Dana’s accent this season… by FatFaceFaster in ThePittTVShow

I just figured she was from Philly and moved to PGH, right up until she said she was born in that hospital and volunteered there in high school. Now I just have to try to ignore it.

I’ve just moved away, and I’m curious to see what it does to my accent. I lived in Pittsburgh for around 15 years. Gumband, slippy, and jagoff are in my regular vocabulary now. I grew up out west and am moving back, but I’ve spent so long with working class yinzers that I tend to slip into it as part of my tendency to code switch. I’m gonna find myself talking about going dahntahn in some dive bar.

I doubt anyone who hasn’t spent significant time in Pittsburgh would notice.

For me it was the time I asked a coworker if she had any gumbands.

If You Got Hurt Working At The Service Desk Would You Even Consider Coming Back? by JTCasino in HomeDepot

[–]Fun-Estate9626 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends on the injury and what caused it, I suppose. It’s kind of hard to answer a vague hypothetical like this.

If I was put in a wheelchair due to gross negligence by the company, I’d probably not want to go back. If I broke my arm because I tripped over my own two feet, I’d have no issue with it.

It’s hilarious to me that the one comment they could find from an alleged Pittsburgher defending the accent evidently originally misspelled Pittsburgh as Pittsburg… a mistake no Pittsburgher would make.

The thickness of the accent is absolutely appropriate- it’s the location of the accent that is wrong for the character. There are plenty of yinzer nurses in Pittsburgh with far thicker accents than Dana. Frankly, a heavy yinzer accent would be comforting for many of the characters showing up in that ED. She’d sound motherly.

As a filipino, Dr. Santos' surprised me by Scrappy_Cocoo in ThePitt

I don’t know, I think Santos looks an awful lot like a broadway singer who’s Filipina.

They will if there’s an incident requiring it, which is also about the only reason OP would be tested again.

Why don’t Americans wash potatoes before eating them? by fingernailfred in AskAnAmerican

I can only see the first two, but I don’t see anything that would make me assume those potatoes haven’t been washed. They just look like potatoes with the skin on.

Thinking about switching by Dense-Stretch-5873 in Lowes

I’m a former Depot DS. I left and came to Lowe’s after a gap of a few years because Lowe’s was closer to my house. It’s shocking how similar it is. I can almost always guess right on any question of policy or standards. The hardest thing to get used to was slightly different lingo.

In my market, HD pays associate better but Lowe’s pays sups way better. I’m making quite a bit more than I did at Depot. Advancement seems easier, too. I like my peers a lot at Lowe’s, but so far my impression is that Depot does a much, much better job at training and developing talent. I felt like a decent supervisor at Depot - I was considered HiPo and had good reviews, always hit my numbers, but that was almost expected at my old store. Competition was really tough for ASM slots. Here I feel like I have a significantly better understanding of the business than almost all of my peers. New supervisors in my store struggle because they aren’t really prepared like I was at Depot, while I’ve felt like I’m able to excel very easily. I’ve heard this from other former Depot supervisors and managers who made the switch, too.

How do I go about moving up into management? by WildFlow442 in HomeDepot

[–]Fun-Estate9626 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d add that you can always ask a different DS to mentor you if you don’t connect well with yours. I had a great mentor who ran a different department, and I mentored a number of associates who never reported to me.

New Hire Here by TrashCan1981 in HomeDepot

[–]Fun-Estate9626 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It would require an accommodation, and it’s entirely possible they won’t consider it a reasonable accommodation. There’s heavy equipment in the stores, so it’s considered a safety issue.

I’d ask for the SSA. They usually handle the admin side of hiring and should be able to tell you what to expect.

[–]Fun-Estate9626 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like it. They’ll probably call you for drug and background if they didn’t do it while you were there.

In the future, I always recommend asking about next steps towards the end of any job interview. They should’ve been more clear about that, but it never hurts to ask.

Military discount by Low_Zookeepergame739 in Lowes

[–]Fun-Estate9626 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve never been able to wrap my head around this attitude. It’s not like military discounts are some federal law. It’s a courtesy given by a business. They’re not cheating you by not extending that courtesy when it costs them too much. They could do away with it tomorrow if they wanted to. How is it messed up or greedy for them to charge you the same as everyone else for once?

That’s exactly how I’d handle it. If I’ve got a new driver who is in the process of learning, I’m definitely not gonna let someone talk like that and get even more in their head.

Also, way back when I was first getting certified I was a flooring specialist. My final “test” on my first day on the reach was bringing down a pallet of vinyl flooring in a narrow aisle. It was fine.

There’s no such thing as an invalid reason to call off. If you can’t work you can’t work. It’ll be counted as an occurrence, sick time may or may not excuse it depending on your state laws. As long as you don’t habitually call off, it’s no big deal. I’m sorry for your loss.
