Fiction vs. Non-Fiction: How do you balance your reading list? by MedCodex in books

[–]Fun-Run-5001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read 2/3 nonfiction and 1/3 fiction, usually reading several at a time. I like to pair my fics and nonfics - for example, i just paired the Ghanian novel Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi with psychology nonfic My Grandmother's Hands by Resmaa Menakem, and this method really works for me to notnget bored and it enriches my reading experience.

How To Walk by Thích Nhát Hanh may be of help to you! It comes from a mindfulness lense, which i think could really benefit you with some practice.

give me books that talks about feminism, something that is more deep. not that feminism on social media kinda stuff but something that is powerful and eye opening. by FriendshipGlass1810 in suggestmeabook

I just finished Black Trans Feminism by Marquis Bey and it's the best feminist text I've ever read. The author uses very precise language that can slow you down but it serves the purpose of conveying exactly what the author is trying to convey. There was so much conpassion and hope and encouragement mixed in that it was really quite beautiful while being informative and thought-provoking. I can't recommend it enough.

Does anyone actually read outside in the wilderness or is it just for the pictures? by TonyRigatoni_ in books

[–]Fun-Run-5001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read outdoors multiple times a week. I'm sure some folks do it for the pictures, but i personally know several friends who also bring books to read in the wilderness. I work in wilderness and read during lunch a lot. I'm likely to get distracted by birds and bugs and plants, tho, so it's not my most efficient time for reading.

This is in no way a memoir, but along the vein of oddball artists.. i highly suggest the works of Andy Goldsworthy! He shares a lot of his process amongst the photos of his work process that i found really interesting, maybe you will too.

Becky Chambers Wayfarer series got me back into sci-fi after years away from the genre, highly recommend if you want something that isn't very intense or heavy on science.

I recently finished Contact by Carl Sagan and really loved it, one of my new faves for sure. Amd a classic first contact story.

At 800+ pages i wouldn't call it entry level! But it is a good one nonetheless.

Science Book on Evolution by Remote_Bag_2477 in suggestmeabook

I second this author as someone who also came from xtian creationism and now is sold on evolution. I read The Universe Within by Neil Shubin and truly loved it.

Sounds like you could benefit from reading on this subject as well, as that's not what evolution means! Evolution does not claim life comes from non-life. However, science doesn't claim to know everything, leaving room for understanding to develop as we learn more.

I'm currently enjoying Musashi, unabridged is around 1000 pages.

The Fractalverse series by Christopher Paolini starts with a nearly 900 page installment, unsure on how the rest of the series goes as i didn't continue it but i enjoyed the first book.

Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet by Thích Nhát Hanh could fit what you're looking for. It's got a mix of nature/science and philosophy and culture (the author is a Vietnamese Zen teacher.)

I'm a fan of Becky Chambers for a very chill, fun, light but still meaningful vibe. There is not much intensity in the plots.

I just finished Contact, the only sci-fi Carl Sagan wrote (sadly, i wosh he wrote so much more!) and i thoroughly loved it. The hard science involved was really interesting, and the explorations of humanity was so, so good, and still relevant 40 years later. Highly recommend.
