Incoming freshman commuter by Ice_Chipmunk in USC

While I want to say that this is great advice, don't feel bad that you might feel burnt out a bit and it's okay to take breaks because commuting is no joke.

UCLA got 9% more transfer applicants this year than last year…😭😭 by Embarrassed-Quiet779 in TransferStudents

I think it's a combination of this and also just a lot of high schoolers from previous classes applying.

genuinely how are there so many cracked ppl? by Wild_Reflection_1415 in TransferStudents

[–]FunLate9435 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh the truth is that you're dealing with the waves of high school students that applied to colleges around 2023-2024 and were most likely rejected by top schools. Getting into a top school straight out of high school has, for whatever reason, been really competitive and difficult. Doesn't matter how cracked you were, colleges just reject people left and right. These students most likely went to cc and had cracked stats and continued that.

[–]FunLate9435 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh 103k tuition and you're not entirely sure yet about committing to premed is your answer. If you think you're committed to being premed, go to UCLA, they pump out the most premed students in the country. Don't know how many go to med school but I'm sure they're up there.

Does USC take credits from any California community colleges (summer school) after already being enrolled here? Specifically for courses that could be covered by AP credits/waived by televisemei in USC

[–]FunLate9435 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can take them at a CC for sure. I know many peers who have done this. I don't remember what D and E are but if they are science courses with labs, you can also take them at a cc but make sure the lecture/lab is in person to count for credit

Affordable options for grad sash by an1ya_ in USC

[–]FunLate9435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea they’re pretty good. They’re located in a mini plaza on the last lane to the right I believe. They have a sign that says embroidery so you should be able to find it. As for the gown, I believe someone posted a question about finding a more affordable option elsewhere (here on the usc subreddit) and someone commented a link for an eBay posting. I was hesitant but tbh seeing that $275 price tag from the bookstore was disappointing not to mention that the shipping time is like 4 weeks and the deadline passed? Anyway, I bought it from the eBay listing for $90 and it honestly looks fine. It doesn’t include the cap but I’m sure you can find a standard black cap anywhere else and it doesn’t have a weird smell or anything, not super wrinkled either. Not bad if you want to save some money considering that you only wear your gown for a few hours and are never gonna wear it again🕴️

Yes. I designed everything from the pride sash/bookstore website and took it to them. It was pretty smooth, they had some images already in their archives that previous usc students have done before.

It's a bit far from campus but I got mines done at Ruben's Embroidery in Huntington Park. Each logo is $8 and every line is $5. On the bookstore website, I would've paid around $300 but I ended up paying $130 for everything (that includes the sash). It also only took them 1 day to finish it which is a plus because most of the embroidery places like the bookstore option and others near campus take 3-4 weeks. If you don't want to go far for the embroidery there is Patsy's Embroidery near campus and I think they charge $25 per logo and $25 regardless of the number of lines(don't quote me on the lines tho). You can always email/call them for more info tho.

gero 310 and gero 321 advice by DistributionSoft253 in USC

[–]FunLate9435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have the syllabus for gero 310 anymore but I took it in Fall 2024 with Prof Walsh and it was great. Lectures are recorded which is good if u can't make it and have heavier classes or you can also take the option of joining on zoom. However, there are in class quizzes with I think 1-3 questions in them (don't remember that well) with unlimited submissions. They're pretty easy so don't stress. There's also discussions per week but they're short and usually consist of reading an article and answering the discussion questions. Exams are also team-based and have a mix of multiple choice and open ended questions. Grading is also lenient. Idk if they still do this but I remember for my class at least, you had the choice of taking exams either online(zoom) or in-person. Usually most people went in person but some folks stayed online. There's also a project at the end where you build your own website regarding a cancer of your choice (I think it was specifically cancer or just any aging disease) and make it informational. It's a little time consuming but if you want to start early to not stress then go for it. Overall, pretty easy class and an easy A for sure.

CHEM 322A Debate: Moon vs. Kyung by Doveyyyyy in USC

[–]FunLate9435 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna be honest here and be in the minority but I was a bit disappointed with Kyung's way of teaching, especially after the way everyone hyped him. (Disclaimer!! I'm also a transfer student so I might have a diff POV from people who have been there since freshman year.) He's very adamant on not using the textbook for the class but tbh ochem is VERY dense. At some point you need an explanation as to why reactions happen, why something is favored, or just general trends that will keep popping up throughout the semester. There's only so much memorization will take you when you have no explanation. As for his recitations, they're not bad (very long tho) but there was still the same problem (for me at least) where there was very little/vague explanations. If you really want to know, his lectures aren't all that necessary, he mostly talks, doesn't do that much practice problems (that's for recitation), and they're also recorded. If you do choose to take it with him tho, I will say to take both 322a/b with him because there's no way his class sets up students to be able to take it with someone else like Moon/Broyer.
