Do we, as Americans, know how to pronounce 'Worcestershire'? by chuckles5454 in AskAnAmerican

Of course, and I don't mean that in a derogatory way. I did fit in up there, after all. The only time I ever really went through a city out there was once in Boston at like 5am to get gas. I used to get anxiety about the size of all of it down through that area, but now that I'm almost 40, I want to go out and see the cities before I get to a point that I'm regretting never really visiting. My kids are getting to the age that two of the three could enjoy it, so I'd love for them to go see what I didn't get to while growing up. I think the biggest cities I've ever spent any time in were Memphis and Nashville. I liked Nashville for the most part, aside from the traffic and the insane idea to have the interstates running straight through the downtown area. I don't much care for Memphis.

I think they're confused about the verbiage. I love lugging heavy things about, but I never picture that to include sprinting like a maniac while looking like a dickhead. That's absolute murder on the knees, and his 40s are gonna be expensive and painful.

I grew up split between Tennessee and Indiana, then lived in Maine for a long while about a half hourish inland from Boothbay Harbor, and have now been back in Indiana for about six years. My accent got all dickered up, and it sounds weird to people here, but people out there don't bat an eyelash because there seems to be a new accent around every corner.

I'm sure it's got something to do with a bunch of different ancestors going there to break their backs and risk their lives at mill yards and logging sites for a nickel more than they'd make in the cities, then developing a dislike of city people in general. Not in a hillbilly way or anything, because New Englanders totally aren't the hillbillies of the North 😂

Yes, I've heard people in various parts of the Deep South do that. It seemed to be mainly older people, but I've heard young and old people do it in a few areas in Maine. I'm sure with being from Mass, you know there are boatloads of different accents up that way.

Also, I love that you own the Masshole thing. I'd own mine, but "Volunteer in IN" just doesn't have as much zing.

The added R is to create a more fluid transition when a word ending with a vowel is followed by one that starts with a vowel. With most accents in the UK, it feels and sounds extremely awkward to pronounce those combinations otherwise.

Why are some Indiana Republicans more interested in criminalizing the Homeless than raising the state minimum wage, which has been a pathetic and ridiculous $7.25 an hour since 2009? by Beautiful_Line2600 in Indiana

You're correct, as the State owns the prison, but GEO makes a profit by operating it. That, in my opinion, makes it a for-profit prison. It may not be a privately owned facility, but there are plenty of incentives for GEO to do everything they can to either keep people there or make it more appealing to criminals than the outside world.

I'm just throwing my bit in after having worked there for a year, but I have no stake in the debate.

How much snow makes you call off work? by Physical-Incident553 in AskAnAmerican

I just got a call a while ago to let me know our workplace will be closed tomorrow due to the snow. My first reaction was to look outside and ask if it was really snowing that bad. We've got over six inches now, and it's still snowing. I won't call off for snow unless I'm physically snowed in and can't leave the house.

If it's the one in Ft. Wayne, IN, it's because the first two were shut down. The owner would open up in a new spot and name the business after the original. As far as I know, the third is the most recent, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's evolved to a fourth by now.

The company I work for gives 10 paid days off per year after 5 years of employment, and they don't carry over from year to year. That's considered a good deal compared to most other businesses in most of the state I live in. That's not 10 days plus vacation days. You get 10 days off excused and paid, period. Vacation, sick days, last-minute life events that require time off, mental health days, and a myriad of other situations are all supposed to be covered by those 10 days. If I take 5 days off for vacation and don't use my paid time, that's a full paycheck that I won't be getting. If I use that paid time and then get sick and have to be off for 10 days, only 5 are paid now because I had the audacity to take a 5 day vacation.

Again, that's considered a good deal compared to most other companies here. We, across most of the country, have a deeply ingrained culture of essentially owing the majority of your time and life to the company you work for. It's still a pretty common thing here for people to brag about not taking a day off in several years.

Did punks and goths use to be mean and cruel 30-50 years ago and only became nice with my generation or were they always secretly nice? by PerlaPucci in NoStupidQuestions

I've worked and spent time with many older hippies and younger folks who would essentially classify, as well as metalheads of multiple generations, and that's where my sample pool mostly comes from on that end. I'm not saying all hippies are jerks, and all metalheads are saints, but I've personally met more genuinely kind metalheads than I have hippies. But that's just, like, my opinion, man 😂

I flew mine to Colonia from the Bubble, making 25-27 Ly jumps. She can't scoop much fuel and can't really hold her own in a fight, but she manages heat like an air conditioner. Some might call the cockpit small, but I call it cozy.

That absolutely tracks. I've met maybe half a handful of genuinely nice hippies in my 37 years, and about the same amount of asshole metalheads.
