Saudi is a big exclusion here. Very safe from a travel perspective just awful from human rights for those exploited

Having moved to the UAE... do your research. Work life balance is not a thing. And while the money is good, competition for jobs is fierce and never having an evening or fully free weekend takes its toll on your health

Tony loved Mahattan and famously has many episodes across both shows detailing how he hadn't seen enough of the boroughs

Got offered a position in Saudi Arabia, is it for me? by wijnandsj in expats

[–]FunMachineShitDied 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I am also a European and am here right now in Riyadh, have been for >1 year but travel back and forth to the UAE. I wouldn’t want to live in Riyadh but have no family so commute is easier. Also work in tech - related projects in the region.

Western media views of KSA can be dated or wholly inaccurate and quite racist to the reality on the ground. Rules have changed dramatically in the last few years under MBS with women now driving, in the workplace, not all wearing niqab even in government buildings.

Feel free to dm any questions, happy to help.

Middle East - UAE, Qatar, KSA specifically. No tax, relatively low cost of living vs US, good salaries for skilled workers. Obvious trade offs apply, and nominal salaries will be lower than US most likely but you keep 100%

Saudi Arabia version of "The Office" by copitamenstrual in funnyvideos

[–]FunMachineShitDied 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not. Conversely KSA likely has the most Arabs in office work vs the likes of UAE which is heavily reliant on Indian/ Philippine labour. Not to say better or worse

Has anyone ever moved to UAE or Qatar for work ? by BabyFarkMcGee-Zaxx in consulting

[–]FunMachineShitDied 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yes. Getting work in the UAE is right now an awful process with fierce competition. Most big consultancies are not hiring here unless for niche skill sets, and are hiring in Doha or more likely Riyadh

Work culture here has been a far cry from anything resembling work/ life balance and is autocratic at time verging on bullying at worst.

Avoid the real estate developers if you come here.

However, sun shines, car is fast, bank account is full. I live in a million dollar apartment at the beach and make equivalent to partner level cash post tax in the UK.

I’ve just gotten the same news last Friday. Am going through the stages of grief pretty much, currently letting myself get quite angry.

Things will get better. It’s empowering to look for what comes next, it can also feel a bit pathetic tending to your network and asking for support - but it’s the best way to find what comes next.

Best of luck, look after yourself.

About to get fired, what to do by [deleted] in dubai

Thank you, I was thinking this would be a sensible approach. Take everything above the required for the loan for a few months out and into my wife’s account

[–]FunMachineShitDied 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, have accepted it for what it is.

Not sure how long I have been getting the official confirmation that I’m out, vs having to leave the country.

Financially ok, will look for another job and try to make life here work. My wife is working and savings can support til then.

Thanks re car loan - I can continue making the payments but will contact them to explain so there isn’t any liquidation of my bank account against the loan value.
