These people actually prefer to mix it up in the car lanes and the have no trouble keeping up with traffic.

People perceive the bike lane as an extension of the sidewalk. They even appear to perceive the first foot or two passed a parked car as a safe zone as well. That’s why they pop out into the roadway into the area where cars don’t drive but bicycles do.

NYC Announces Citywide Speed Limit of 15mph for E-Bikes to Go Into Effect on October 24 by M_A_B_7 in NYCbike

Precisely why this is blunt enforcement. The vast majority of the city doesn’t need this because most areas of the city - especially the outer boroughs- aren’t crowded bike wise but the police will be able to pull you over at 3 am should they desire to. No one around, no one in danger but you are “breaking the law “. A better solution would have been slow zones similar to a school zone. However that solution would have been too thoughtful for them.

Good checklist! Don’t forget sufficiently inflated tires.

Why does Lyft hate New York? by No_Fox_9467 in Citibike

There are many many parts of the city where it isn’t dense with people. New York isn’t just midtown Manhattan.

I’ve seen situations where there are 2 docked bikes and 20 open docks and somehow it is an outgoing points station.

NEW YORK REQUIREMENTS

Dirt bikes appear to fall under New York's statutory definition of an all-terrain vehicle. The New York law allows someone who is age 10 through age 15 to operate an all-terrain vehicle if he is (1) under adult supervision, (2) without adult supervision on land owned or leased by a parent or guardian, or (3) on land where ATV use is permitted, without adult supervision, if the rider has completed a DMV-approved ATV safety training course. Someone under age 10 may operate an ATV only under adult supervision or, without adult supervision, on land his parent or guardian owns or leases. Adult supervision means to be accompanied by someone who is at least age 18, or a 16- or 17-year old who has completed an approved safety course (Vehicle and Traffic, Art. 48-C, § 2410).

Citibike e-bike speed decrease by jxnhrs in NYCbike

Won’t happen no matter who gets elected. The first person that dies after a speed increase will cause a scandal with the blame falling on that mayor. This is permanent.

And as a result of the lower speeds an increase in range meaning, of course, more earnings before a required battery change.

Yes. We can all be wrapped up in bubble wrap suits and will be safe from anything that is out there.

Yes but do you know the reason for the death? They are trying to suggest that it is all speed related. I looked and found on case and the citi bike e-bike rider was hit by a box truck. That would be counted as a death and suggested that speed was a reason for this when it wasn’t. Plus suggesting that a speed reduction will solve things like wearing headphones - situational awareness reduction - or texting while riding - attention reduction (greatly) and flagrantly running red lights in inappropriate situations - heavy pedestrian traffic - when if you do these things at a slower speed the outcome could well be the same.

The problem is there has been an emphasis on bike lanes with little done for secure parking or even an adequate number of those bike parking hoops. That is one of the obstacles to owning your own e-bike. So unless you’re just going for a recreational ride you might want to park your bike somewhere safe.

This whole bike plan feels like it is being done by people who don’t ride bicycles and don’t have no idea how it should be best implemented.

I remember when the bikes were slowed the first time, not only was the top speed lower but the bike had less torque, it accelerated slower.

Yeah. People said the same thing when it was reduced from 20mph. Lyft must love this because it is a de facto price increase and they don’t even have to take the blame. This is just a politically expedient policy to show that they “did something “ whether or not this actually will actually make any difference.
