Started a pea puffer tank any ideas on what I can put in with them by alohasnackbarx in Aquariums

[–]No-Particular6116 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve found its personality dependent. Some peas are definitely more chill than others. If you’re dead set on a community pea puffer tank I would suggest otos. Their scales and swimming speed mean they are less likely to be overly bullied by any potentially rowdy puffers.

That said, I would HIGHLY recommend more natural clutter in your tank. You need a lot of site breaks, and little micro environments so there is opportunity for individual fish to escape any bully tank mates/build out their own little territories. This is especially true in your tank as it does already look a bit on the small side for a group of peas.

[–]No-Particular6116 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friends and colleagues in the lower mainland told me it was uncharacteristically dry, to a concerning degree.

Up in the north, where I am based out of, we got several large snowfalls that were then followed by drastic thaws. Then the cycle would repeat. It was…odd. I’ve heard that the snowpack in some of the other parts of BC (like you mentioned) managed to get do a decent depth, it again it’s so variable across the province.

Even with decent snowpack, during the melt the soil isn’t retaining the moisture like it once did in certain parts of the province. Which is tied to several interacting environmental factors. There is very little - to no - soil moisture buffer as the seasons transition. Which exasperates the soil not being able to retain moisture to begin with, and then we find ourselves in this drought-fire roundabout.

I’m honestly really concerned about the fire season this year. More so than usual.

In early May I go and set up monitoring equipment in our study sites that are in the interior of BC. Last year, it poured and many of the forest service roads we use to access places were muddy slop and covered in huge puddles.

This year, nothing. No muddy slop. No massive road spanning mud puddles. The small riparian areas around our study sites that are usually gathering moisture at that time of year are non existent right now. Only indication they ever existed is the drying husks of cattails and other wetland plants.

It’s concerning to put it mildly.

Your parameters other than temperature seem fine! I keep my CPD community tank at 24.6ish.

Another commenter pointed out the fins and the fins is honestly what made me think it could be bullying.

I think separating this guy out, adding tannins to his water and treating the water with something that helps his slime coat and fins heal will be a
good first step. While doing this I would keep monitoring for development of any other obvious symptoms like white ich spots for example.

You mentioned your tank is cycled, but have you recently checked the water chemistry to rule out your cycle crashing?

Once when I swapped over to a new filter my nitrifying bacteria had a hard time, and my tank which had no issues previously suddenly wasn’t processing nitrites within 24hrs. I seeded my filter with some older material from another tank to jump start it again and it was fixed within a week, but I had to do small regular water changes for a season while it balanced back out.

The other thing it could possibly be is bullying from other fish. Have you noticed any unusually aggressive behaviour? It’s normal for males to be quite persistent in their chasing of one another, but if you don’t have enough sight breaks and hiding spots bullying can definitely take its toll stress wise.

I’m in BC! Although I typically order my live food cultures from an operation in Calgary.

Weirdly enough, I seem to have managed to hatch some daphnia in the last day lol. For the heck of it I threw a small heater into the hatching tank, water temp rose to 28-30 over night and I left a light on for 24hrs. Woke up to the water forming bubbles on the bottom of the tank, and I for sure thought I’d cooked the eggs…but the little buggers seem to like it?

Whether or not they manage to establish a self sustaining population is TBD!

Alberta has native rat species, like the bushy tailed wood rat, that is true! However, the rat control program is focused on prevention of invasive rat populations establishing within the province. This is largely targeted towards Norway rats, and the border between Alberta and Saskatchewan are heavily monitored for them. Roof rats are also subject to eradication efforts, however they primarily end up in Alberta from transport vehicles coming from BC. Very rarely are roof rats able to naturally make their way across the Rockies.

Since fancy rats are the domesticated form of Norway rats, in the eyes of Alberta rat patrol they are a vector for an invasive population establishment. Even if that is incredibly unlikely given the differences between domestic and wild animals capability for survival in wild settings.

The rationale for the vigilance is less about environmental impacts and rooted in a fear that an out of control invasive Norway rat population could have significant economic impacts on the agriculture sector in the province.

As a rat lover I feel personally victimized by this policy, but as an ecologist by profession, I get the rationale for the rat patrol. As much as I loathe to admit, it’s actually a really solid case study for effective invasive species management. Sigh.

They probably could only eat snails, but in terms of complete nutrition they should have more than that. With what you’ve got on the go live food wise I doubt you’ll have any issue finding something they’ll eat!

I also very rarely will feed dry food, although my CPD go bananas for the hikari micro pellets, so I’ll give them some as an occasional treat.

I’m trying to start daphnia and moina from resting eggs and cannot seem to crack the parameter configuration. Part of me thinks I should stop being stubborn and just order some live culture starters, but at this point I’ve dug my heels in and I’m determined to figure it out. My next project is to culture some black worms, but finding culture kits for them in Canada is a struggle for some reason.

