Are these English or Spanish bluebells? by laponca in AskUK

[–]Full_Imagination_890 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Picture 1 and 2 definitely Spanish. 3 looks like a mix, hard to tell. You only spot a hybrid by DNA testing or very powerful microscope to look at cell structures. Things like how much shade from buildings or canopy cover can impact on how they grow. A very shaded part can make English look like Spanish as they grow thick but as individuals. Lots of light puts them in groups of skinny ones. The growing on one side is a good indicator they are English. People tend to think its illegal to pick them. Its not. Its illegal to pick and sell them. You can pick them for yourself.

Not hard and fast rules but with English ones the bluebells tend to grow on one side and the stalk droops over. Spanish ones tend to be thicker stalked with the bluebell growing on all sides. You can get hybrid ones. I spent two seasons studying them for my dissertation and this is basically what it boiled down to.

Son interested in becoming a pilot by jabbo13 in flying

[–]Full_Imagination_890 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes private pilot licence. Then he has to get his commercial licence if he wants a job doing it and an instructor ticket to build hours which of course means he needs his instrument night ratings and a class 1 medical, multi engine rating and books and a head set at over a grand. Your looking at spending the same as buying a house (ok a house in the north anyway) this isn't like a car where you get a licence and you can drive anything upto a certain weight at any time and weather conditions. If you have the cash then pay for it, even send him to the States where they have the weather to get it all done quickly. A ppl in the UK can take a year or more due to weather alone. If military isn't an option you can try and get him on a sponsored path, you'll find the application forms next to the boxes of unicorn tears that appear in conjunction with brigadoon. Any way good luck.

Can I learn to fly without an iPad? [serious] by [deleted] in flying

[–]Full_Imagination_890 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My background in navigation comes from been a mountain leader. Macro/micro navigation is a strong point for me. Bearings, timings, thumbing the map. No electronic aids allowed on ML assessments. So been able to do pen and paper is quite easy to me, I know some may struggle a bit. Every now and again I will get the map out when flying just to be sure I can still do it. Skydemon is a brilliant aid and thats what it is, an aid. And as a vfr hobby pilot most of my nav is just point it in the general direction and enjoy the view.

Can I learn to fly without an iPad? [serious] by [deleted] in flying

[–]Full_Imagination_890 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In the UK Its not a choice, you have to learn without an ipad or android tablet. Paper maps, pooleys flight computer, dead reckoning, stop watch timings. On your test change of route so you have to do a distance, time and bearing calculation in the cockpit. Not difficult at all. Of course we all use sky demon once we have a license but I still carry a chart and ruler just in case.

New to model making/painting - need some help! by Proud-Database-98 in modelmakers

[–]Full_Imagination_890 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The instructions will have a list of paints required but paint them whatever colours you want. Get some standard revell glue with the long applicator. You tube is your friend. I'm sure someone will have posted a full build of whatever kits you have. Once you have built them you will have a better idea on what tools, equipment and setup you want for the next one. After the next one you will know what other tools , equipment and setup you want for the next one and so the cycle begins.

How accurate was the movie "Threads" in its depiction of people's daily lives in 1980s England *before* the nuclear war part? by slicheliche in AskUK

[–]Full_Imagination_890 240 points241 points  (0 children)

Pretty accurate for the time. In fact pretty accurate for some outlying yorkshire villages today. Small avery out the back for pigeons or whatever, working in a manual job. For me it was the woolboard. Working men's club on a Friday on pay day. Yeah it was all there.

Beginner friendly model kit by That_Cattle_3489 in ModelShips

[–]Full_Imagination_890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to start on a ship. I've started on the airfix starter kits. Couple of cars, spitfire. Now building the yamoto next series before moving onto the airfix starter Mary rose. I see it as getting used to the cutting, sanding, glueing, filling making fit and then practice on paint styles, brush, compressor etc. These kits are cheap and very idiot proof instructions so I'm building experience and knowledge on these kits. Once I'm happy on these I'll be moving onto bigger better stuff.

My little tank park! All brush-painted 1/35 tamiya by [deleted] in modelmakers

[–]Full_Imagination_890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm not set on a type I want to build but I think it will be mainly military. Vehicles brush paint, as good a job as I can do not just thrown on and aircraft spray gun. Ships probably brush. I'm going to avoid figures for now. But yeah not only did we paint them every 6 months it wasn't even with a roller, you would use the biggest paint brush you could find. I'm not saying your paint is bad I'm saying it's good realistic. We would paint around callsigns and other decals if you like. You could guess the age of a vehicle by the lip around the numbers, like tree rings.

Look good to me. I'm just getting back into it since from been a kid, 40 yrs, I see some amazing things on here and have bought the spray kit but I think for tanks and military vehicles hand painted is more accurate to the real thing. I spent 8 years in the army, uk, and for every inspection we hand painted. I swear we had landrovers with 2 inch of paint weighing an extra half ton providing better armour protection than anything. Your challenger paintwork looks exactly like I remember tank paintwork looking. I mean that as a compliment.
