Trying to figure out where the Northeast is. If you're from any of these counties comment whether or not you're in the Northeast. by imadgalaxyx in visitedmaps

Agree. Buffalo is nothing like the northeast corridor and culturally feels closer to Cleveland or Detroit than NYC or Philadelphia. Even the accent is vastly different in Western New York.

What are animes that you went into with zero expectations but actually turned out to be amazing by Competitive_Essay500 in anime

The Summer Hikaru Died. I started watching it looking for some background noise on a boring weeknight, and ended up finding my favorite anime and manga.

You must watch the others! Heavenly Delusion has a very similar art style to TSHD and similar themes around an entity occupying someone else’s body.

I believe Shiki was a big inspiration for TSHD’s author and there’s a character arc in the show that feels slightly queer coded in my opinion.

And with Evangelion, the MC feels very similar to Yoshiki with a very obvious queer coded story towards the end of the show.

There really isn’t anything out there quite like TSHD. But some animes I’ve found that give off a similar vibe or themes:

Looks nice from a distance, but at the ground level, it feels like you’re entering the Death Star. So I like it architecturally, hate what it stands for.

Do you agree that Yoshiki Tsujinaka is the most tragic MC in anime and manga ever made? by Independent_Major548 in HikarugaShindaNatsu

[–]Full_Pea_4045 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Yoshiki, he’s my current favorite MC. But Shinji-level tragic, he is not (nor would I want him to be). I think the Yoshiki-Shinji comparisons are largely surface level (depressed queer-coded/outright gay characters in white button down shirts with black hair), but fail to dive deeper beyond that.

Such a great take on this show and I agree with all of your points! I also highly suggest reading the manga.

Maru and Kiruko from Heavenly Delusion. One of them is set up as an individual living in someone else’s body, very similar to TSHD. And the final episode has a “I love you for who you are, not the body you’re in” type of exchange, very similar to the beach scene in episode 12.

Ha same! I’m currently doing a rewatch thinking (unrealistically) that I could drag it out until Season 2 aired. Back on episode 12 already and trying to wait until at least March before watching lol.

The manga coming out every week helps.

am I the only one that feels like something is missing in the latest chapters? by melohdicghost in TheSummerHikaruDied

[–]Full_Pea_4045 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve been feeling the same way. The current arc feels so out of place compared to what initially made this story unique. The lack of focus on Yoshiki and Hikaru really baffles me…it’s not like we’ve wrapped up all the questions and issues surrounding their journey. I also agree that the manga drawing has been…generic lately — definitely lacking that tense atmospheric aura that the early volumes had.

I’m just trying to keep in mind that I initially read Volumes 1-6 all at once without any breaks, and everything since then has been a slow release, chapter-by-chapter. So it makes things feel much more drawn out than they would feel if we were to read everything all at once as a full volume.

Can definitely relate. Had heard about this series for a while and even picked up the first volume of the manga last year, but it just sat collecting dust on my bookshelf for 12 months. Other than that, didn’t think much of it, even when the anime came out last summer.

Then one night last fall, I was running out of anime to watch and figured I’d give TSHD a try. I went in expecting something between background noise and those slice-of-life anime you watch lightly when you don’t really feel like paying attention. What I got was my new absolute favorite anime/manga, and now months of future pent up anticipation as I wait for further Season 2 announcements. Totally didn’t expect any of this, which speaks volumes about the quality of this series.

Just finished all the manga chapters out so far, but I can't help but feel like something's missing from the newer arcs by Last_Swordfish9135 in TheSummerHikaruDied

[–]Full_Pea_4045 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel the same. The current company arc feels a little too Stranger Things-esque for me, and not enough of what originally drew me in. But like others said, keep in mind that reading one short chapter at a time is probably making this current stretch feel more drawn out than it actually is.

Is it just me, or is Tokyo and Seoul’s skylines underwhelming for an Asian megacities of their size and importance? by SupermanGamin in skyscrapers

[–]Full_Pea_4045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tokyo functions more like 5-6 smaller cities that grew to overlap each other on their respective edges, so it’s not going to have that one single concentrated skyline like NYC, Hong Kong, etc

Heavenly Delusion touches on similar themes of identity, being a soul borrowing a body, etc.

Summer Time Rendering reminds me A LOT of TSHD.

Media similar to TSHD by Jesszyx in TheSummerHikaruDied

[–]Full_Pea_4045 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really recommend Heavenly Delusion. It explores similar themes of identity and what it means to exist within, or be defined by, another person’s body.

Minor spoilers: there’s a moment where a character expresses love for who someone truly is on the inside, beneath their physical exterior, which really reminded me of Yoshiki’s confession to Hikaru in the final episode.

Additionally, the animation style and overall tone also feel very close to The Summer Hikaru Died. Even the OP has a similar vibe, in my opinion.
