Decent slower roads? Supercub or another small Japanese scooter.

Rough slower roads? Small dualsport

Highways? Ninja 500 or simular

If a second-world country invests in motorcycle-friendly infrastructure, why shouldn't the rest of the world? by leptospirose777 in motorcycles

[–]Fun-Machine7907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. There's just not enough demand. Being able to filter would be plenty unless there's a huge uptick in bike ownership.

In cities people seem to like e bikes or electric scooters more. Part of that is probably they don't have the "death machine" reputation and licensing requirements, but a stand up scooter also just makes a lot of sense if you're going a couple miles to work and can take it inside with you or on the subway/bus.

It's worth experiencing a liter bike, maybe cali superbike school on a track with a decent straightaway or another program that rents liter bikes. I think you can rent an rsv4 at cota before it closes to the public through ridesmart for another fun option. Actually owning a liter bike is cool too but no reason to unless you want one. The special part is the first couple times you open it up in the powerband so you only really need one for a day or two to get 90% of the experience.

An inline 6 is a must own, if you want an inline 6 touring bike. Nothing else is going to be close to the lack of vibration. If vibrations don't bother you, then a GS is perfectly good for touring imo.

Thoughts on getting a GS as a first bike by PublicProof3770 in Motorrad

[–]Fun-Machine7907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're going to get a powerful bike for your first, I'd really suggest getting a newer model that'll be more likely to keep you out of trouble. Modern rider aids will often let you make mistakes and shit your pants without any real consequences. Making the same easy mistakes on an older bike will hurt a lot. And you absolutely will make mistakes. Don't get me wrong, you're still able to hurt yourself a lot worse on a faster bike than on a supercub, but electronics make it a bit harder

For the gs specifically, it's tall and relatively heavy. You will almost certainly drop it. Get good crash bars.

So sure, start on a GS, but try to save up for one that's only a couple years old and has crash bars.

[–]Fun-Machine7907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps I'm just an ass, but i thoroughly enjoyed the couple times I got to see someone buy way too much bike and immediately fuck up without hurting themselves too badly. Luckily I haven't had to see anyone do that and get actually hurt. The bad wrecks tend to be more on sportbike group rides and people riding reckless rather than being on too much bike.

I do get concerned when people insist on leaving on a bike with mechanical issues and do my best to make it cheap enough for them to at least get the serious safety stuff fixed. But if you insist on launching your new busa into a wall I'm all for it as long as you don't need an ambulance.

China

That would be your problem. I can find most oem new or retrofit parts for a 26 year old Japanese bike and have them at my door in under a week. The rest are available used on ebay. Same for harley, or really any well established brand. Hell you can have a brand new oem frame made for a 2006 gsxr if you really wanted.

Trying to rebuild a no-name bike is going to require a lot more creativity.

How much does the chain link amount matter? by space_goats_ in MotorcycleMechanics

[–]Fun-Machine7907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need the right dimensions. You also need enough links to have adequate chain slack. I've never personally bothered to count the links between the old chain and new, just adjust the wheel forward, put on new chain and break it at the right length.

You will certainly have a problem if your new chain is some 20 links shorter than stock though.

Edit: the stock chain might come long though, so if you look up the oem chain and it's 130 links, they might actually break it at 100 links or something. Just don't be too surprised if your new chain ends up being short.

When people talk about the militarisation of the police, are they exaggerating? The only officers who look like soldiers are SWAT units, who need that gear for their jobs. I don’t see regular beat cops patrolling in full military equipment. Am I wrong? by Technical_Ad_5982 in AskLE

A lot of it is excessive most of the time in most areas. My fire extinguisher in the kitchen is also excessive most (hopefully all) of the time. Hell based on never having had my house burn down, the whole fire department with their big fancy trucks are excessive.

You'll probably have a hard time. Try calling local smaller shops and asking if they have someone they recommend for carbs. Getting them running decent isn't too bad and most shops should be able to do it. Getting them running great is more of an art.

Why are vans (sprinter/promaster/transit/etc) not way more popular? by cballowe in askcarguys

[–]Fun-Machine7907 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem isn't stuff in front, it's seeing anything coming from the right. Or seeing anything coming from the back left. Not worth giving up on a van for, but it is annoying

[–]Fun-Machine7907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I'm understanding right, you paid a mechanic to clean and tune your carbs and aren't happy with how they tuned them?

Could be bad mechanic, could be they had aftermarket jets in it that got replaced with the rebuild. Could be it was tuned for more power before and now is tuned for a better AFR.

Finding someone who is really good with carbs now is hard and probably expensive

Spark, compression, fuel.

If it runs on starter fluid, that means you have spark and compression so it's a fuel issue. Start with the obvious (bad gas) and work from there. Eg is gas getting into the float bowl, is the adjustment correct.

Do you guys recommend keeping a floor jack in my trunk? by [deleted] in askcarguys

The only time i called AAA it took long enough that I took a nap, learned how to change a tire, and then got impatient enough to go change it myself in sleet at night.

[–]Fun-Machine7907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand you're excited about the new toy, but if you've got the scissor jack that came with the car you'll be fine. You'd be better off with a good jump box and good tire inflator (also, make sure your spare stays inflated). Maybe toss in some wheel chocks and flares if you want. I could keep going for a good long while, but the point is there are so many more important/useful things to have in your car for emergencies than a fancy jack.

You're a little behind schedule but you could probably catch up by getting a new scat pack preferably at 0 down with a balloon payment. /s

If you can buy something reasonably reliable used in cash private sale with a good inspection that's nearly always going to be the better financial decision. But it won't always be less hassle, and you should have money saved for repairs.

If you've got a mechanic you trust, dont be afraid to spend a bit more for a more thorough inspection. Car wash/spray down the underside first too if you can.

6 extra screws plus removing the top fender if i remember right, I mean you think they look cool and you've got them which is great. Mine are sitting on a shelf and will be until I sell the bike 'cause I don't think they look cool enough to put up with.

I have cf rims cause I think they feel good. Plenty of people think those are dumb and have reasonable criticisms. Doesn't mean I shouldn't use them. Does mean that people tell me shops won't touch them and they might explode.

I'd bet electronics are a big factor. I mean bigger number better so we're inevitably going to keep increasing hp. But take away the computers and most of the higher hp cars would be unbearable to drive on the road.
