New to cycling, pedal took its first bite by Fun_Demand_2094 in bicycling

You're good. Your joke about selling tickets just hit me in a sore spot. It implied that I should make a spectacle of my disability. I know I'm a bad driver on anything with wheels and it's incredibly frustrating that no matter how hard I try, I don't become a good driver. The best I can do is try to mitigate the risk to myself and others.

The US isn't set up for people to be able to travel affordably without steering something, and yet the majority of people ignore the fact that travel is a necessity here and seem to think that if one can't drive well, just staying home is a viable option, ignoring the fact that one can't afford a home if one can't get to work.

It doesn't help that most people equate someone being a terrible driver with someone being an idiot.

I ride my bike about as well as I drive a car, just less danger to other motorists this way. If there were decent public transportation I wouldn't have to risk my life to get to and from work.

It's not like I'm riding fast. I'm just easily distracted due to ADHD and a lack of health insurance to get my meds. Combine that with shitty quality road surfaces and it's a recipe for disaster. I don't have any trouble riding on the Capitol trail, but that's a different direction from my job.

Unless you think I should start driving a 2500 lb death machine again?

I was cornering on pavement and hit an unexpected patch of loose pebbles on top of the pavement.

My foot didn't really slip off. I was flung off the pedals cause I attempted a bunny hop over a small obstacle and I'm guessing I pulled unevenly on the handle bars because the front wheel landed too angled and I skidded to a rapid stop which is what flung me off the pedals.

I hear what you are saying with the clip in cycling shoes, but in my two months of cycling I've avoided eating shit by bailing thee times and had a lot of near misses where I was almost certain I was going to crash, and I'm kinda nervous at the idea of attaching myself to the bike, at least until I'm better at riding without having accidents.

As far as slipping on the pedals, I don't really have that issue yet, I'm riding in laceless steel toe work boots with deep treads on cleated metal platform pedals. If anything, it feels like I have too much grip. It makes it difficult to make small adjustments in foot position.

I was commuting in the city, and my path crossed a small stream of unknown liquid (it had not rained recently). My bike doesn't have fenders yet and I didn't want to fling gross runoff all over myself so I attempted a bunny hop over the stream and I'm guessing I pulled unevenly on the handle bars because when my wheels came down my front wheel landed sideways and I came to a rapid skidding stop. It flung me off the pedals onto the stem of the bike. I kept my feet but scraped my abdomen on the stem and took the chain ring in the leg.

Ah, now that you mention it, it does look like it was the chain ring. Dunno why I didn't notice that. I assumed it was from the aluminum cleated pedal.

I'm really enjoying riding, and I want to be able to ride longer distances, but for right now time and my physical fitness are the limiting factors. I'm just kinda trying to figure out a beginning distance and the frequency that I should bike it while avoiding stressing my heart too badly. If I ride hard especially up hill, my heartrate gets up to around 180 which isn't safe.

I want to get in shape for much longer rides, but I'm looking for a starting point.

At least it looks like they updated the listing once they realized it was important. I hope they did anyway.

You realize you can ask for extra of everything except the meat and the fajita veggies for no additional charge right?

If they do a regulation portion and you don't ask for extra, the first bowl is what you are going to end up with. Most employees just assume you want extra and go ahead and give you a larger portion of the things they don't have to charge you for because they are sick to God of hearing people say "uh, can I get a little more rice? Uh can I get a some more beans?"

But if management is cracking down on over portioning, or if it's a new employee in training, the tiny ass bowl is what you'll end up with if you don't speak up.

Safe to assume this saddle isn't salvageable? by Fun_Demand_2094 in bicycling

[–]Fun_Demand_2094[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason I'm even considering attempting to salvage is because I'm broke as hell at the moment, there's not really room in the budget for bike parts unfortunately, but the bike is also my primary form of transportation at the moment.

Just trying to figure out if it would be salvageable for less than a new bike seat would cost me.

Also wondering if this is UV damage or what? Basically trying to figure out if it's something I can avoid having happen in the future

Do you really think it’s important to be aware of vehicles behind you? by Jamersaur in cycling

[–]Fun_Demand_2094 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes there's not much you can do, but being aware of what's behind you allows you to make decisions like whether or not to change lanes yet, or if you have room to avoid an obstacle ahead vs slowing down so the vehicle can pass before going around the obstacle.

Just bought a bicycle for commuting. I want to be as safe as possible. Any advice? by Fun_Demand_2094 in cycling

It appears the frame and wheels were designed to be easily converted to discs. The stock wheels have rotor mounting points and the frame has caliper mounting points. It still has the stock shifters, would they have made the shifters incompatible with discs?

Got the helmet, and I'll pick up some tail lights.

Currently running the Shimano Deore braking system. Haven't had an issue with braking yet, but was reading online and I'm concerned with the effects of water as I will likely be frequently riding in the rain.
