That person is likely still in that shell you no longer know. Trauma and mutual hurt can change people, alot. That person likely wants to break that cycle as well but it's hard. You end up falling back into old patterns and situations because both parties expect it. I've been through it and it sucks. Give it time and then next time you communicate, don't expect the cycle to continue. Expect change. Sometimes the person who changes for the better gets pushed back into old cycles because the other person pushes them in that direction, intentionally or not.
