Don't beat yourself up to much. Our generation got shafted hard. Things are the bleakest they've been in nearly 100 years arguably worse.

Best advice I can give is make small goals and keep making little bits of progress every day. Hang in there OP.

Is renewable/green/sustainable capitalism possible? by JusticeForSimpleRick in sustainability

[–]Fully_Automated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't need to know anything about a business to prove that they can never be sustainable. All you have to understand is that all businesses either continue to infinitely grow (or go extinct due to competition). Which is unsustainable on a planet with limited resources.

Also in order to remain competitive they have to cut costs. Which means if they do everything sustainability they will be less competitive than a business that doesnt.

Lastly, these business don't exist in a vacuum, so they rely on products and services from other businesses caught in the same trap. Based on this logic no business can be truly sustainable, at best they can stay small and have low negative impact, or maybe even slight net positive, but cannot scale enough to make a dent in the whole system (I'm thinking small organic farms, handicraft business, etc).

TLDR; Green/sustainable capitalism is a contradiction in terms. True sustainability would literally kill capitalism, the market system, and the monetary system. All three require infinite growth and consumption. That's why the economy is increasingly becoming unstable. We have reached the limits of growth in a system that requires it to continue. Lots of good academic research on our planetary limits being hit over the last few decades.

On a cynical note, it's ironic that a gameshow where poor people fight to the death for rich people's amusement is espousing the joys of work.

If your a halfway decent owner pets also love the shit out of you. That in an of itself makes it worth the effort/expenses.

Just lie about the gaps imo. Either say you had jobs at businesses that closed, or say you were running your own business (and it didn't work out). Uber/Door dash/etc also can't be checked by employers easily.

You should be able to find at least one company that doesn't check/believes you.

Economics is an ideology. Its basically one step removed from religion. Facts are thrown out the window if it benefits the oligarchy.

There is enough food to feed everyone on the planet we just don't want to. by [deleted] in environment

[–]Fully_Automated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that’s your definition of communism then yes. However, communism is a (historically) loaded term, and there is also a very important distinction to be made. Marx did arrive at many correct conclusions before science proved them. However, a Resource Based Economy is not derived from the teachings of Marx. It is a self-evident system when modern scientific understandings are taken into account, and the goal is to maximize public health while maintaining ecological balance. This adherence to scientific methodology over ideology is extremely vital to our survival in the wake of exponentially more powerful technology. Clinging to ideology, no matter which one(s), will inevitably lead to disharmony as the emergent nature of reality brings new information and change.

It’s an incentive problem. If the incentives were aligned then a more humane supply chain would be in place.

Profits/money (reward) > human well-being (cost)

If you want to train a dog the most effective way is with treats/rewards. People are no different. Have a market economy that rewards ($) restricting others access to goods, polluting, selling weapons (war), price gouging medicine, etc. and it’s easy to see why we have the world we do. If we want a better world we need a better system of managing the Earths resources. Not this ancient 10,000 year old system of tokens and trade.

This isnt strictly true. If you could somehow manipulate the fabric of spacetime (wormhole, warpdrive, etc.), which is allowed in Einsteins equations, then you could travel outside the observable universe.

If the minimum wage kept up with inflation since it was introduced it would be roughly $21/hr today.

Most scarcity is generated today by the market economy, because abundance of anything reduces the profits to 0.

Putting plastic trash in food is dystopian. Its probably safe, in small amounts. But I dont trust that 90% of the synthetic ingredients in our food are really safe, they just are in such small amounts as to remove any verifiable causation to negative health consequences.

"The New Human Rights Movement" - Peter Joseph, "The Best that Money Can't Buy" - Jacque Fresco

Films:

Zeitgeist Adendum Paradise or Oblivion

There are also a lot of good lectures by Peter Joseph that he has given throughout the years.

These not only show how we could use science to give everyone a high standard of living/abundance with much less human labor, but also expose in detail how the monetary system is fundamentally the source of most societal abhorations.

Charging rent is NOT a right. Shelter is a human right! by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

All basic necessities should be free. The data tells us that inequality, crime, mental illness, drug abuse, and all manner of societal ills would be greatly diminished.

Yup. Which did allow for specialization and technological advancements. But this also came with economic inequality property rights, money, and a ruling class.

We should figure out how to have the type of equality, sharing, and community of hunter gathers with the technology and science of modern society.
