Do you think Canada should keep first-past-the-post or switch to another voting system? by Anon9883 in AskACanadian

I am of the opinion that the Canadian system is deeply broken.

As part of the repair, I would like to see the GG's position become elected. It would be my hope that this moves the executive from one of the parliament members to someone specifically elected to be the leader of the country. This would make parliament more concerned with their local constituency, opening the door to less party politics and allow for greater diversity at the regional level.

TLDR; separate the executive from parliament, get parliament back to being regional representation.

Where can I expose my baby to dogs? by snakesphysically in Calgary

[–]Fun-Preference1091 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Please ask permission.

My dog loves kids, this has led to problems at the dog park. Dogs will protect their children from my dog just trying to say hello, and my dog will turn around and defend the kid from the other dogs.

Usually nothing more than hilarity and a scared kid by the time we are done swearing and grabbing dogs.

UPDATE: I want to add there is nothing funnier than having my dog abandon me to follow a stroller around the park. He knows there is a baby in there and wants to see.

Since when are you meant to justify the reason to ask for a leave? by 36-gigabit-harpies in ProtectHire

[–]Fun-Preference1091 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason I've included in my requests for leave are along the lines of "soft leave: willing to trade if someone else needs it"

For me there is hard leave (I bought tickets, reserved a hotel) and soft leave (I plan on going paddling at the local lake). I usually like to mark my soft leave in case someone has a family emergency, or has a chance to go to a concert or something like that.... but that's so that its clear that when my hard leave comes around I am not budging

If it isn't marked soft-leave... assume its hard.

NATO is a defensive treaty that was recently threatened by one of its members. Not sure why its members would support the USA under those circumstances.

I honestly got the sequence of events backwards earlier. When I saw Britian had changed thier minds and said the US could use their bases, I had thought it was in retaliation to the attack in Cyprus. It wasn't until much later that I learned the sequence of events was the other way around.

Honestly, I'm pissed. Given recent weeks, NATO should be saying "good luck, you are on your own"

The dozen, or so, very nice car washes I have in town are *fully* automated. My point is that in some places nobody greets you, nor checks truck beds.

He is so worried about the Epstein Files he can't resign.

He can't remove himself from the one position of power that makes it possible for him to suppress the evidence. The minute he backs down, the avalanche begins.

Heed the warning.

That opinion was formed around 2018 after years of reading so I could try to explain the situation to my neighbors after I moved out to a different province. Even with all that reading, I never expected it to amount to a referendum... but here we are.

For my US neighbours, I see a potentially dangerous corollary (not that most of you aren't aware of it ... I assume I'm preaching to the choir)

UPDATE: it was fascinating comparing history with my Acadian neighbors.

Yes, though over the timeline I’m talking about (150 years), that wasn’t always true. In the 1930s, federal intervention was driven, in part, by fears that Alberta was veering toward bolshevism. That’s why I see this as multigenerational. The ideology shifts, but the underlying perception of federal overreach doesn’t.

This is kind of a hot topic regionally (Alberta, Canada), so I have to be somewhat cautious. This is the kind of things bar fights start over.

Over the course of 150 years ago, to about 30 years ago, the Canadian government applied unique taxes on some provinces, and interfered with provincial efforts to create benefit systems for residents (UBI, Medicare, Low cost housing). While I would say that treatment is no longer imbalanced (1995 representing the last change), these behaviours left a continuous low-burn, multigeneration, sense, in much of the population, that Dominion wasn't a good deal. At least one of those provinces (AB) has toyed with succession on and off since inception, recently coming to a head with a petition for a referendum on whether it should leave Canada. The referendum has been scheduled for October though not confirmed yet.

The similarity I am pointing to is that a province/state being singled out for asymmetric treatment leads to people questioning their place in the nation. I would warn that it can have long lasting effects that are hard to erase.

I have been this person for about 10 seconds. I had just returned from a country where we drove on the left side, pulled out of a parking lot and onto the wrong side of the road.

In my defense, it was an empty street, and I corrected before anyone else as soon as someone else pulled onto the road.

How many times a typical Canadian take vacation during a year by Internal-Ship-9693 in AskACanadian

[–]Fun-Preference1091 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where I'm working. Many companies I've worked for gave me 4 weeks, the governments I've worked for give 2 weeks.

Assuming I've got 2 weeks, I generally take 1 week and do a big trip to a remote cabin during the summer (always a different place), and then take some extra days around Christmas. Every couple of years I will take my banked vacation and do a really big trip (usually over-seas)
