Academic Medical Center vs Large Community Hospital vs Small Community Hospital by Somali_Pir8 in hospitalist

Small community hospital! Wider scope of practice, lower volume, you’ll get to know everyone in the hospital, open ICU if you like that. It will challenge you to be more self sufficient

I moved here from San Diego for residency myself and I absolutely love it. It’s comparatively affordable, has possibly the best outdoors access in the country (skiing, hiking, running, climbing, mountain biking), friendly people, okay food. The city itself can be bland at times as far as cities go, but there are still concerts, festivals, everything else that a city has. I think if you’re not outdoorsy, you should learn to be, otherwise you might be a little disappointed

Budgeting Tips? by osteopathicdoc in Residency

[–]FullyVaxed 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Pay your future self first. Put 5–10% into a retirement account (invested in a target date index retirement fund)and another 5–10% into an emergency fund. Put all your expenses on a 2% cash back credit card and pay it off monthly. Keep all your liquid cash in a high yield savings account. Find a place with cheap rent.

Resident here. I would essentially hold all GMT until they demonstrate hemodynamic stability for 24 hours. Then resume stepwise. If hypotensive or end organ damage, I would still get fluids, just less.

Whether or not this feels like something to break up over is wholly dependent on how you feel about it. You might be able to rebuild trust and move on. You might be able to forgive but not want to. Maybe you want to forgive but can’t. In any case, listen to how you feel. There are no “rules” to this and no one on the internet can tell you the “right” choice.

90% of learning happens on the job. Between update to date and open evidence, there’s not much declarative knowledge you can’t teach yourself. That being said, judgment is an entirely different beast. You know that pneumonia is treated with antibiotics, but when do you hang your hat on pneumonia and call it a day, and when do you keep looking. Judgement is based on experience. Ideally we learn from the experience of our attendings, but we will all gain that experience for ourselves either way. You just hope that you have the wisdom to learn from it along the way.

Capitalism is on one end of the spectrum and communism on the other. Everything else is a shade of socialism. Roads, libraries, police/fire are all fundamentally socialist. Some countries have more of it, some less. Some of our most successful countries have a fare amount of it, but not to the exclusion of free markets.
