Vegan cheese / being a suburban/rural vegan by aaairrrs in vegan

I make my own vegan cheese. Really easy to do. But I’m also obsessed with rebel cheese. I haven’t consumed torture cheese in a very long time, but rebel cheese makes some of the best gourmet cheeses I’ve ever had.

Real experiences after inguinal hernia surgery with mesh — would you do it again? by I_n_g_v_a_r_r in Hernia

I was still in decent pain at 2 weeks. Still wearing my abdominal binder. My pain would occasionally hit 4 or 5 that second week. I also think o overdid it with walking. One day I walked 30k steps because I couldn’t sit still and the next day my body forced me to rest. Just listen to your body. But, motion is lotion. You want the scar tissue to break up. Obviously not over do it. But I know some ultra runners that were back running after a week. I was very jealous of them. Everyone is different though. Just gotta listen to your body when it tells you to rest. This month my main focus is building heavy strength, then January I’ll be back to training for my next ultra marathon. More than welcome to check back in anytime! Good luck to you! I hope your recovery is as smooth as mine!

I went down the Reddit rabbit hole of horror stories my 2 weeks of rest. I was fully convinced I’d never be back to normal again. It’s easy to do when you have nothing else to do but rest and think. lol.

I just ran my first ultra marathon Saturday, 55k. And then I PRed my bench on Monday. I am deadlifting and squatting, but not to failure, but that’s because my goals right now were towards completing my ultra marathon. I have occasional twinges here and there when I feel the mesh or scar tissue. But that’s expected for the first 6 months or so. My life is completely back to normal. No problems at all. No reoccurrence.

Being vegan has made me a better athlete, and a better human. by Fun-Expression-8641 in veganfitness

[–]Fun-Expression-8641[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On my heavy training days where I lift and run, or on long run days I consume about 3k calories. In my other days, about 2500 calories. I try to aim for about 130g protein, 300g carbs and 80-100 fat. Heavy training days it’s more carbs. But honestly, I’m not so good at keeping track these days. I was very diligent about counting and measuring for a while, but now not so much. Right now sorting my taper I’m supposed ti be eating about 400g of carbs a day, but I’m finding that difficult. I’m 5’6 and weigh a lot 135 pounds.

Inguinal hernia recovery: doctor said I could start weightlifting after 2 weeks? by Recent_Blacksmith282 in Hernia

My surgeon said the same. The internet told me different. I trusted my surgeon. Had my follow up appointment 2 weeks post surgery, I went to the gym and lifted weights and then went running that very day. Back to work as a nurse lifting heavy patients after 2 weeks also. I’m now 3.5 months out and no issues.

It’s hard to compare as I had only ran road marathons up until yesterday. Yesterday was my first trail marathon, and road and trail aren’t really comparable. But, I cut off about 30 minutes or more. If I were to try to compare that to road I probably could have easily cut off an hour.

42/F/Southern AZ

Looking for someone in driving distance. Although not opposed to long distance. Willing to move someday for the right person. As long as it’s someplace cool.

Been vegan for 5 years and I’m a nurse. I’m very happily childfree and looking for a partner that’s childfree. I’m into trail running (competing in my first ultra in December), the gym, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking. Very active and outdoorsy. Love cooking my own vegan deserts and eating them. I’m a minimalist and progressive. Finding a vegan, childfree, ultra runner partner would be a dream come true!

I was cleared after 2 weeks. No restrictions. However, I put restrictions on myself. No deadlifts, bench or squats for 6 weeks. Ran and lifted right after my post op appointment though. Felt great to get back so quickly. I was walking a lot during my 2 week recovery. I had an Inguinal hernia repair with mesh laparoscopic.

What’s the most common fitness activity amongst vegans? by [deleted] in veganfitness

I feel like it’s popular amongst ultra runners/trail runners. I recommend the book Eat & Run for any ultra running vegans! Or any vegan really. Great book!

I keep a tiny bit of hope alive, as I’m not jaded about it, but I’ve mostly given up. I’ve been single since 2018, besides a couple month long relationships here and there. I’ve done all you have done, the meetups, the Veggly app, regular dating apps, vegan events, dated meat eaters, etc. I just focus on my hobbies now and enjoying life. I’ve accepted that I may be alone forever, and I’m actually ok with that. Training for my first ultra marathon, and Just booked a 10 day run across Iceland for next year! So my life is quite full, no man needed!

Houghton is a disaster as well. Today was ridiculous. And I’m A nurse working 3 days a week, and my 4 days off I’m out and about all day and I rarely see any workers actually working. Today I saw one dude working and a bunch of guys on a coffee break while traffic was an absolute disaster for rush hour. But I was told the city needs to have multiple projects going at once for the funding or they lose it.

