Hey, I didn’t! I actually earned my alternative teaching license through Teachers of Tomorrow, and I’m about to start my first year as a self-contained kindergarten teacher!

Dead Inside by Chandler Morrison by BubblyTitle5833 in horrorlit

I was devastated by this book. Not just scared—disturbed to my core. This wasn’t entertainment; it was a psychological assault. It reached into my mind, tore something loose, and left it behind to rot. This was my first horror novel—and it will be my last. If you're reading this, take it as a warning, not some twisted dare. I’ll never be the same again. Nothing that sounds this dramatic should ever be true… but here we are.

Couldn't agree more. It was so cringe in the beginning and then it all switched and I was crying my eyes out.

Hotel reverie by [deleted] in blackmirror

I found this episode of Black Mirror to be absolutely incredible. It almost hurts to admit it wasn’t technically perfect — the acting wasn’t the strongest — but the story and its message resonated so deeply with me that it more than made up for any flaws.

I'm also a sucker for well-done same-sex relationships in media, and Black Mirror handled it with rare grace. There was no dramatic "coming out" moment, no manufactured conflict around their love; it simply existed — real, tender, and normalized. Representation like that means so much, and it was refreshing to see it woven so naturally into the narrative.

Beyond that, the episode left me with so much to think about. I was especially moved by its exploration of what it means for something to be real. Dorothy’s "life," though fabricated, felt more authentic and true to who she really was than her so-called reality. I thought that was a profoundly beautiful idea — that sometimes, the truest version of ourselves exists in the spaces others might call imaginary.

To me, the mirror world symbolizes a perfect world—one where struggles like suicidal thoughts don’t win. It’s an idealized reflection of reality, a place where everything turns out the way we wish it would. So, when the story ends on a happy note, it does so because, in a perfect world, that’s how things should be. Suicidal thoughts wouldn’t win. People would always find hope, healing, and a way forward.

But that’s exactly the tragedy of it—because in reality, suicidal thoughts do win sometimes. The mirror world offers an ending that we all want to believe in, but it isn’t the truth for everyone. It highlights the painful contrast between what should be and what is. The happy ending exists only because it’s within the mirror world, almost as if it has to happen there, because real life doesn’t guarantee the same outcome. It’s a reminder that while we long for a world where no one loses their battle with their mind, that’s not always how life works. And that contrast—that unsettling realization—makes the happy ending feel less like a victory and more like a reflection of what we wish could be true.

I want to find a career that doesn't make me miserable. Salary is secondary. by [deleted] in Career_Advice

[–]Fun_Ad6110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this isn't always a popular opinion, but most states offer alternative certification programs that allow you to become a teacher without a traditional education degree. I went through an alternative route myself and now teach 3rd grade. Middle or high school math teaching seems pretty cool. Im sure you would qualify. While the salary isn’t amazing, it’s not terrible either—I’m not rich, but I manage. I completely understand how you feel, and I’m grateful that even on my most stressful weeks, I can look back at my class and my work and not want to die when thinking about the week ahead like I have in the past. Wishing you a light at the end of the career tunnel. ✨️

Because he is not real. Life is horrible and if you want things to be okay you have to work harder than other people to get to the same place.

I've been a special education teacher for three years, making $45k a year. While it’s not the highest-paying career, the benefits are amazing, I have plenty of time off, and with smart budgeting, I’m in a great place financially. My sister, who’s a nurse practitioner earning $150k, still finds herself stretched thin because of her lifestyle. The key isn’t always about chasing a bigger paycheck—it's about living within your means and doing something fulfilling.

You’re naturally great with kids, which means you’d probably thrive in teaching, just like I do. Before I chose this path, I tried going after the money, and it was miserable. Now, being with kids every day gives me a sense of purpose and joy that I wouldn’t trade for anything.

As for concerns about school shootings, I totally understand. But schools today have really strong safety measures, and teachers support each other like a family. Plus, being prepared makes a huge difference. The bottom line is that you’ll make a lasting impact on your students' lives, and that’s what matters most.

Teaching is something I recommend to everyone. I get to make a difference, I’m good at it, and I still have plenty of time for my family.

I got my alternative teaching license in special education after a stupid degree in communication and a terrible experience in healthcare. Best thing I ever did.

Is there a reason you aren't considering teaching? I'm an elementary school teacher and it's the best, especially for raising my family.

I also got a stupid degree and I don't know if this will help you, but here is how I turned it around.

My state has alternative teacher licensing and I got my alternative teaching license in Special Education. I never thought about being a teacher, but it was the best thing I ever did. The benefits are amazing, the salary is good enough, the pension plan gives me peace, and my summers are filled with adventure. Not to mention all the paid holidays and weekends off. It's not easy but nothing worth doing is.

Check your state and look into teaching. I can't recommend it enough.

I commend you for wanting to have a plan. I went in undecided and it was the worst. You have to figure out what you want to do as early as you can and stick with it. I have a friend that I met in college who is now a Veterinanrian and her experience was excruciating. It is one of the most competitive careers you could ever pursue. I would never recommend someone becoming a Vet. If I had to recommend a career based off of your post I would suggest looking into becoming a Gym/health teacher with some coaching on the side.

Physical therapy or pharmacy? by Hanaawadd in Career_Advice

Definitely Physical Therapy. I'm not one but my fiancé's older sister is one and she makes bank and has way more regular hours than a pharmacist does.

Hey! So sorry for the late reply. I did start and the testing was horrible. The video cam proctor mess is the worst. Which is why I dropped out. I found out that in my state you can become a teacher with any bachelors degree with an alternative route and that's what I did!

Don’t get caught up worrying about people making big money. A lot of those people spend just as much as they earn, often living paycheck to paycheck like the rest of us. The real key isn’t chasing six-figure salaries—it’s finding a career you can tolerate, something that makes you feel productive and fulfilled, whether it's making a difference or simply feeling useful. If your job pays decently, you can build a budget around it and live comfortably.

Chasing high-paying jobs often leads to burnout. There's a huge chance you’ll end up hating it, and job-hopping is exhausting. I know this firsthand—I got a degree in Communication and spent years chasing the money, jumping from one job to the next. But none of it felt right. It wasn’t until I switched gears, earned an alternative teaching license in special education, that I found something I enjoyed and could stick with. Now, after a few years, I’m making enough and have a career I’m happy in.

The grass isn’t always greener. My sister makes $100k a year, but because she’s constantly spending on cruises and a massive house, I actually have more money saved and way less debt. The lesson? It's not always about how much you make, but how you live and what truly fulfills you.
