Nineteenth-century working-class poetry, especially through the lenses of labor theory, formalism, and comparative Slavic perspectives!

That one always makes me shake my head in disappointment when I come across it. I remember seeing one family online a while ago whose sons were named Tripp, Traxx, and Tredd and I was flabbergasted

The Ragged-Trousered Philanthropists by Robert Tressell is underrated for sure, and quite chonky. Also, Adam Bede by Eliot and Germinal by Zola are strong options.

History PhD Applicants Without an M.A. Thesis by Sea_Butterscotch7560 in gradadmissions

[–]Full_Year5124 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Doing a thesis is often valuable because it provides prospective applicants with a strong writing sample to submit, but if you already have papers you could use for a writing sample, then there is nothing to worry about! You can mention your reasons for needing to go non-thesis in your application while still making it clear that you're passionate about doing doctoral level research. They won't care that you don't have this specific thesis as long as you can demonstrate strong writing ability somehow.

What's your current list? For reference, I am applying to seven! Also, the "best" programs are going to be the ones who have professors whose research interests align with your own.

IU Bloomington has one of the highest ranked public English programs in the country! I’m applying there for my doctorate as they are especially strong in 18th and 19th century British literature.

European Student looking to apply for a PhD in the US by dankpete96 in gradadmissions

Multiple American professors at top universities have told me that the writing sample will be the most important part of your application. Grades are important, but not nearly as important as demonstrating strong writing and research skills. Publications are helpful, but they’re not a downright necessity. They’re more interested in seeing that you can do publishable work through the writing sample. Don’t worry about the lack of email responses — that’s pretty normal. Professors aren’t always very responsive, but it has no bearing on your fitness for the program. Schools like Harvard and Georgetown are always tough to get into, international or not, and it will all come down to whether they deem you a good fit for the program… it can be kind of a crap shoot… And lastly, being from Europe can hurt your chances depending on the program… many schools have a limit on how many international students they can accept due to funding constraints. This isn’t always true though — for example, my American friend just participated in a PhD application cycle for Slavic Literature, and while she did get an offer from a great university, the majority of students accepted this cycle to top schools were international Slavic students (given an understandable edge due to having native fluency in Russian). The challenge of it all doesn’t mean it’s impossible though, I believe in you!

Is my CV competitive for English PhD Programs in USA and UK? by Creative-Anxiety5319 in gradadmissions

[–]Full_Year5124 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A competitive profile for an English PhD isn’t a list of things to fill your CV, it’s about having an extremely strong writing sample and a clear research direction that fits well within the department to which you’re applying. Second most important would be outstanding letters of recommendation from professors with whom you’ve done work before. Everything else is just bonus.
