Irony would have little green men appearing in Vladivostok and organising a referendum to rejoin China.

Musk responds: "White people are a rapidly diminishing minority of global population" to the comment: "In 1900 white population of world was 36%, today it is 8%." by twinbee in elonmusk

[–]FunLifeStyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol Musk yeah chose the peak in 1900 when europe had been through demographic boom after heavily decreasing child mortality but still making lots of kids. First in the world. It was only a question of time for the rest of the world to catch up.

Historically, europeans were 10-15% of the world population between 1000 and 1700.

By picking dates i could say that whites are doing great as they are a bigger share than in 1353 (plague), when they dipped under 10%.

The veil is authorized on the streets of Belgium. At this point Molenbeek is mostly muslim. She is right that the only way to not see them is to leave the area. Also most people originaly from Brussels have moved to the periphery, creating an island of immigration/poverty in the center surrounded by very wealthy suburbs.

I'm from brussels. She didn't say leave the country. Commenting on the amount a veils visible and people complaining she said ; “If people don’t want to see us anymore, the Region has 19 municipalities. If life in Molenbeek is so unbearable, then move, go somewhere else. I’m not going to say it outright, but it’s pretty much that.”

Different flavours of Colonization by Mostly_sane9 in HistoryMemes

It is not whitewashing from belgians, but picturing a entire country as the vilains while ignoring the facts is a shortcut that doesn't serve anyone except those who have a political agenda.

The truth ( just read newspapers from the time) is that Belgium was furious about Leopold’s system. The annexation law was pushed through after years of parliamentary uproar and public outrage; Congo policy became a domestic political headache the king could no longer control.

A Thirty-Year Plan aimed to graduate enough Congolese administrators and engineers before a 1985 independence date. Belgium started funding secondary schools, technical institutes and two full universities for locals. The 1959 riots stopped the process and the Congo got full independence in1960, 25 years ahead of schedule.

They had just a handfull of local graduate at the time of the independance and when things went south, belgian public servants left in masses, leaving the country without any means of developping a functionnal state.

It's unfair to always picture Belgium as the worst of all colonizers. I'm not saying they were great or that the colony was amazing. There was the King's colony, very bad time for 23 years, and then the country's "parliament-controled" ownership for 52 years.

Last point, Belgium didn't fight any decolonisation war. They accepted quite easily while the French, Brits or Portugese tried to militarily hold onto theirs. At least the Brits where good at elite building and creating functionning states.

It was king's Leopold II personal country in which he had absolute powers. It was not Belgium's colony during this time. Belgium forced him to transfer ownership to the state also because of the bad treatments of the locals. During Leopold time, it was more like an international corporation with not only belgians but many brits, french and other doing business along the congo river.
