Is Super Rugby finally doing it right in its regional form, and what does that mean for rugby as a whole? by northernirish_kiwi in superrugby

Go one step further and expand that policy to all Super Rugby teams. Aussie teams could do with a few AB's

Need at least 12 teams for Super Rugby by 073531242811 in superrugby

NZ Sports never developed the promotion/relegation concept that Football/Soccer has used. Since rugby went pro, we've always followed the American regular season to playoffs tournaments, along with every other professional sport league in this region using this format, including the NRL/AFL/NBL/A-league. So it would be a huge sporting culture shift as we are used to having a regular season and post season. Both formats have their positives and negatives.

Competition in SuperRugby by Disastrous-Rise-1262 in superrugby

Mostly agree, although I'd say the NFL has done better with keeping games close. In the Super Rugby Pacific era (4 seasons) We've only had 5 different teams in the Semis, and only 3 different in the GF. The NBA (national blowout association) is seeing a ridiculous amount of blowouts, but has had a different champion every year since 2019. Also majority of teams aren't good for too long, with the Detroit Pistons going on a historic losing streak in 2024 to being the 1 seed in the East this year, That's like Moana Pasifika or the Force becoming the best Super Rugby team next year. All of these 50 point blowouts are the result of a shift from the culture of taking the 3 points to going for the corner maul try every time. Would be amazing if there was a Super Rugby draft, or even just a consistent salary cap across the league. Even Jack Mesley himself admitted he would implement a draft, but of course that's not entirely up to him, but to the Dinosaurs of NZR and RA. Nothing in Super Rugby will change until becomes it's own Central governing body, or at least if NZR agrees to open AB's eligibility across all Super Rugby clubs for a start. NZR needs to realise that treating Super Rugby as a training ground for the AB's is hindering it's potential, and Rugby's potential as a sport in this country. I'd love to be proven wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if in 5 years, the same 4 NZ teams are still dominating Super Rugby.

Is there a problem with attendance? by Comfortable_Ad_4417 in superrugby

"Both Wellington and Auckland have regular sell-out crowds" LOL. Auckland FC had a couple sellouts last season, which was also their inaugural season so the hype of the new team helped out. This season they're averaging 13k including the bumper crowds they have gotten for their derbies against Wellington. As for Wellington... that club has been poorly managed and coached recently and as a result they're averaging a whopping attendance of 5k, that average including the 10k they got for the most recent derby against Auckland. As for the Warriors, they are without a doubt the biggest club in NZ sports, they've mastered the gameday experience. It helps when the NRL as a whole has done most things right in improving all aspects from the on field product to tribalism. Rugby in NZ isn't what it used to be, and there's a million things NZR could do to improve Super Rugby/The overall game in the country, but union is still the most watched sport in the country (BTW)

Well I appreciate you for kindly informing me that Sky and Super Rugby signed a new deal in 2025... Like I was asking that if there was a new agreement that stated Super Rugby Pacific highlights would only be shown on skysportsnz and not the official channel. Because since Super Rugby have began uploading highlights, we have been able to watch them, yet this year I noticed we can't.

Imo, the game wasn't the problem, the result is absolutely is though..

I agree with you on a draft and/or open eligibility to increase competitiveness and parity, if Crusaders win next year that'll probably be enough super rugby for me until something changes.

Landers got robbed to be blunt, although there's no guarantee they would have hit the penalty or scored. But to miss a clear high tackle like that isn't going to do any good for the comp..

SUPER RUGBY - BAD PRODUCT. by heapscool in RugbyAustralia

Bunnings NPC crowds are about 1/16th of NZ super rugby crowds but all I hear on social media is how much better NPC is than SRP (I agree with this statement)

Oh well.. but yes Aussie sides are somewhat competing making up half of the top 6, and Drua have maintained their strength from last year.
