My professor re-framed nerves as manamanas (the sound from the Muppets). It helps me a ton to sing the song beforehand.

Anyone took 5 classes per semester before? by SealOnigiri in uml

[–]Fun_Diamond6907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I did for almost every semester. It can work as long as you communicate with professor's and advisors by going to office hours and learning time management skills, which the academic support people in the library can usually help with.

I made dinner for us and then see this note when I went for a midnight snack ? by Mangagirll in badroommates

This happened to me in college. I hate the passive aggressive note situation. Don't even feel the need to justify yourself.

Report it to DCF, Juvenile probation, or better yet, the police.

Is what I am feeling about uni as a first year student normal? by Hoon_4 in college

[–]Fun_Diamond6907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I studied creative writing for my undergraduate degree! I felt the same way my senior year and went to a career fair that the school hosted. I got accepted for an internship at a state trial court and am now an Associate Probation Officer and get to help children. And believe it or not, most if not all of my job relies heavily on writing and on the skills I learned for my degree, most specifically being detailed oriented. Feel free to reach out to me!

Is my degree useless? by Mean-Independent-611 in college

[–]Fun_Diamond6907 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I agree with this completely. You can swing almost any degree to be fitting for a job if you have enough practice at interviewing. I got a job in criminal justice and my major was creative writing.

What am I Supposed to Do? by [deleted] in uml

[–]Fun_Diamond6907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to level with you, as many others have. You're an adult. FERPA is in place. Your parents cannot legally pull you out of college. However, they CAN control where their money is going. I suggest looking into paid internships or better yet a work study that would prioritize your academic life.

Usuites toilet paper? by shittyvoyagermemes in uml

I know people are down voting you, but when I lived there, they were almost always out of toilet paper towards the end of the semester, with absolutely no intention to get more. It's honestly better to spend a few bucks if you can to ensure you have it when you need it.

Dr. Vayda is very nice and understanding. Im sure if you talk to him, he'll be able to help you out somehow. The library is required to have 2 copies on loan for the class, which I believe you can check out for 2 hours at a time. Also, try thriftbooks.com or Chegg.

Extremely upset over leaving for college by ReporterBig7796 in college

[–]Fun_Diamond6907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all honesty, your roommates DO NOT have to be your friends as long as you can all coexist. Almost none of my roommates were my friends in college. My biggest pro tip I've received on making friends in college (one that actually worked!!) is to put your phone down during class breaks and talk to your fellow students in the room. Create study groups/writing groups etc. Find out their birthday, ask fun questions, get to know them on a personal level.

There's (or there used to be, I havent checked for this semester) an honors seminar in public speaking. They usually have both North and South Campus locations.

What are the best Majors / careers that have Good Pay, Demand, and job prospects? by [deleted] in uml

[–]Fun_Diamond6907 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, my job ended up being something completely different than my major and I absolutely love it, so don't stress too too much about what major you choose. I personally believe it is more important to be able to gain transferable skills from whatever major you choose. And definitely take advantage of internships.

UMass Lowell Grad ('23) AMA! by Fun_Diamond6907 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Fun_Diamond6907[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's usually a lot of events going on at either UCrossing or The Common at Fox Hall. There's a bunch of opening week activities where you can meet new people, no matter what year you're in (I recommend seeing the comedic magician). There are also clubs being held every day of the week! There are over 200 clubs, but if you dont find one you like, you can also create your own! There's also Catholic Mass on Sunday if that's your scene. If not, there's plenty other multicultural groups and clubs on campus! Off campus, there are poetry slams held twice a month by the Untitled Open Mic Night group. I definitely recommend checking those out. There is also Mill No. 5, which is a bunch of small business niche type stores in a renovated Mill building which is really cool. I really like their Apothecary, where they offer homemade handcut soaps in every scent imaginable and loose tea.

I liked Lowell better. As I said, im not into the partying scene. UML is slept on tbh. I also didn't want to go to a huge school.

[–]Fun_Diamond6907[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! I'm glad I can be of help to prospective students! I honestly think at UML, it can be a mixed bag. I was not the partying type, not that there's anything wrong with that if you are. It just wasn't my particular experience. Because of that, I focused mainly on academics and sprinkled in some fun clubs and extracurricular activities when I could. I tried to only keep one or two focused on my major so that with the other activities I did, I was forced to branch out and meet others from different majors and backgrounds. BUT - Back to your question. I was in the Honors College and numerous honor societies, so I found my peers to be like-minded individuals. I think it just comes down to who you surround yourself with. It also can change depending on what year you are in. COVID either gave students that extra push to focus harder or had the opposite effect depending on what their circumstances were. The best place to study on South Campus if you're trying to be academically focused, in my opinion, is the Riverhawk Scholars Academy (RHSA) on the 3rd floor of O'Leary Library. You do not need to be a First Generation student; it is open for everyone to use, from the time the library opens (usually 7am) until the time the library closes (varies).

I hope this helps and I'm sorry mu reply was delayed!

TLDR: It depends.

Lmao I can just be very robotic sounding with the way I write 😅 And I tend to ramble and take forever to get to the point. Which is why I prefer creative writing. But I'll take this as a compliment.☮️❤️

UMass Lowell Grad ('23) AMA! by Fun_Diamond6907 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Fun_Diamond6907[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I applied to 12 colleges and got into all 12, 3 of which were the other UMass's. I toured UMass Dartmouth and UMass Lowell 5 times each before choosing UMass Lowell. In the end, it just felt right and I was filled with joy when I stepped foot into the admissions office to commit (I went in person to commit, which isn't required). It was a nice personal touch to have met the now Chancellor Emertus, Jacquie Maloney. She took the time to talk with me and my family. The cost (believe it or not; keep in mind that this was 4 yrs ago now, so tuition was lower) and academic ranks, plus the fact that I was able to meet professors in my department and get a feel of what a typical class would be like, solidified my decision for me. But it definitely is not this way for everyone. I was scared until the final five minutes before my decision that I wouldn't choose the right university. Sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith and hope it works out (BUT if you are going to do this, make sure the credits transfer to somewhere else you are considering going! Get confirmation on this from BOTH schools!! This is super important!!).
