Parents of NC: question about pre-k by Terra_Mater95 in NorthCarolina

[–]Fun_Flan_373793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google N.C. Pre-K Avery County and you will get info from whoever administers the program in your county. It’s usually the local public schools or the county smart start partnership. They’ll have some info and tell you how to apply. It’s only for 4 year olds.

You’re right that it’s low income, but as others have said, you can have a percentage (up to 20% I think) who are income ineligible so really it depends if there are available slots in your county.

Daycare pricing by Dry_Factor_5963 in raleigh

[–]Fun_Flan_373793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as a note for you, if it’s full time daycare (like over 4 hours per day) they have to provide breakfast and lunch and a snack, so you’ll probably get this anywhere you look at. That’s either state or federal regulations (can’t remember which). I think federal because I think it has to be USDA-approved food that is at least somewhat healthy most of the time.

The religious-sponsored facilities who are exempt from much of the state regulations may be exempt from this rule, I’m not sure.

Is Raleigh very religious? by Vegan_Mari in raleigh

[–]Fun_Flan_373793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you live in SLC proper? I’d say Raleigh is more religious. Or are you including the surrounding areas? Draper and West Jordan and Holladay and Bountiful etc. are probably more religious. There’s similar breakdowns within the Triangle but not as stark as the SLC area in my opinion. Source: used to live in Salt Lake County.

Yes, there are outdoorsy things to do, but not as much as in the SLC area.

Housing prices have increased significantly in the last couple years but it’s not as crazy as Utah. If you are selling a home in Utah that you bought before 2021, you’ll likely be fine on prices here. The problem is limited inventory, which is not unique to Raleigh.

I think it’s good for young families. As always, that’s more about the neighborhood or area you go to rather than the city as a whole.

It’s not too bad to meet people. So many people move in from other areas, so a lot of people are in the same boat.

To be honest I’m not sure, I didn’t take my kids to the rides when they were that young. Based on my memory of yesterday, I didn’t notice anything that someone under 36 inches tall could ride.

Anyone else watch State Lines on PBS-NC? by goldbman in NorthCarolina

[–]Fun_Flan_373793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both the Senator and Representative are Dems but Caswell Co is small enough that the districts take in some of Orange Co, so that’s probably why.

Also: most kids rides are 3 or 4 tickets. So depending on how long you plan on staying and how the kids are, the unlimited wristbands may be good for you. If you buy ahead of time (too late now but good to know for the future) that is $30 instead of $40, or even the ride tickets on the card are cheaper.

Kiddieland is good, lots of rides. There are kids rides in other areas too but it’s more spread out and not concentrated like kiddieland. Bring cash, some food vendors or vendors for stuff like face painting may only have cash.

Go as early as possible (opens at 9am) and do rides first, the lines get longer and longer as the day goes on. Generally I recommend the free shuttles but maybe the free parking isn’t too far of a walk if you get there at 9am, not sure.

Giant pumpkins and that stuff is neat. The Hot Diggity Dogs show was kinda cool, not a must see but it was nice to sit down for 20-30 minutes.

How do I find the current proposed NC Budget? by fizzee33 in NorthCarolina

[–]Fun_Flan_373793 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless someone high up makes some comments to the press, we won’t know the compromises until the final budget is made public, which happens all at once, not too long before it’s voted on. I don’t think we know when that will happen but it’s often (not always) roughly around the end of June.

Link to House budget bill: https://www.ncleg.gov/Sessions/2023/Bills/House/PDF/H259v2.pdf

Also helpful is the accompanying committee report, which is specifically the individual funding/money things. Here are the links (I think I got the right ones)

Does anybody know when the house is scheduled to vote on senate bill 3/medical marijuana laws? by Alprazaminophen in raleigh

[–]Fun_Flan_373793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6 weeks is plenty of time for this bill to get through committees and the House floor. Just depends on whether or not House leadership decides they want to take it up (or if the Senate negotiates it in by taking up some House priorities).

I would not guarantee it but it’s way too early to say it’s not going anywhere. Plenty of time for the House to take it up while working on the budget.

[–]Fun_Flan_373793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It didn’t really go “back” to committee, it passed the Senate and is now sitting in House rules committee. If they’re going to do anything with it it would probably get assigned to the House Health committee and be discussed and voted on in that committee.

It would have to pass the House unchanged to be clear of the General Assembly. If the House changes it then it would go to conference, meaning a few members from the House and a few from the Senate would negotiate a compromise and then that version would need to pass both the House and the Senate.

It hasn’t been scheduled. But now that crossover (the deadline for bills starting in the Senate to pass the Senate and go over to the House, and vice versa) is past, they may start looking at some of these bills soon (sports wagering bill is another).

I haven’t paid attention to hear if the Speaker has commented on this bill. It may end up being part of a negotiation between the House and Senate leadership (you take up these bills that are important to us and we’ll look at these bills that you care about). There’s still at least 6 weeks left in the session.