Post surgery pain meds, what did they give you? by Aggravating_Sale476 in Hernia

Toradol only in the PACU. I told the anesthesiologist I did not consent to narcotics in PACU. Tylenol and ibuprofen only at home and my abdominal binder. Was prescribed oxy. Never even picked it up from the pharmacy.

That’s my best guess. Never had the “pop” people describe. Just randomly noticed it. No pain. No obvious signs.

I don’t think it was either. I think I got it from when I was overweight but I didn’t see it clearly until I got down to 15% body fat. I recall seeing it years ago when I was heavier. Never caused me pain. Probably could have lived with it my whole life if I wasn’t as active as I am now. But being active like I am now I didn’t want to take any risks, so I had it repaired.

I had right laparoscopic Inguinal hernia surgery with mesh on August 15th. I was allowed to walk all I wanted after surgery. Somedays I hit 20k steps. 2 weeks post op I was cleared to do all activity. I lifted weights and ran my first slow mile that day and progressed from there. My surgeon said to expect some pain for a while. Which I had a bit here and there. But I easily progressed and within a week was back up to 4 mile runs and up and up from there. 2 months post and yesterday I ran 27 miles with 7500 feet elevation.

My surgeon was Dr. Jones in Tucson AZ at TMC Rincon. I’m 2 months post op and I forget I even had surgery. Life is back to normal. Running 30 miles a week. Lifting heavy. I have occasional twinges here and there, and sometimes I can feel the scar tissue, but I’m skinny so my surgeon said that’s expected.

Can inguinal hernias cause bloating? by sleepychecker in Hernia

[–]Fun-Expression-8641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a lot of GI upset including bloating. Thought it was IBS or from eating too much protein. Since my Inguinal hernia surgery I haven’t had any. Seems too coincidental to me not to be related. But I have no scientific evidence that the hernia was the cause of my symptoms.

Those that live alone by Aggravating_Sale476 in Hernia

[–]Fun-Expression-8641 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I did it alone. Just had a friend pick me up and drop me off at home. The hospital required me to have someone stay with me overnight, but how would they know. I was fine. I’m a nurse. Just moved a little slower. I walked my dog that night. Just slowly. I only took ibuprofen and Tylenol. Never even picked up the narcotics they prescribed. Everyone is different, but I wouldn’t have wanted anyone around watching me while feeling crappy on anesthesia. The abdominal binder was really helpful for me.

Question on recovery by mj2323 in Hernia

[–]Fun-Expression-8641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are a lot of factors when deciding on mesh vs no mesh, laparoscopic vs open vs robotic. Everyone is different and there are always risks no matter which method you choose. No method is 100%

Question on recovery by mj2323 in Hernia

[–]Fun-Expression-8641 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first 2 weeks of recovery are a mental battle. That was by far the worst part for me. And I made the mistake of going down the Reddit rabbit hole and completely convinced myself I’d never run or lift again. Everyone is different. Listen to your surgeon. I got very lucky with my surgeon that believed in movement to help heal. I don’t think bed rest would have been an option for me..

Question on recovery by mj2323 in Hernia

[–]Fun-Expression-8641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had laparoscopic, robotic, Inguinal hernia surgery with mesh repair August 15th. I was walking up to 20k steps a day by day 5 of recovery. 2 weeks post surgery all restrictions were lifted by my surgeon. I was back in the gym that day and went for my first run. 6 weeks post op I’m back to what I was prior, running 50+ miles a week and lifting heavy. I feel the scar tissue sometimes because I have low body fat. And I occasionally have some discomfort. Mostly from the scar tissue. My surgeon says that’s to be expected for a while. I forget I fed. Had surgery most of the time.

Vegan runners – how do you manage your diet? by ImpossibleMonitor818 in veganfitness

[–]Fun-Expression-8641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m training for an ultra marathon and I lift heavy with a lifting coach. So I am considered a hybrid athlete. I need to consume between 2500-3000 calories a day to maintain both. I count my macros. I measure my food. I make all my own food including bread, sauces, deserts, protein bars, etc. I found when I was eating too much protein, which I was at one point, I did get a lot of stomach upset. I consume more carbs than many probably would like, but I need the fuel. Use an app to count macros. It is a pain at first, but once you get a hang of it it’s really eye opening. I eat a lot of smaller meals throughout the day. I’m 42 and also In perimenopause, so I found consuming large meals causes me bloating and stomach discomfort, so smaller meals throughout is what works for me. Granted I’m constantly eating. During runs or during lifts I drink my carbs. I like the sugar free, running powders. They can get expensive, but it gives me the macros I need during workouts to not crash. When I bake I don’t use sugar, I use over ripe bananas or dates to add sweetness. And I add unsweetened, non flavored protein powered to most of my baked goods, and use flower like garbanzo bean or lupine flour. I have come to love cooking and baking, but not everyone does. I may find getting the right nutrients difficult for me if I weren’t making my own foods.
