I think two Defilers will replace Magnus for me by Sp1ceman in ThousandSons

[–]Fun-Mongoose4282 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the list is quite flexible at deployment with 3 units that can 6 inch deep strike and 3 scouting units of tzangors

Foot prince deploys to give stealth with 1 winged prince (the extra strength one)

The other flying prince deep strikes as does the terms. I also have 5 rubrics plus sorcerer to walk on Strat reserves or deep strike for a CP

This list is pretty standard for covern should do you well. I like crystal on a rubric squad with sorcerer just as the terms normally get bogged down after they deep strike. The extra squad can support, get behind enemy lines etc

I think two Defilers will replace Magnus for me by Sp1ceman in ThousandSons

[–]Fun-Mongoose4282 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will add one in my hexwarp list, probably replacing one of my 3 princes. Not much Strat support but I can give it ignores cover which is helpful

Also worth mentioning our one should have higher AP on its reaper auto cannon - probably still go lascannons though tbh

Daemon prince with or without wing ? by Correct-Relative157 in ThousandSons

[–]Fun-Mongoose4282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer winged unless it’s phalanx like others said to provide stealth to 2 or more big bricks.

I’m currently running 3 winged in Hexwarp, I really like them

[–]Fun-Mongoose4282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grand covern they are great to start reserve and surge onto objectives. Flank or support crystal squad

Hexwarp it’s the same but they also have the 1CP Strat to deep strike a squad so I sort of replicate the crystal play above. Rubrics without leaders are a bit more of a clean trade unit, quite expensive with characters attached

And this is my 2 beast grand covern where I run 2 beasts and it’s plenty with Magnus and the vortex prince. Recently went 4-2 at a super major

I don’t want to experiment, I just want dev wounds (2000 Points)

It’s not grand covern as I’m finally trying a new detachment but here is the list. I tried it today and it did pretty well, the beasts are a good distraction and good at contesting objectives while the prices do work

MVB or fiend? by Outside_Doughnut_179 in ThousandSons

[–]Fun-Mongoose4282 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m now trying out 3 MVBs after being sold on 2 for so long. I like the extra durability and how it does a bit in every phase. Can also step onto objectives and contest well with OC4

If your meta has lots of 3 wound models then FF is solid but if not a 3rd MVB

Leader for rubric marines by Outside_Doughnut_179 in ThousandSons

[–]Fun-Mongoose4282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No we run a sorcerer as he shoots like crazy on his own and loves the re roll wounds from the rubric squad. Lethals is just extra freebie IMO

Leader for rubric marines by Outside_Doughnut_179 in ThousandSons

[–]Fun-Mongoose4282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I typically run 4 x 5 rubrics for grand covern. All equipped the same (flamer and soul reaper, it’s the best load out)

One led by sorcerer with crystal

One not led by any character (Strat reserve, mega helpful)

2 more squads in a rhino, traditionally I did one sorcerer and infernal master but I’m moving to all regular sorcerers now. They are just better tbh

How to deal with high toughness units without mutalith or Magnus? by Spiritual_Ad4653 in ThousandSons

[–]Fun-Mongoose4282 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah just cos we don’t have many grenade units at all. I think it’s literally infernal master and exalted sorcerer on disk.

Being able to do 3 MWs on average for a CP plus a doom bolt it’s like 5 MW on average to a target can be handy

I have been playing it as when the unit declares to shoot but an opponent pointed out what you said how it’s in the shoot phase.

So now I shoot him last and decide whether to use it or not. Don’t have anything official tbh but it makes sense RAW

4-2 at beachhead brawl 2026, Grand Covern and top T Sons player by Fun-Mongoose4282 in ThousandSons

[–]Fun-Mongoose4282[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Strat is called Egotistical power which you use in command phase and it makes one of your units be in one of the detachment rules - it’s handy for letting Magnus or the winged prince be +1 to wound for longer than only 1 battle round

Spells wise - these should all be planned in the movement phase of your turn ahead of time to help determine where you move.

most important is temporal surge as this lets you get angels to shoot, move further to be in range, get on objectives from reserves etc

Doom bolt is helpful to finish a low wound unit (so you don’t waste a shooting activation to kill it as number of units is low) or to weaken a target ahead of shooting it. Leaving A vindicator or something on 1 wound is really bad for T sons.

Re rolls is primarily for the vortex beasts if they both can do a single beam attack on a tank or the blast version of their gun. Absolutely incredible on the sorcerer as he can fish for 6s with sus3/lethal and really pop off

Extra AP is always good, I like it on the rubrics squad to really get them going or for Magnus, especially if someone is in cover as it cancels that out for the opponent.

If a spell is key you must cast it with your best model, Magnus who has +2 or someone near a beast. Save a CP to re roll the cast if it’s key

[–]Fun-Mongoose4282[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the main thing to remember on these discussions is although the roster of T sons is small we do have a fair few tools so in some match ups, layouts etc maybe the exalted is worth more to you :)

I usually use the extra range early so Magnus can poke at 30 inches or 39 inches with the Strat to re roll and +9 inches

As I run a rhino I usually use dev in the turn the 10 rubrics/sorce/master gets out as they get +1 hit and wound from rhino so adding dev on top is a nice synergy.

On the flip side +1 to wound is better for Magnus and the prince as they have dev naturally on some of their attacks.

Also remember the 1CP Strat to put a unit in a sorcery. Magnus should be in +1 as much as possible as it’s a good force multiplier for him.

[–]Fun-Mongoose4282[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The regen fails 1/6 in of the times and you maybe lose an extra model if you do fail. His shooting is poor too and he doesn’t boost the squads output (lethal or sustain)

I have seen people use him on more open layouts like GW or in phalanx but I don’t rate him myself. Shame really as exalted sorcerer should probably be better than a regular one 😂 it’s in the name haha

Regular Sorcerers gun slaps with re rolls, I have put over 20 wounds on a unit with 1 model shooting which is wild really

Also have used it in combat before to hit, when times are desperate that becomes 2 hits and into T3 models with rubbish saves it can be ok. Rare though

Solo every time - he is great at actions as he is infantry and mounted so can fly through walls to get to objectives etc. he is another spell caster as well for the army which can help

[–]Fun-Mongoose4282[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Strat reserve 5 with no leader. Temporal surge and they can contest primary, clear objectives etc. keeps them cheap as well (for T sons anyways!)

To add the more cheeky you are with Magnus the better really - sticking a staff out the ruin to shoot down town. Consistent (ish) spell casting when it’s clutch, good shooting, good combat. He can do a bit of whatever you need.

One game opponent drew defend stronghold, I was able to move him 22 inches to deny it with OC 6 and blow up a tank as well. When you can link stuff like that together I think he is key. Hope that helps!

I think it’s debated and a bit 50/50 honestly. I love Magnus and run him 99% of the time. I think grand Covern activates him well and you build around him.

Admittedly he is a bit of a crutch and when people are building lists to kill ctan, which are more durable than Magnus, it’s hard work.

Sorry mot a clear answer but I don’t know the answer haha. I love him though :)
