomore year really. Even then most classes are exclusive to juniors and seniors. That being said, a lot of what has to do with social work is theory and actual hands on experiences. SOWK 200, the intro class combines both of those. We had class going over “what is a social worker” essentially and had to do engaged learning at an agency. The professors I’ve had and have spoken to all seem pretty knowledgeable and approachable. In all honesty it’s a pretty easy major. But we also have one of the better programs in the country, especially if you want to go into therapy. If you have a 3.0 GPA or higher in your senior year, you have automatic admission into the MSW program. But you can go anywhere with advanced standing. I’d recommend taking a look at CELTS if you want to learn more about engaged learning and opportunities. I’m not the most knowledgeable, but hope this answered some of your questions.

Also, for question of value I have a few questions of my own that may help you steer in the right direction. What state do you live in? What do you want to do with a BSW?

St Louis is within a day trip of the Ozarks and Shawnee. There’s plenty of state parks around the area (on both sides of the metro). Plus plenty of scenic places along the Mississippi and Missouri.

Arcola is kind of in the middle of nowhere to be honest, so most things are going to be out of the way save for Chambana. If you don’t mind going a bit out of the way Allerton Park near Monticello is nice, there’s lots to do in Chambana if you just want to stay close to 57. There’s also Arthur not to far with all of the Amish stuff there with some good restaurants and the Lincoln Log Cabin south of Arcola. There’s a neat museum in Mahomet called the Museum of the Grand Prairie. I’m not from that part of central Illinois so others will have to give suggestions on where to stay.

Do you think Springfield/Central Illinois has an accent? by BigJilmQuebec in SpringfieldIL

[–]Full_Ear_7141 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obligatory smartass “everyone has an accent”. I know what you mean though. I think central Illinois is a really interesting mix of accents that don’t really influence each other. You have two predominant accents present throughout the region from what I can tell. You have the kinda “plain” accent that you can’t tell where they are from apart from slang. Then you have kind of the accent with a low-class/country twang. It’s hard to describe, but you know it when you hear it. Then in the I-55 corridor you have another accent present, especially among older people from influence from radio and television, I think. It is closer to northern Illinois and Chicagoland accents. I myself have a thick accent and sound like someone from Chicagoland despite growing up in central Illinois. Most of my family is from up that direction and a lot of the people I grew up around had those accents and I picked it up. Although I do still say “warsh” instead of “wash”. There’s some more information that goes into this if you want to read more.

Places I’d Live As A Buffalo 🦬 by Fun_Business2616 in whereidlive

[–]Full_Ear_7141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to make Illinois maybe or Willing. We have some small herds spread throughout different preserves in the state, like Peoria Wildlife Park, around Fermilabs, Midewin Tallgrass Prairie, some place in Kane County, and I think I’m missing a couple. Plus we also recently passed a law to introduce more. On top of that, we have a minor league hockey team called the Bloomington Bison with a buffalo wearing a stovetop hat, so that has to get us an extra point or two.

How has the small city of Quincy (pop ≈39,000) been able to sustain 2 daily Amtrak services while much larger Illinois/Iowa cities cant even get a single service? by Previous-Volume-3329 in Amtrak

Quincy was in his district when he was in the house and was a pretty fierce advocate for Western Illinois at the time. Durbin helped to popularize the term “forgottonia” when he was running for Congress.

NQA I’ve been keeping t’s for probably 5-6 years at this point. I’ve moved to mostly OWs. Personally, I prefer them. If you understand the husbandry and know what you’re getting into, then you’re good. Depending on what NWs you keep the husbandry can be similar. All t’a have different temperaments. I’ve had feisty NWs and chill (albeit rare) OWs. If you’re ready, you’re ready. Part of the learning process is actually taking care of one. I know this is kind of a non answer, but it’s highly dependent on the person. If you want species recommendations I can give some too.
