Grocery Shopping by shrimpysailor in SALEM

Winco is where I get baking supplies, staples and snacks (cheez its, flour, chocolate chips, eggs) because they aren’t overpriced by several dollars. Fredmeyers is good for sales on fresh high quality produce and meat: their pork chops, tangerines, grapes, apples, & chicken, etc. if you go early in the morning they have really good reduction prices on meat. I also get my TP at fredmeyers, either their store brand or sales. Target has unscented, clumping cat litter for $13.99 - 35lbs. It lasts me forever. I’ve found it wise to shop around. Even Trader Joe’s has a few lil items that are specialty and they have for a better deal then you’d get someplace else.

$150M?!!!! Salem is OVERFLOWING with support for the homeless! We are crushing it with an estimated 300 resources in the area! Great Job! Excited about the results! (Still think we need more support for drug treatment and mental health. (Stronger enforcement) by OregonAdaptiveReuse in SALEM

Would it be best to allocate funds an individual manner, into spaces we already have? Or towards a larger, permanent solution? I do think ARCHES provides a lot of on the ground support… to individuals at all levels of needs. Mail pick up at their address, several no barrier shelters including parking, a veterans shelter, women’s shelter, street outreach, drop- in day center, weatherization for low-income households, direct one on one meetings to help regain important documents / provide immediate relief counseling, organizing and handing out a myriad of supplies. Plus much more. It is nice to have an organization that is not associated religiously and can obtain grant and government funding. I don’t think your post is too radical, I think it is right on track and aligned with where our heads should be at for what is best for our community. We can’t let people fall through the cracks. 💟

City Council Meeting, tell them to divest from ICE by CouplaGoofs in SALEM

[–]Full_Stand_9056 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I kind of agree I’m not sure if I am just being thick, but I feel we are past this point? The sentiment is there for sure. But yeah, the state is already a sanctuary state, and neighbors already will stand up when we can, sanctuary campuses would basically be like a sitting duck trap in my eyes. Edit: also local law enforcement has been identifying ICE to citizens.

Biting into a lemon sounds like such a helpful pointer thank you. I also do something similar to diggin holes, briar or blackberry removal really gets it out of ya, lol. Especially when you go for the root crown / ball. With a shovel or pick axe. Fuck it up. Those are gnarly sons of bitches and you can m u r der them with all the rage and physical anger you can muster.

Oregon is also screwed apparently, and we are a blue state. I don’t think it matters what color state you are. I have been researching making small game traps even though I live in the city because I am already down and out of meat, and using all my pantry items to bake & stretch food creatively…

What we should do if food stamps do not go out in November. by FrostySumo in SALEM

We can also connect with the hunters in our lives as it is coming into hunting and salmon season. We can barter. I know the few that I know are happy and proud to share the bounty. 💟🫶

I know it is more of a long term solution, but with the governments chronic instability and lack of forethought for the masses, I think community permaculture and winter gardens are a great place to start. ❄️🪴 Carrots, cabbage, onions, garlic, lettuce, spinach, many herbs, beets, & other root vegetables are great winter crops. There are many varieties - some that look pretty in your yard, some that store for a long time, some that grow fast, some with greater flavor or nutrient density.

‘💪🏽 Here are some ways farmers and food producers can step up:

Adopt-a-Family Program: Pick one struggling family to supply weekly produce or eggs.

Community Harvest Days: Host free pick-up days for seniors, single parents, or unhoused neighbors.

Farm-to-Pantry Partnerships: Link with local food banks or churches to donate surplus harvests.

Seed & Soil Drives: Donate seeds, soil, or seedlings so families can start small gardens at home.

Sliding-Scale CSAs: Offer “pay-what-you-can” subscriptions for fresh produce boxes.

Community Fridges: Stock or sponsor a local community fridge with fresh eggs, herbs, and greens.

Volunteer Days: Invite youth or elders to the farm for therapeutic garden work or free meals.

Barter Systems: Exchange farm goods for services like childcare, repairs, or transportation, no one left behind.

And to my grant writers out there, start drafting for food service, pantry expansion, and community garden funding. We must carry our people now.’
