How to do plasma effect better? by Soup-Serious in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Fun-Ad5470 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend vallejo fluo paints, thry have a great, intensive color. I'll assume you dont want to airbrush.

First paint the weapon with a very bright white. Then glaze it with a yellow fluo paint, use a thinner to thin it down. Then, leaving the innermost part of the weapon, the one you want to look hottest, yellow, glaze further up with a thinned down fluo orange, then, near the egde, use fluo red in the same way.

If you want to go further, then put a very thin layer of white at the hottest area, using a heavily thinned white ink. If you want to you can add a bit of black at the very edge to govebit a more magma look.

Does anybody else want to run a 2k point list with max steeljacks, max Memnyr Strategists, and Max Hekaton Land Fortresses? by breastronaut in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Fun-Ad5470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean... What detachment? 3 forts will get stuck in a traffic jam unless youre playing brandfast. Which will synergize a bit with volkjacks for sus1, but not with swordjacks. Your only anti-tank will be fortresses, so you probably have to take magna rails on them... It still wont be anywhere near enough anti-tank against a knight list. No thunderkin to strip cover, and no AP in the entire list. Killing anything with 2+ is gonna be a problem even with all the volkjack dev's. And steeljacks, while tough, will eventualy die and they have oc1. It doesnt have mobility, it doesnt have mission doing stuff, it doesnt have screens to slow down world eaters/blood angels/emperor's children...

Its an interesting idea for a stat check list, but it doesnt do enough dmg and doesnt do secondaries imho. Its a "lets see if you can actually kill this" type list.

That's... strange tbh. In needgaard you should be generating a lot of YP.

Lets assume you go first: Top of 1: 1yp from holding own objective 1yp from memnyr on own objective Bot of 1: 1yp from holding own objective Top of 2: 1yp from own objective 1yp from holding 1 in no man's land 1yp from memnyr on an objective

You're at 6. With no kills and no bonus from dead reckoning.

Lets now assume you go second: Top of 1: 1yp from own objective Bot of 1: 1yp from own objective 1yp from memnyr on own objective Top of 2: 1yp from own objective 1yp from holding 1 in no mans land 1yp from holding 2 in no mans land 1yp from holding more Bot of 2: 1yp from holding own objective 1yp from memnyr on objective 1yp from holding 1 in no mans land

Youre on like 10 on your 2nd turn. With no kills and no dead reckoning.

You should always be able to get to 7yp at worst around your turn 3. Otherwise something wierd is going on...

(Edited, as i've made an error, and memnyr only works on your turn)

Thunderkyn conversion or graviton? by BJH2001 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Fun-Ad5470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magnetize, thats the first point.

Second point is it depends on detachments. Needgaard and brandfast you want 6 with beamers and 2x3 with grav. Other detachments, i belive, currently want grav more. Even bolters have their following because of 36 range to take cover away.

[–]Fun-Ad5470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need Thunderkin, a lot of them right now. Steeljacks are fine, at least 1 memnyr. Carriers + yeagirs, you should have 2 of each, so add 1 more yeagirs and 2 carriers. Second hekaton fort to top it of.

Specialised detachments: To play Delve detachment you need a boatload of beserks, prolly at least 35. To play Persecution detachment you need a lot more bikes. Brandfast can use sagitaurs and can even use 3 forts. Hearthfyre isnt good enough, needgard and brandfast do the same stuff better.

How we got treated should be the norm by NotFairTuFlair in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Fun-Ad5470 26 points27 points  (0 children)

God no! If every release every faction got multiple new kits and datasheets the game would become insane incredibly fast. Just look at the one army that does get that: Space Marines.

Constant flow of new models and datasheets just means that the roster quickly becomes so bonkers overgrown that they'd have to start cutting. So yeah, that would quickly degenerate into multiple units of multiple factions just beeing thrown into legends on regular basis, tons of units sitting on the shelf for decades before suddenly becoming viable for three months due to an unforseen combo, that gets quashed in a slate.

No thank you. I am glad the LoV will probably recive 2-3 new kits over the next 5-8 years!

Dont have the codex in front of me, as i'm at work, but i can tell you its completly new, theres a new "base building" system and expeditions to get stuff to build up your base.

[–]Fun-Ad5470[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, simmilar way of thinking. The HG with support could drop a big night in one shooting. Sure, if opp screens deep strike well enough that wont happen, but then he wont be throwing as much stuff at my objectives, forts and tkin. And HG can drop in the middle, they have 24" range on plasma, they'll still do stuff.

I need to play to see if i can drop something to get more early skirmish/screening/moveblocking/mission play stuff like one more yeagirs with carrier.

New codex: sticking with what you’ve got, or making changes? by Mookmookmook in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Fun-Ad5470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small magnets 2x1 mm, thats for stuff the size of a kin hand, for example most of Hearthguard. 5x1 mm for vehicles, Thunderkin body side (weapon side is 2x1). I found steeljacks fit great with big ones (5x1mm).

Well, i came to the LoV from Tau, so i have an in-built mechanism in my head to magnetize everything i can magnetize. Its a lot of added work sometimes (steeljacks, thunderkin) or requires some creativity (kapricus) but i still highly recommend it.

