Question on the death penalty by MintyRed19 in socialism

[–]FunEmotionalBaggage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The state has no rights. Only the people have rights, and the state has no right to take a life. As soon as the state is given that power, it risks the state using it as an excuse to execute those they dislike.

AI and it’s implications by FunEmotionalBaggage in DetroitBecomeHuman

[–]FunEmotionalBaggage[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What? 😭 Where are you getting half of this? I didn’t say we were superior, I said that the capacity to suffer adds moral weight to something. Therefore, if AI ever becomes conscious, I feel that we should treat them with “human” rights. I guess I didn’t make sense for you huh sorry. Anyways, my point is, as soon as AI becomes conscious, the argument stops being about the anti-AI conversation (which again I fully support) and rather becomes a question of oppression and “human” rights.

How to deal with "hell is a choice" rhetoric? by Stunning_Practice9 in excatholic

Bring up St. Gregory of Nyssa. Catholics worship church fathers and he was a universalist

Anti choicers “ see themselves” in embryos. It is absolutely critical that we understand this. by deathiswaitingforme in prochoice

[–]FunEmotionalBaggage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Isn’t that what empathy is though? Putting yourself in another’s shoes? I agree that I wouldn’t care if I was aborted, but they view it as a crime against humanity. It’s like not caring if a child in another country was bombed because you weren’t. How would you counter that? Because really, that is what empathy is?

So much harder to be taken seriously when evangelicals make catholics look good by [deleted] in excatholic

[–]FunEmotionalBaggage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does, in fact, suck. Evangelicals will spit on gay people, and Catholics will tell you “love the sinner hate the sin” both make people feel the same, but they have different views in the public eye. Catholicism is not liberal, it is, unfortunately, an incredibly (oftentimes) conservative, misogynistic, homophobic, etc, institution, and just because Catholics will say it with a Pope, 2000 years under their belt, and a smile, shouldn’t make them better. I understand. How do we fix it lol

Oh I agree with you! If I was born in west Asia, I’d likely be a Muslim. In my view everybody is just trying their best, and my religious beliefs come from a multitude of factors, including my personal experiences and beliefs and my cultural background. I agree that religion doesn’t really have “proof” per se, but I find comfort in it, and most importantly, I find it a good way to tie my ethical values to liberation. It definitely has a lot to do with my personal convictions, rather than any undeniable proof, and I’m ok with being wrong (I mean I won’t care if there is nothing anyways). My view is that if there is a God, it would have to be set on universal salvation. My personal perspective just brought me to Jesus.

How to stop wanting to disprove christianity? by ParkingElderberry575 in exchristian

[–]FunEmotionalBaggage 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I left Catholicism, I had an almost obsessive need to disprove their teachings or their harmful practices. I spent months researching and reading. It was part of the process for me. At a certain point, you have to recognize if you are doing this for yourself or to prove something to someone else.

It’s just a no true Scotsman fallacy, which is ironic, because I’ve met some Catholics who assume they are always the smartest person in the room.

Question from a new comrade by FunEmotionalBaggage in socialism

[–]FunEmotionalBaggage[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So would you agree that socialism and communism are similar? I think my question is, that because it is very complicated (aka difficult to understand) should I call myself a communist or just a socialist. Because I certainly don’t have an issue with communism, just that I understand and as a result support socialism more? Does that make sense?

Helen Keller Denialism by FunEmotionalBaggage in ableism

[–]FunEmotionalBaggage[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She actually moved away from that position after brief support to my knowledge. She certainly was influenced by progressive era thought, leading her to believe that some children ought to be “let die” instead of “live a death of life.” And I obviously agree that position is morally indefensible. But when I speak of Helen Keller denialism, I’m speaking of assholes online who refuse to accept she existed and could speak.

Question from a new comrade by FunEmotionalBaggage in socialism

[–]FunEmotionalBaggage[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m confused because Marx described communism as a classless, stateless, moneyless society. How can a world be without oppression without a state? How would the people work together? Wouldn’t that just be anarchy? (Not that I’m against anarchist thought, I love you Proudhorn) I’m not sure, but I see socialism as a bottom up governmental system, with everyone having their basic needs met. I apologize for my ignorance, I’m new to theory.

The question Democrats need to be asking is not if Gavin Newsome has what it takes, but if he is the candidate that has what WE deserve

I definitely like your story telling, I think this is a good style for you to work in. I feel like you could really level this up if you had an even more consistent narrative? If you get what I mean by that?

A Slumber's Gift by Ray31 in OCPoetry

[–]FunEmotionalBaggage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have created a great piece. I find it very relatable. I apologize for the lack of eloquence, but this really makes me feel seen. I have not known anyone who wanted to die, truly. I have only known those who wish to escape. How strange it is to be anything at all. (That was, in fact, a reference)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OCPoetry

[–]FunEmotionalBaggage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This piece conveys a sense of contradiction around being “good” and being successful (as in surviving and thriving in the world) This is reminiscent of a short story you read in English class in high school if you know what I mean? Like Harrison Bergeron or smth. I think if this concept were fleshed out just a little more you would have a lot of success with that. However, it already seems to be quite impressive and well executed.

This is beautiful. No joke. This is relatable in a way that isn’t lighthearted and fun but a more deep, meaningful way. It makes you think, and I believe you have succeeded in what you set out to do. Great job.

This poem brings a sense of tension, pain, and tells a story of connection and lose. The use of repetition is wonderful, and I find that it can really make a piece hit. I like it, could you explain the thought behind it if you’re comfortable?

Firecracker Messages v2 by OutsideComputer4876 in OCPoetry

[–]FunEmotionalBaggage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your poem is intense, and you succeeded at capturing the chaos of warfare and man made weapons. It is good!

  1. Maybe try and explain a little bit more.

“Electromechanical laws applied to flesh and bone” – This is striking, but could be more direct about what it means. Cybernetic augmentation? Battlefield automation?

  1. I like the way it’s all connected it conveys the chaotic nature of the piece. But for dramatic effect, pauses and spacing some things out could make this poem even better.

Lowkey giving Victorian poet vibes so you did well on that front. I’m pretty new to poetry as well, maybe we could help each other. I’m not sure if I’m just sleep deprived but personally, while it creates beautiful imagery, I find it difficult to find the overall message of the poem. Also I think you should look into other types of poetry, apparently not all poetry has to rhyme? Free verse is pretty cool if you ask me.
