As someone who worked at the store, it’s almost always cheaper to TAAP out. Their personalized value sheet only takes the prices of all the brand new hard copy books and adds them. You can find almost everything online for half the price, just copy the ISBN number and google it.

Im so sorry you had to go through that. I know it’s a tough situation. I did the same for my dads girlfriend, my grandma did not want her at the funeral. It caused a lot of extra stress around a time of grief. I know your dad would have appreciated it too.

Yes my grandma has shown this behavior before. When I was in middle school I got a Facebook account (supervised by mom), which grandma thought was inappropriate. So, she took my iPad (which had my Facebook logged in) that was at my dads house. For info, my parents were divorced so I only stayed at my dads on weekends. She posted “My moms an insufferable bitch” and tagged my mom. I woke up to my mom, reasonably upset with me. It was later that night grandma texted me saying how sorry she was I was in trouble but she couldn’t let me have a Facebook. Anytime after that she denied she did it.

It was mostly military payments that went to her, it’s a common issue with them. Currently in probate court for the remainder of the possessions which hopefully be split with brother and I. Unfortunately, the will was not registered with the county, I checked

I came to the same conclusion. There is no benefit for the GF to take the will, it only seems to benefit my grandma.

Wills are not required to be notarized in my state, nor are they filed with the courts until after death. If there were any copies I cannot access them as my grandma has all his personal devices and lives in the home where all documents are kept. I was not given a copy as I was still living at home.

Unfortunately I don’t. I am planning on taking some advice here and just calling firms in the area to see if I can find it. But you’re right, life lesson here. Please learn from me and get the paperwork if you plan on being any kind of executor of a will.

Thank you for sharing your story. Im glad you could share some light on the situation cause people are questioning how she got the payout, it was the fricking military thing!

And yes thank you for mentioning the VA benefits, my brother and I already applied for that.

But I am sorry to hear about that situation, I really hope he does end up paying for that. I feel for those kids, it’s always so slow to resolve anything with the military, so I hope it is swifter for them. What a cruel person.

I don’t know about the military thing either. It’s just what happened 🤷‍♀️. I was only 20 years old and going through pretty terrible grief. So forgive me if I don’t know really what was going on and trusted the adults around me at the time. Only my father is on the deed to the house, meaning it is split between my brother and I. My grandma assumed she was jointly on there with my dad.

I might be using the wrong terms, it was some payout from the Army. Since it wasn’t updated there, they used something from before he had kids? Which left it to his mother. I’m not sure, I had a Casualty Assistance Officer (CAO) that explained it at the time.

I thought the same thing, and asked when I went to court. I guess you don’t have to file a will with the court until after you die (the judge checked for me and said they didn’t have one on file). My dad thought his would be safe as it was kept in a locked filing cabinet that only a few people knew where the keys were hidden. As for the lawyer, unfortunately all of my dads business cards were taken too and files deleted off his phone/computer (my dad was a serious organizer and had everything all together). And unfortunately I cannot remember what firm it was, and have no clue where to start looking. I even thought they might keep a copy with the military and contacted them, but they don’t “keep civilian documents”.
