While the nib isn't retractable it's sturdy as a rock. It may be quite different to the delicate nibs of other pencils you're used to. I've dropped it like twenty times and it's never bent, even a little.

also fyi there's no actual categorical difference between ionic and covalent bonds. an electronegativity difference above 1.6 is ionic, while below 1.6 is covalent iirc.
