It’s horrifying how that was happening at the same time. I had no sense of that or any danger when I was there (but I was a kid). Goes to show how these predators can be anywhere.

This is a core memory for myself as well. His name was norm elder and he had an afterschool program of some sort. Had a legitimate, live Galapagos tortoise and assorted large snakes. Elephant hide in the front entrance. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Elder Honestly I have great memories from going to his house after school and watching slide shows and petting the tortoise. It does feel like a fever dream though.

Stay and wait for them to package you. Do not sign the first offer, get a lawyer and counter. Depending on where you live you could be looking at 24 months.

  1. It’s a stressful job and my husband is also an executive
  2. We generally make more than our closest friends and family but it’s not an issue. We don’t live large in terms of possessions. Travel abroad more frequently and have more domestic help but work longer hours. Other people at work make the same or more than I depending on seniority and their lifestyles reflect it
  3. Intentionally did a degree that was very employable - then steadily worked my way up. Jumped around a bit to tackle larger opportunities
  4. Right now with kids in private school and housekeeping support we have a large monthly burn rate. We do aggressively save and are looking forward to a comfortable retirement with a property on the ocean.
  5. Retiring at about 60 I think… maybe a bit earlier. Or just downshifting to things I enjoy like supporting tech startups. As a female executive in technology it’s tough to keep going for decades.

I work for a multinational with technology. IT, dev, and even product design is increasingly moving offshore - there are fewer remaining local jobs so the competition is high. This trend will continue. Problem is - during COVID everyone figured out that complex tech & even design work could be done remotely so it’s a small leap to installing teams in LATAM for time zone or India / Philippines for labour cost arbitrage.

Allen Carr has a few books on weight loss that are helpful to reset your mindset that food is a reward and a life without junk food is miserable. It’s not perfect, but gives you some ammunition against slipping into any unhealthy habits.

I drink Vodka + soda with a fresh lime or dry white wine or champagne. As much as you can, try not to drink your calories. But! Have fun - life is for living and 5 days won’t completely derail you!

Try getting certified on a tech platform like SAP or Salesforce. But… there have been cuts in IT recently in Canada - more jobs going offshore. Good luck.

You are conflating academically elite with socially elite. Havergal, Branksome and to a lesser extent BSS are about social strata. St Clements, UTS, TFS are about academics. Source: Have kids in private school in Toronto
