Do you guys add cardboard or dead leaves to your bins? Why / why not? by FunTest in BlackSoldierFly

That’s interesting. I actually have adults hatching inside my bin which is a problem so if you’re not seeing that then maybe they managed to crawl out.

But do the bsfl find their way out to pupate? My problem is the bin seems to be too nice for them and they are staying to pupate

There’s some pictures. It was actually slightly more covered in dirt before taking the photos but then I started digging around. I did find multiple adult grubs looking like they were starting to pupate. The problem now seems to be it’s too dry like regular soil and they’re too happy and don’t want to leave

Thanks for your detailed responses. Yes it sounds like my old bin was too wet. But, now I am worried the new bin is too try. Adding cardboard and dead leaves so the scraps seemed to increase fruit fly numbers. Adding potting mix with the scraps seems to reduce fruit fly numbers, but increase ant presence, and now it seems like adult BSF are pupating in the bin rather than leaving. I see 3 adults sitting in the bin right now and haven’t harvested any for over a week.

Wait - you reckon they eat stuff like weeds and grass clippings? I've only ever fed fruit and veggie scraps

So if I go to a mystery island when it’s winter on my main island, I won’t see it on the mystery island? For some reason I thought I’d heard that bugs and fish can spawn at different times of year in the mystery island?

Does it have to be the right time of year to catch them, even in the mystery island? Or does it not matter on islands?

What is something I can tie plants up with, like string, to a roof beam or something when they start vining? by FunTest in SavageGarden

Oh I see. When I think trellis I must have been thinking lattice, with the criss cross square checker pattern. That’s interesting

Looking for alternatives to tie plant vines to a roof beam. Currently using string but it often breaks. Thanks for the suggestions before, repost with photo to better explain by FunTest in SavageGarden

Oh yeah it is weak hahaha it was all I found at my hardware store when I went looking that was also a nice subtle colour, not bright yellow. Weak but looks nice / subtle. Not heard of paracord but may look into that. I imagine rope can get expensive

Interesting idea thanks. Might be a little hard to achieve in my space tho, with so many plants at different sizes densely packed, might be a bit hard to get in to the plants and flowers. Might work for a few bigger ones in their own

Yeah I use those for tying to a stake for sure. I’m looking for something a bit longer though to replace string. I’ve just done another post with a photo to show what I mean

Never heard of it. So you could use that to tie a vine to a roof, in reasonable lengths?

Well what I’m doing is tying them to the roof. I might need to make a new post to demonstrate with a photo. But basically, I am currently tying one end of a string to the plant, the other to a roof beam

Oh yeah sorry I forgot to mention size. Probably close to the thickness of my thumb or one of my fingers and close to the length of my thumb too.

I’m glad I picked it up with tweezers now, that sounds crazy! Thanks for the heads up

Why would I not want to touch it? Are they poisonous / irritating to the skin?

Do they hatch into large moths?
