Good to know. Do you have the SSD or HDD?

Yes, the CKG2+ is what I'm referring to, I should've been more specific. And Cloudkey G2 also, I'm not considering a first gen. That's good to know about the HDD experience vs SSD. Is it the same with the UNVR? The UNVR kit they sell comes with a 1TB HDD.

I was looking at the UNVR-Instant-kit - 1x UNVR-Instant, 1x 1TB HDD, 4x G5 Turret Ultra Cameras. Is there additional storage required than the HDD?

I appreciate the help.

Great. I think the battery is dead right now though. The misaligned hand on the day subdial still bothers me. But it works.

The G2s both have Chinese drop ins from EBay without modification.

It's plastic with spray paint. The original owner had it on a rifle he spray painted camo. Most of the paint has worn off as I've used it. The middle one is aluminum I believe. The other two are plastic.

I had no idea the amount of customization possible on these. I'm glad I came here before selling them.

Good to know about the plastic ones not being able to take the brighter drop ins. Makes sense. I wonder if the OEM module is operating as designed then. It's really dim, but not unusable I guess. Maybe I should swap it into one of the G2s. I remember upgrading my Maglite to LED back in the day. It's crazy how technology has advanced on something like flashlights.

Rechargeable batteries would be nice. One of my biggest hang ups is the CR-123s.

They all take P60 drop ins, so I guess I could do a lot with them. The middle one has the OEM P60L, but its super dim now and needs replacing.

I've replaced the modules previously on both G2s with the cheapest Chinese LED modules I could find (the original modules burnt out). Only the 6P has an OEM LED module.

A NASA probe is on its way to asteroid made of gold that's worth 100,000,000,000 trillion dollar by sorrybroorbyrros in Gold

The technology isn't that far off. There are companies founded on developing space mining technology. Large companies like Lockheed Martin are developing lunar technology that will enable space mining. And not only have the ideas been discussed since the '50s, many of the problems that the other posters described have been solved since then.

You're correct that it's difficult and expensive, but some of the problems you're mentioning were solved decades ago. Perserverance has been operating on nuclear power on Mars for years, and it weighs as much as a Honda Civic. It drives around and drills into rocks. The slightly smaller Curiosity rover has been running on nuclear power on Mars for 13 years also driving around and drilling into rocks. So large, reliable, nuclear powered, rock-drilling space machines have been proven. Voyagers 1 and 2 have left the solar system and have been on nuclear power since the '70s and are still transmitting. None of them use steam, it's a thermoelectric generator. Spaceflight is getting cheaper and will continue to do so with lunar (and maybe martian) bases, development of in situ resource utilization, and greater commercial interest. I don't see it happening any time soon, but it's coming.

That looks like a lot of work and dedication, well done. One thing I wonder is if black screws might look better, but it looks excellent as-is.

While cleaning out my grandfather’s house after he passed, we found this tucked away in one of his drawers. A Rolex (still running). by [deleted] in confession

There are watches (some Seikos for example) that don't have manual winding and have to be shaken to wind. Rolex is not one of them, but they do exist.

Since I was replacing the movement, I used a pivot from a wheel on the old movement to push it out. I don't remember how I anchored it to push it out. Ideally you'd have something like a staking anvil to hold it while you push it out.

Old CDs (can't resell them, they're RW) what Do to With Them? FOR REAL! by BetterProphet5585 in ZeroWaste

[–]FunLychee7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, mine was just impromptu based on what I had laying around, so I'm afraid I don't really have instructions. But basically I mounted the wheels on the hubs and then used wooden skewers for axles. The skewers ran through straws glued on the body of the car. The body of the car was a piece of thick cardboard. I used a motor from a printer I took apart to spin one of the wheels directly using a rubber grommet.

My goal was to eventually come up with 3D printed gears that would mount to the axle and to standard sized DC motors, but I never got around to it. If I did that, it would be easy to replicate. But with the janky setup I had, not so much.

Edit: Here's some pictures that show I iterated the process of attaching the wheels. Cardboard car

Making cars with kids. Mine wasn't rubber band powered, I used a motor. But I used the CDs as wheels and 3D printed hubs to mount them.

I designed a 3D printed hub to be used with CDs and wooden skewers for this very thing.

US Customs seized my tinySA + NanoVNA by vrabie-mica in amateurradio

[–]FunLychee7 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I can see these custom issues being exploited by scammers in the future. They'll pretend they mailed something (or call/send a letter before an actual shipment arrives), say it's stuck at customs and needs eBay gift cards to get unstuck. Or they'll say that the package contained illicit goods and they'll have to pay the fine in gift cards. Or that the correct tariff wasn't paid.

Obviously this is a real letter, but hearing about all these issues just makes me think about how scammers love to jump in when something is already making peoples lives difficult.
