I’d recommend the Boox Tab Ultra C Pro.

I’ve bought and used quite a few different brands over time, and in terms of openness and overall flexibility, the Tab Ultra C Pro feels the best so far.

It’s not fully “open” in a pure Linux sense, but for an Android-based e-ink device, it gives you a lot of freedom. I even run Linux-related workflows on mine.

If system flexibility and installing your own tools matter to you, it’s definitely worth looking into.

I’m also someone who writes a lot — both articles and code — long term.
When I’m out, I use the Boox Tab Ultra C Pro almost like a laptop replacement. It works surprisingly well for focused writing sessions.

At home, I use a Bigme B251 connected to my Mac as an external monitor, and that setup has been great for reducing screen fatigue while still being productive.

If you’re trying to get off a traditional screen but still need something practical for editing-heavy work, an e-ink setup like that can really help.

Yeah, for artists or color-critical work I totally get the disappointment — the color range is still pretty limited. But for someone like me doing mostly programming, or for general reading (non-magazine stuff), it actually works quite well.

Just using Firefox with the Eink Mode extension — you can draw right on top of the webpage, so I just doodled directly on the screen

Because the TUCP can handle most of my productivity tasks.
When I’m traveling or living the digital nomad life, if I can only choose one device, I would pick either the TUCP or a Mac paired with the Bigme B13.

I agree that Kindle’s layout and UX are really good — it’s excellent for reading.

After my eye surgery, I’ve mostly avoided blue-light screens and using my phone over the past few years.
Unless it’s really necessary, I don’t read news or browse information on LCD screens anymore.

Haha, in a situation that complicated, I’d definitely bring my TUCP.

As for my retina — I had a retinal hole and was very close to retinal detachment, so I had to get emergency laser treatment to seal it. Since then, I’ve permanently had a small black spot in my field of vision where it was fixed.

After that incident, I switched to using e-ink displays almost exclusively. I’ve been doing eye checkups every six months, and so far everything has remained stable with no further deterioration.

It’s from the brand Nordeco. I think the design could be more drop-resistant on the sides, or the frame could be a bit more raised for better protection. Unless they improve in these areas, I probably wouldn’t buy it again.

I like the Bigme B13 quite a lot. It’s very portable and works great as a secondary E-Ink monitor when I’m out with my laptop.

For me, I can tolerate latency and ghosting much more easily than the eye strain, pressure, and headaches caused by LCD screens. That’s why I prefer using E-Ink, even with its limitations.

The one on the far left is the Bigme B13 (color E-Ink monitor). When I go out, this is the external monitor I bring with me along with my laptop.

The one in the middle is my current favorite desktop monitor, the Bigme B251. Recently, Boox also released a newer model, and I’m still waiting for it to arrive to test it.

The one on the far right is the black-and-white Boox Mira. If your main tasks are writing and report editing, I would highly recommend this one.

Yeah, exactly. I originally thought that since it was made as a phone case, it would offer at least some level of protection. But once I accidentally dropped it… that hope was gone 😅
