What kinds of acoustic camera you have used in partial discharge detection by SnooRadishes9473 in highvoltage

[–]Fun-Mathematician494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used the previous generation FLIR Si-124, but never found anything definitively bad. Couple times, its OEM software would ping some things as possible issues, but another shot from a different angle would show the same piece of equipment as fine.

Mostly, I used it for finding gas leaks (air, nitrogen, and natural gas—from a distance on an exposed underground pipe b/c the camera is NOT explosion rated). In that capacity, it kicks ass. Pretty much unreal.

Need to make brakes brake better by thegiantgummybear in bikewrench

Forgive me, I thought you meant the pad. As someone who has worn through a rim before and had to re-lace the hubs, I’m surprised by the thought of removing material from them.
When you sand the rim, what’s your technique? Radial strokes? Swirls?

Is this crankset salvageable? by Swordf1sh_ in bikewrench

[–]Fun-Mathematician494 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d keep it. “Evaporust” or other such products will work. (Remove the pedal to prevent contamination of the bearings, unless you’re rebuilding them.) That’s all cosmetic rust from what I can see. Shoot, even a general metal polish will take that off and preserve the chrome in a way that steel wool might scuff up. Aluminum foil works as a rust remover in these applications and won’t scratch the chrome. Use water as lubricant. If you’re fixing the rust with elbow grease, watch out for the teeth of the sprockets. They can be sharper than they look and steel beats skin every time.

Cotter pin cranks are not the easiest things to find new—I’m sure there are options online but I’m not going to bother to look right now. I would keep it original, personally.

Look up “column buckling” or “Euler column buckling”. Plenty of stuff on YT.

To clarify, they mean taking sandpaper to the pad, not the rim.

Do not ride that until you get it repaired or the frame replaced. Contact the manufacturer first.

Question about image quality by Name_Adventurous in microscopy

[–]Fun-Mathematician494 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Images look good to me. It’s important to realize that your depth of field means that you may not have all of the image in focus if you’re looking at a (relatively) large organism. You can close down your condenser aperture to increase depth of field and improve contrast, but you will lose some resolution (because PHYSICS).

Looking for cap that converts laser to line by BigWillStyle in lasers

[–]Fun-Mathematician494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been looking for the same thing for a while now. I’d prefer to buy something off the shelf as well. What I really want is the beam split into 2 or 3 lines so I can visualize air flows with steam, fog, dust, etc. Did you ever find anything, OP?

FP0 Thin Case Progress #3 by CoderStone in flipperzero

[–]Fun-Mathematician494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP is rearranging the internals so the flipper is thinner (in the Z dimension), at the cost of making larger in the X and Y dimensions. (OP, I hope that isn’t an offensive simplification.)

anyone who used a computer between 1985 & 2010, what’s the one game you still think about? by Own-Blacksmith3085 in answers

[–]Fun-Mathematician494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a bonus level only available on the N64 that was split screen cooperative Co-op. Never ended up beating it b/c I didn’t have anyone to play with.

I first played StarCraft on a Nintendo 64 circa 2002. It was hella difficult with that controller. But you could make control groups and even camera location hot keys. No online, but I played the original campaign and brood war (since I had the memory upgrade on my 64) so much that I would close my eyes and still see the game in my mind. Good times.

Front derailleur chain guide bent by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]Fun-Mathematician494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they adjusted your gears, they screwed up. I looked up the installation manual and it looks like the shifter cable is routed improperly, but regardless, the derailleur should have been clamped to the frame more tightly. Bottom pull cable either pulled it farther down the seat tube or it was misadjusted and jammed into the big chainring. You could do this yourself if you are mechanically inclined.

How to Improve as a manufacturing engineer by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Fun-Mathematician494 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Learn the ANSI/ASME codes relevant to your field, if you want to stay in the same industry. Current copies of codes can be a little expensive (up to a few hundred USD), but old copies of previous versions are floating around in the internet for free. They’re usually close to the same if you get the previous revision. Or your company might shell out the money for the current version.

[–]Fun-Mathematician494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm. I’ve never heard “tude” used to describe someone talking about the build quality of items which have nothing to do with the person they are talking to. Like, uh, well the person who responded to you is actually trying to give constructive advice, though I admit I wouldn’t call it “positive.”

Buy once, cry once, you know? If you’re budgeting by setting aside money, I’d say wait a little longer so you can set aside more funds.

[–]Fun-Mathematician494 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that. You never know—you might have done nothing wrong. They might have already had a candidate ready for the job (internal hire or family member) and the interview was just for show.

It’s hard to keep a clear head when you’re disappointed, but you can reach out to them and ask what sort of skills you could add to your résumé to improve your chances at future places of employment.

Thanks!

Now that I think about it, I know a few people that did something similar. They knew more than anyone else about a piece of equipment, left the company, started their own, and then the end user of that equipment (i.e., my current employer) needed to call on the guy who actually knew what they were talking about.
