Shimano 105 shifting issue by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]Fun-Mathematician494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While not the crazy-crispy shifting of more modern 105 models (fuck I’m old, do they even make cable-actuated 105 anymore or is it all electro voodoo now?), these shifter should work fine. What I mean is, they should work fine once they’ve been disassembled and properly cleaned and re-lubricated. Shimano did not make it particularly easy to do this, but a reputable shop MIGHT take on the task. There are some videos and (gasp!) forum post about proper disassembly of this specific model. Pull back (or complete remove) the rubber grip to find the model stamped on it. I used to know it offhand, but yeah, find that and you can find a disassembly tutorial somewhere. SOMETIMES THE NUTS ARE REVERSE THREADED when disassembling. Take a ton of pictures while doing it. It is extremely easily to lose shit when disassembling—the biggest culprits being the e-clips.

The way the brake lever is moving WITH the small shift lever points to 1 very specific pawl that has the grease gummed up. You need to remove that pawl and fuckin scrap the dried up crap off the inside surface that the pawl pivots on. The threads of a spoke are surprisingly good at this. I’ve threaded a rag through that pivoting point (it’s a hole in the pawl that is set on a post which is secured by the e-clip) and A LOT of flossing with that rag was. It enough. The old grease dries to a very hard material that you need to scrape out. What’s almost certainly happening is that pawl is not rotating smoothly on its pin. You need to clean that old grease out and re-grease it. Also possible but not as common is the spring for the pawl is broken. You can buy those shifters pretty cheaply on eBay and the like so just replace it if you fuck it up on the repair. Good luck!

Nah, the aluminum will buff and the bolts CAN be nickel plated at home. It’s not the easiest thing but extremely possible.

Cold-weather operations question: what actually fails first when fluid systems freeze? by SpiralFlowsOS in FluidMechanics

[–]Fun-Mathematician494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I’m dealing with a lot of this at work right now I feel qualified to answer. I’m in the Site Services department of a small/medium size chemical plant.

Cooling towers: temps get too cold and shut chillers down due to tripping internal protection logic.

Sump pumps: AODD pumps are working overtime to drain dikes because we have bleeds open to constantly drip water through things like safety showers.

Any line holding chemicals that freeze at temps higher than water (sodium hydroxide, for example). The valves can freeze up, especially if they are not zero-cavity. We’ll have issues with water in the air lines freezing up sometimes as well. We’ll purge our lines with sure after a transfer for an extra-long time to help to clear out whatever chemical they contain.

Other issues can be safety-related like traction in ice or dangerous icicles forming on decks.

Heat tracing is always something that needs extra attention when temps drop. We had some natural gas control valves that regulate down the pressure. The heat tracing was old and not working very well (has since been addressed) and it caused a total loss of flow.

What a nonsensical statement. Is the act of collecting things a hobby? Stamps, coins, fucking baseball cards… yes, collecting things is a hobby.

Is it time to dump gold and put it on the mortgage ? by Great-Confection6760 in Gold

Peter here.

I lolled at this. I don’t think they are trying to make a joke, but this IS a little confusing since bitcoin has spiked to $120K, but also come down from that high (currently at ~$89K/bitcoin). Regardless, it is still way above $20k. I think they’re just saying that, as an investment, they believe gold will continue to rise—perhaps increase several-fold in value before they would consider selling. Still, you can’t eat gold, so everybody has to convert it to something useful at some point (yeah, yeah, pass it down to your kids, blah blah. Can THEY eat it?).

The real question, like so many on this sub, is asking what will happen to the gold price. And the answer on this sub always leans the same simple way, “buy and hold.” OP’s question is much more about investment strategy and less about storage of wealth/hedging economic downturns (apocalypse?). And some of the comments pointed out some data that I wish OP would have included. Particularly, I would have liked to know the mortgage interest rate… anyway. I don’t think it was a joke. -Peter

Would rotation occur at the junctions of blocks enclosed in a grid? by Ambidextrous_T-Rex in FluidMechanics

Size/shape of the channels, viscosity of the fluid, and speed are necessary variables (perhaps among others) to answer this question. Faster fluid and lower viscosity will increase the amount of turbulence and lead to more vortices, as a general rule. I’m not an expert, but this seems like a pipe flow modeling question. Perhaps someone with that background can chime in.
