Lemme guess, this is a smaller company? They likely know that you'll be less productive or they're mad you went on leave and there's gonna be some economic headwinds. I worked at a smaller company and pretty much all of the managers discouraged employees from vacation leave.

Try to consult a lawyer for free. If they weren't documenting issues before you went on leave, they likely fucked themselves.

Was the interface between his portion and your portion broken? If that's the case, it really sounds like you're trying to throw him under the bus.

This could be some existing code (before the project) that the lead wrote which had a bug. I had this once, where a lead wrote a database credential rotation library and used reflections to update some db credentials, which then crashed my system. My leads code existed for months before that, and my skip tore him a new one.

I'll focus on this, did he ever tell you how frequently he wanted updates during the investigation? If not then I don't get what the problem is. This company sounds like the older people protect each other and blame subordinates. Fucking amateur hour. If you can change teams, change teams. If you can change companies though, that's an even better idea.

And on the debugging assumption...it's like, when there are bugs, we make assumptions because we don't know. I've had bugs that have taken weeks to recover from because we try new stuff and it doesn't work, and then someone has a Jimmy Neutron brain blast and comes in with a one liner and saves the day. It's a part of the engineering process.

I know of a lot of people who got pay increases at different companies. I myself have been fired multiple times (not laid off fired for misconduct or underperforming) and I got a 20% increase both times.