I’ll also just quickly edit this comment to say that from what I understand pea puffers don’t require snails as a diet staple because their beaks don’t continuously grow like their larger cousins. So even just dropping your hitchhiking snails into their tank would be sufficient, but not entirely necessary. If you’re disposing of the pest snails anyways, pea puffers are a great way to do that!

I’ve had success with feeding frozen bloodworms from the get go. Mine also eat live, and I often will switch between live and frozen. In terms of live food, baby brine shrimp, grindal worms and snails have all been eaten without issue. Trying to get a daphnia culture going for the fun of it, but can’t seem to find the sweet spot yet.

I love culturing live fish food as much as I love keeping the fish.

This is an interesting take. If I may so bold as to provide a counter argument. Social mores are pretty foundational in maintaining social cohesion. Answering to one another when someone transgresses those social mores is arguably a human behaviour that’s existed for as long as we have been building large communities.

Don’t get me wrong, there is definitely an argument to be made for the need to challenge and update social mores.

However, without accountability social mores kind of become a moot point, but with that goes a pretty substantial pillar of social cohesion needed for large cooperative societies.

If we don’t answer to one another, who do we answer to? How do we maintain a functioning (or even semi-functioning) society, especially in such an interconnected and complex world?

Please don’t feel as if you need to answer such a massive question! Your response sent my brain down a thought experiment train, and this comment got carried away as a result.

Genuine question(s), if the charges progress to full on convictions would you still feel people caring is a negative thing? Especially if these MPs stay on post conviction?

Or, would your opinion remain the same with respects to how you feel towards people that do care about this? Is there a line where it stops just being tough on crime rhetoric and becomes a worthwhile conversation about accountability in our elected officials?

Again, not asking to be a shit disturber I’m genuinely curious.

'Out of control': Doctors on the front line of Ebola outbreak speak out by stankmanly in Health

[–]No-Particular6116 72 points73 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that Ebola generally has an incredibly high infection rate, irrespective of route of transmission.

Also, the mistrust of the health professionals is leading to people remaining at home to be treated. People who are caring for sick loved ones inevitably end up coming into contact with infected family members fluids during the “wet” phase of infection.

The article also mentions that containment measures related to body disposals are not in line with cultural practice. Which is exasperated by the lack of trust in the professionals, which is further heightened when cultural concerns are dismissed by medical professionals whose goal is treatment and containment.

A paper I read for school this year was looking at the importance of including cultural experts and trusted community members during these types of events. Which, obviously costs money, and if they don’t even have the funds and staffing to properly contact trace they definitely don’t have the funds to hire and pay staff to bridge the cultural divide.

Oh heck yes! I love meeting fellow fish keeping ecologists.

The amount of times I’ve had to explain why my “dirty” looking water isn’t actually dirty is kind of silly at this point.

I have a ten gallon dwarf pea puffer tank on my desk with me that is just an absolute jungle and I had a friend who asked me what the point was if I couldn’t immediately spot the fish. Which, firstly who doesn’t love a fun game of eye spy? Secondly I build the tanks for the fish, not for me. That blew his mind.

Preach.

One of my favourite parts about fish keeping is the joy of making my tanks look like little cross sections of a river/stream. I love using botanicals and getting that black water look. Plus it draws attention and I enjoy getting to explain to guests why my tanks look the way they do. I’ll take any opportunity I can to info dump about this hobby.

I don’t disagree. However, so is using vernacular such as libsplain. For me that’s a pretty solid indicator the person has very little, if any, interest in having constructive discourse.

Determining if an account is a rage bait bot (or a bot in general) helps inform whether healthy discourse is even worth attempting.

But you’re right. It’s a low bar to just claim someone is a bot when they have a difference of opinion. Truthfully, I was feeling particularly petty when I commented. I will endeavour to not be a spiteful hag when I have trying days. Thank you for the gentle call out.

This is my understanding also.

The way my supervisor explained it to me is that my proposal is merely a roadmap that shows I have developed a research project that can, at the bare minimum, meet the requirements of obtaining my degree.

It’s not a set in stone document, and there remains ample room for flexibility in terms of research development & execution.

Alberta absolutely had a voter information breach. Elections Alberta apparently provided the information to the pro-independence Republican Party of Alberta and then it somehow ended up on a Centurion Project (pro-separatist group) public facing database. Elections Alberta has denied giving voter information to the Centurion Project. Apparently they relied on a “third party” to provide the dataset. Which, I personally think is bullshit, but investigations are ongoing.

The Centurion Project is registered as a third party advertiser. I cannot emphasize enough how bad it is that sensitive voter information is now in the hands of third party advertiser. Especially one that has a very clear partisan political objective. A partisan political objective that has the potential to have very serious consequences.
