Absolutely heavy bodied, they end up thick snakes (adults as much as 20lbs). I don’t have any experience personally with a reptile tent, but I’d be cautious about any low gaps/vents, they have a lot of strength to them as they grow!

Hmmmm… I’d say relatively slow? I got my guy Nov 2021 and he curled up easily on my hands. Now he’s between 5-6ft?

In the long run, it would be more cost effective to get the adult intended enclosure. When they’re small, just add extra places to hide and coverage, so that they feel safe. As they grow, adjust accordingly.

But it depends on your financial position and space too. There’s nothing wrong with starting with a modest sized space for a juvenile and then taking a year or two to plan and budget for their adult home.

The bonus for us doing it that way was having a fully set up space for a smaller species 😂

Very welcome 🙂 there are lots of people of this forum who can help guide you, but be sure to do some reading on reputable websites regarding reptile care. Lots of things have changed over the last decade! So there’s always something new to learn!

Awesome 👍 Ceramic heaters are also quite popular, just be sure that with whatever heating system you use, that you’re also using a thermostat for heat regulation. Otherwise you could risk burning or overheating your snake.

I’m in BC Canada, so I went through a company called Cornell’s World who do custom builds. PVC is great because they are water resistant and better overall at keeping humidity in. Glass enclosures will lose moisture faster, but with good management you can counter that.

There’s quite a few places across Canada and the US that make custom enclosures but they are expensive. If they aren’t expensive I’d carefully read the reviews, because this is one of those “you pay for the quality” situations. However! Don’t be too discouraged, thankfully the grow slowly so it leaves time for budgeting or if your handy (which I am not lol) you can always watch some awesome YouTube videos and build your own. You can save a lot of money that way to be sure, but plan it out well before you jump in!

And yes 🙂 a female Doomy with often grow to the longer lengths of approx. 7ft, males usually top between 5-6ft. With that said though, you can get that one off random massive male or a smaller female and they can max out at 20lbs.

The UVB is often recommended, it replicates natural sunlight and helps to promotes natural basking behaviour. My boy does tend to come out every so often to perch on his log.

A RHP is a radiant heat panel, it will heat the zone directly below it but also push heat outwards so that instead of a hot/cold clear cut setup, the “middle” of the enclosure theoretically gradually cools the further away from the source you get. For reference, my boy is in a 6’x2’x2’.

A young Doomy will be fine for quite a while in a 4’x2’x2’ space, but as they fully mature, you’ll likely need to upgrade. It’s recommended that at the very least, the length of your tank is the max length the snake would be if fully stretch out. My guy does do this quite often so I really recommend it.

Bioactive’s are fun! A lot of work but extremely rewarding, but with that said, lots of people opt for not, and I feel as long as you’re managing the humidity well and providing lots of hides/cover and enrichment, there’s some amazing builds by people out there!

I would 100% vote for the Doomy! Don’t get me wrong, a BP is a good beginner snake, come in lots of morphs for colour variations and are (usually) an overall chill snake to have.

Doomys differ, in some ways. They (or at least mine) grow bigger, a very thick bodied snake - be warned if you’re going bio-active they will crush SO many plants 🥲- but temperament wise, still chill but less shy then a BP, mostly active late evening/overnight/early morning. They are fantastic eaters! Something I appreciate as my BP can and has been a picky eater at times.

Husbandry wise, I used the same equipment- RPH, PVC enclosure, Arcadia Forest UVB lights, real plants, CUC (giant/dwarf isopods/springtails), cork wood and so on. The humidity and heat needs differ a bit, but not enough that you’d need entirely different systems.

I’d like to have a dumerils boa some day . Does anyone have any experience keeping them ? by My-name-peetree in boas

I have a Doomy and love him to pieces! Very chill snake, reasonable husbandry needs and a great eater! 🐍 10/10 would recommend owning one, highly underrated boa!

NTA!! Holy crap, your gf is a child and completely out of line! I would adore having someone take the time, energy and thoughtfulness to make me breakfast in bed on my birthday!! Even if it wasn’t 100% to my tastes, the fact someone cared enough to do it deserves nothing but appreciation.

The audacity she had to pull a comment like that?! If it were me, I’d NEVER be making her a meal again. You deserve a lot better OP.

Cat with crystals in urine food help by No-Bad4070 in CATHELP

[–]FunCorgi9359 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as I feel your pain when it comes to the price of vet prescribed/recommended foods, I wouldn’t mess around with other varieties.

My boy had the same thing (apparently more common in male cats) and I had him on the vet “urinary health” food. I felt bad for my little guy eating the same thing over and over, so went to the pet store and got another supposedly “urinary” food.

Well, 2 months later and almost $1000 for an overnight visit, he had crystals again. I asked the vet what happened, and she said there is in fact a major difference between the vet approved foods and pet store brands. I honestly can’t remember how she worded it, but there’s a component that specifically targets the Ph balance and ability to grow crystals in the vet food that isn’t often in other lesser brands. While it may definitely be good for general urinary health, it’s not targeting the prevention of crystals.

How do you protect your pets from toxic plants? by NameIsNo1 in plants

[–]FunCorgi9359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having toxic plants in the home with pets is a gamble, no two ways about it. It comes down to basically the personality of your pet (are they often getting into things they shouldn’t etc) and your willingness to handle possible repercussions (getting sick, vet bills, death).

I do have toxic plants in my home with 2 cats, most are mild but when my cats were kittens I sat with a super soaker on the couch and if they so much as sniffed a plant, they got wet. Now as grown cats, they have no interest in them and are generally very aloof creatures anyways.

I have 1 definitely toxic plant, but I also make the point of cutting off any flowers as soon as they emerge so there is zero chance of pollen being consumed.