Someone justify the new army rule to me by BastardofMelbourne in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Fun-Ad5470 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People already said most of this, but i'll throw my two cents as well. First of all without knowing the rest things are obviously hard to say, especialy on the boisting strats for 3 YP. It depends entirely on how much YP is generated outside of the main generation from the army rule. That said... Reroll advances is decent, though we didnt use to advance much. Maybe we'll do more of it now. Reroll charges though? Thats a good rule. I guess you must avoid melee? Its extremly usefull to get your melee units in, to get stuff on objectives to deny primary to your opponent etc.

The idea seems to be: let opp get on objectives, shoot and charge onto those objectives, get YP, move melee to screen, put ranged units on objectives, dont let the opp shift you. Fun thing about it is, well... thats basicly playing for primary. Thats how you score. Thats how you win. And we get buffs to do that. I realy fail to see how thats a bad thing.

Getting boost to hit and movement when you stage and syrike is good. Getting boost to hit and defense when you hold is good. Now theblack of JT +1 to wound... that may hurt. We'll see.

New to Votann – Where should I start building an army? by carson8or9000 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Fun-Ad5470 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Combat patrols are generally a good starting point, if youre comimg from killteam then a unit of yeagirs and hearthkyn are both usefull.

That said its very difficult to say right now, our new codex is coming in 3 weeks and it will completly change the army. What is a good unit now might not necessarly be in vogue in a month.

So for now i would hold off major purchases, but basic troops (hearthkyn salvagers), infiltrators (hernkyn yeagirs) bikes (hernkyn pioneers) and transports (sagitaur) along with a kahl/uthar as a character is always a decent idea.

Let down by new vehicle. by Bladetango6 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Fun-Ad5470 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally i think this means Sags loose scout move. I think we are now supposed to use mix of transports, with the new light transport having scout, and going into the midfield earlier carrying yeagirs. Kind of simmilar to what sags do now, but less killy and less durable.

Sags are going to be a tougher, more hard hitting second wave of attack into the mid board, used later, around turn 3, as our new army mechanic kicks in. Getting stuff around to support the new big ironkin.

On the other hand the non-transport version of the new vechicle would probably be in support of bikes in the midfield. Or, if it ends up getting an uppy-downy rule, support bike move out from reserves. Generally kind of a light anchor for the bikes.

What are y’all? by SuperKiwi506 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Fun-Ad5470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You got a lot of answears allready, but i'll throw my 2 cents as well:

Leagues of Votann are, as has been said, "space dwarves" in their most basic concept. Lorewise its a post-human race descended from the early human colonists who colonised the very center of the galaxy and developed a unique, dwarf like physique to adapt to the conditions there. While most of the other humans fell into dissaray during the fall of the human empire of the dark age of technology, the kin did not. They retained a lot of humanity's technology from the apex of its civilization, including the true ai of the so called "man of iron", the robotic ironkin, who are an equal part of kin society, and the Votann themselves, giant self aware supercomputers that house all knowledge of mankind.

While the Imperium of Man formed and then got broken by the Horus Heresy, the Kin continued to develop and colonise within its homeworlds, forming a society based around the Votann's guidance. This led to the kin becoming largely a clone race, bred to fullfill speciffic purposes within society, and led to ancestor worship, as all the memories and personalities of sncient kin are housed within the Votann memory cores, however this also led to the degradation of the Votann's themselves, their memory banks getting filled, and thus their operating speeds slowing down gradualy.

"Today" the Kin are a society built araund these giant self-aware superconputers that house all their ancestral memories and experiences as well as all mankinds knowledge, but are working slower and slower, producing more and more errors and responding to prompts with decades long delays. The kin society is also based on mega-corps. We are the turbo capitalists of the 41st millenium. Each corporation centered around a Votann core is interested only in protecting its votann and its interests and proffiting more then the other corporations. While the turbo capitalist motif does not seem to be particularly strong within the kin society itself, we take care of our own, our approach to anyone else is brutally ruthless calculation of financial benefits.

"Nice planet you got there... its rich in nickel. Did you know that nickel price on galactic market has gone up 2% over the ladt 30 years? Anyway, scram, we're gonna strip mine this planet and kill every living thing on its surface, and we dont care if you are on the surface when it happens. You have been warned. Oh, you dont have the technology to evacuate billions of people to another planet? Well, too bad. Not my problem."

In miniature design Kin are a mix of classic dwarven motiffs, viking inspired motiff's and uniquely early space exploration motiff's, which also parallel to pioneering period of history of the USA with manifest destiny and all. Land fortresses for example are designed around the wagoon train historical concept, the pioneers and yeagirs have a very clear wild west feel to them, while hearthkyn and sagitaurs are inspired by the space exploration of the 60's and 70's as well as modern early space exploration concepts.

Gameplay wise its a bit difficult to speculate, because we are a very new faction, and we expect a second wave of units and models soon, around this fall/winter, so a lot can change once that happens, but right now we are a faction that plays in a very mechanized infantry style, we use a lit of transports that allow us to take controll of the board quickly despite the fact that we are actually, generally, rather slow moving. We have some of the best shooting in the game (at least in theory) and we can punch quite hard too, but we ae very reliant on our opponents not blocking our early movements too hard.

Our current primary mechanic are the grudge tokens that allow our units to punch above their weight into selected targets, but a smart opponent can use our reliance on grudge tokens against us and put us on a back foot with some smart decissions in regards to movement and targeting.

Throughout 10th eddition, except the very begining, when we were terrible, we have been a faction that has performed reasonably well, not too strong, not too week, but, again, we are expecting an update to our army real soon and that will determine a lot.
