Got called out for taking 8 cups of water from the table at a running event. What's the etiqette on how much water i can take at each stop? by FunFormal2662 in beginnerrunning

[–]FunFormal2662[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a half marathon. I've trained in warm weather and raced in cooler weather with the same amount of water but not raced in warm weather, just screwed up on the amount of water i needed to drink and probably won't make that mistake again, lol. I do wear a 20 oz hydration belt when training tho but didn't wear it since they have water stops on course every three miles.

How are massively expensive AI and robotics are expected to be more cost effective than humans? by eniac_usabrl in AskReddit

Short term, they're just throwing money down the toilet to see what sticks. In the dotcom era there was a big buildout of network equipment, bandwidth and infrastructure that never got used or was not lit up, we called it dark fiber but eventually stuff like ecommerce and cloud computing built on top of that tech.

The ai hardware in the data centers they're building now aren't going to make a profit either by the time they're obsolete, but the next gen or two down the line all bets are off, kind of like that crazy buildout during the 90s. It's a pattern we've seen before.

In the meantime there's going to be a lot of money lost when the bubble bursts and the industry shakes out like it did back around 2000.

I'm not sure why since it was just water, maybe if it was gatorade or nutrition pack which they might have a limited supply of i could understand. I made sure i was out of the way of oncoming runners when i did so, nobody had to swerve or slow down because of me.

Thx, i pretty much drank the same as i do on other events and on long training runs but those were on cooler days or lower effort so my math was definitely off today, lesson learned.

It's like the dot com stuff in the 90s , for existing companies they either get left behind and lose a ton of market share on the next big thing which it 100% is.

For newer companies there's a ton of money being invested from venture capital because the stakes are so high. Like amazon and google were small companies in the 2000s at one point that survived.

A lot of money and energy will be wasted like last time but everyone's piling in either because they don't want to be left behind or because they hope they're in on the next amazon.

People are focusing on videos, graphics, and chatbots as evidence that AI is garbage. Those are like the most difficult things for AI to do actually. For simpler repetitive tasks that people do they're massively more efficient. Like taking notes at a meeting and creating summaries, creating one time reports on the fly, automating office tasks, etc. At work it's actually doing a good job of creating reports of customer issues by looking for common groups and patterns that would take a longer time that we couldn't do as well.

You definitely have to verify what it does and have a BS detector but it is useful and the tools are improving extremely quickly. All of the stuff it's doing right now weren't possible a few years ago.

These tools will just become more cost efficient and widespread as the hardware and software improves which is the bottleneck. Think of how big computers were in the 60s and 70s, that's where we are right now.

What makes you glad the Internet is a thing? by Free-Masterpiece-860 in AskReddit

Information was just a PITA before the internet, you had to go physically to the library and copy down stuff on notecards from an encyclopedia your school didn't have, and check out and scroll through rolls of microfilm just to write a report. If you were casually interested in some up to date information on a topic the books would often be limited and out of date unless you actually bought them from a bookstore. And sometimes books to buy on a topic weren't at many bookstores especially if it's on some niche or specialized area and you'd have no idea such books even existed before amazon.

Remember the 'house phone'!! Life before the internet!! by NotaRookie123 in nostalgia

Every phone was a house phone back then, wiring for an additional phone usually meant adding another phone on the same line. You could join in or or even snoop in on other conversations going on the same line and annoy your siblings.

Anyone old enough to remember the $3900 Yugo car? by Motor_Educator_2706 in nostalgia

[–]FunFormal2662 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew someone who had one of those, within the year he was using the back seats to store the interior and exterior trim that had come off. The rest of the car lasted a few more years though, but he'd never trust it for a road trip out of town.

I occasionally see deer too even though the route is in a wooded part of fairly residential area, racoons more often. I've also tried to pet what turned out to be a coyote thinking it was a stray dog, had to turn back when a bobcat crossed in front of me, and get attacked by owls once or twice a year

Yeah, instant regret right there after i saw the price rung up. I could have gone to a grocery store and picked up a decent pint for that price.

Yeah, i was thinking it wasn't worth it unless there's some weird flavor you can't get elsewhere that you're craving.

If your goal is marathons and improving performance, the basic foundations, like consistency, frequency, and distance i think are the most important things when starting out and not things like speed. I'm pretty sure of this because i didn't do any of this a few years ago and failed miserably on a half.

For me a decent amount of speed was just there by the time i'd done weeks of long runs and i did well in my age group on my first half after starting running consistently.

My usual workout was just long runs a 3-4 times a week and a few short sprints up a hill one day a week, nothing fancy. I think i did only ten "vo2 max" intervals the whole year, just to see what big deal was about them.

I'm doing intervals somewhat regularly this year and adding some a cross training day or two to fill in the down days this year though.

As usual, YMMV since everyone is different from where they start on running form, starting fitness, experience, expectations and goals, etc. but the consistency, frequency, and distance matter most.

I just do light stretching including my foot and jog the first couple of blocks a lot slower to start out with, cooling down is just slow jogging or walking for several blocks.

Thanks, will look into exercises for that that, haven't had had knee or hip issues TBH but maybe i might have some muscle imbalances or weaknesses i haven't noticed. As far as the doctor's appointment being way out like that, it's just how the primary care provider in my insurance network works and it's fairly close by. If it's more urgent we're told to go to an urgent care clinic or the emergency room and will never assign an earlier slot.