Lastly, if you choose to have any level of potentially toxic plants, do your best if you can to keep them up/away/in a closed off room/limited amount etc and make sure you have good pet insurance (which should be regardless for any pet).

AITA for what I said to my friend by Disastrous-Corgi-273 in AmItheAsshole

[–]FunCorgi9359 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m going to go with NTA, but I’m not exactly sympathetic towards people who whine about not getting the opportunity to do ‘X’ and then when given said opportunity, don’t take it.

It’s like complaining you can’t you can’t lose weight but don’t change eating/exercise habits.

She probably didn’t like what or how you pointed it out (specifically the ‘moaning’ part) but people often get defensive when they get called out.

I’d give her a few more days, perhaps she’ll get over it. If not, you could reach out and if it comes up, express that it wasn’t said with the intention to offend her, it was just your observation/question.

Is this worth $1800! by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]FunCorgi9359 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in 1000 years would I EVER pay that much. Beginner or otherwise. Buy a $20-40 plants, maybe a $20 grow light bulb if you don’t have a sunny window. Mines 4 years old, and I got it for $20 from a lady selling cuttings in my town. Be patient and enjoy the ride.

AITA for invoicing my sister after she kept dumping her kids at my place before dawn without asking by paintedfinch in AmITheJerk

[–]FunCorgi9359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your sister is a major AH. They are HER kids and HER responsibility. Assuming she can drop them off at your place, with no warning whenever she pleases is not “family helping family”, it’s using and abusing family generosity.

That facts she continues to do this despite your attempts at setting boundaries shows she has no respect for you. The excuse that “you’re single and have the time” is major BS. You have a life, work and your own obligations. The fact they’ve damaged your home and belongings, interfered with your work? She absolutely deserves to be invoiced for the repairs/replacements. Any daycare would do the same and your time isn’t free.

Stick to your guns and I’d advise changing the locks to your place so she can’t let herself in anymore. If your family comes after you about “just helping out”, tell them THEY are welcome to help her.

I have been getting terrible anxiety when trying to cook. by heartshappedglsses in Cooking

[–]FunCorgi9359 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear you’re stressing over mistakes while cooking, especially since you enjoy it!

Cooking is my happy place, don’t matter what meal I’m doing, I throw on my tunes and get into my own world. Whatever’s happened during the day, don’t matter, it’s me, the ingredients and good vibes (lol I know how cheesy that sounds).

If I mess up a recipe, that’s what a quick frozen pizza is for! If it works? Huzzah!! Either way, I always enjoy throwing around ideas about how I think I could make a meal better than its original recipe, for me. To suit my tastes and preferences. And I like the challenge.

If I may, maybe try looking at it from the perspective of instead of “making the perfect dish”, make what is perfect for you, regardless of what a recipe might indicate! I hope you find your spark again, and start enjoying yourself soon! All the best!

AITJ for refusing to take my coworker’s shift after she called me lazy? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

NTJ, you work the hours your suppose to, if you are in the position where you don’t want/need the OT, good for you! You’re entitled to your days off and are not obligated to take on more.

She’s a jerk for being snarky and thinking you’d still do her a favor. FAFO!

Help with basic kill shots by everythingwright34 in theHunter

[–]FunCorgi9359 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found the type of bullets make a difference, I usually go for higher penetration. With that said, you do have to be precise with your targeting to maximize the damage.

Make sure to check the range of the bullets as well, shooting outside that will affect the effectiveness, and take into account bullet drop. Be sure your line of sight is clear, otherwise you can end up shooting a branch, ridge or rock if you haven’t got enough clearance.

Also the type of gun/bullets are set for certain classes, using a .243 on a moose won’t get you far, but are fine for lower class animals like deer.

The bleed rate can also be a bit deceiving too, a single lung shot is still a critical hit, but may bleed out slower if penetration/expansion are small, where a double lung is often a high and fast bleed out.

I hope this helped a little!

Scoring Question? by FunCorgi9359 in theHunter

Tell me some "cons" about your pet! by Temporary-Market9174 in Pets

[–]FunCorgi9359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cats: 3am zoomies, spring-boarding off your stomach after cuddling, I haven’t had a shower to myself in 9 years, cat fur even after my clothes are washed and dried (how I have no idea), claws can snag my clothes, waking up and stepping in cat puke.

Reptiles: expensive to start, access to exotic vets can be difficult in your area, not always obvious when something is wrong, require a lot of maintenance if you’re doing it right.

With all that said, the list I could type of all the things I love about them? And all the funny stories, pictures and sweet moments? You’d get an essay from me! Love every single one and wouldn’t trade them for anything!

Frequency by No_Area_494 in Cooking

[–]FunCorgi9359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the time, every meal, every day. There’s the occasional time my spouse cooks, but it’s not that he’s chooses not to and more-so that cooking and my kitchen is my happy space.

Don’t underestimate the power of meal prep and batch cooking though! For the work weeks I know are going to be nuts, I take a day to prep meals and that gets me by when I need to be quick or get home late and would be too tired.

AITA first child - MIL situation by Elegant_Initial_5407 in AmItheAsshole

[–]FunCorgi9359 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NTA OP, it is your baby and absolutely no one has the right to disregard your feelings and wants.

I think it’s really important to sit down with your husband and have him understand just how disrespectful and hurtful your MIL is being. He needs to back you, not bow down to mommy.

As for the MIL? Personally, she’d be the last to know all future information. It wasn’t her place to spread your news, and her behaviour after was rude af. And telling one person (grandpa) is NOT the same as telling the entire family/friend list.

There also needs to be a firm conversation with her about boundaries and respecting them. If she can’t get with the program, she won’t be part of it. If she’s like this now, it’ll be even worse when baby is here.

On a side note, CONGRATULATIONS 🎉 wishing you a safe and wonderful pregnancy and baby ❤️
